Psystar pushes its luck, launches new Open (3) Mac clone desktop
Other Mac-cloners may know their time is limited, but good 'ol Psystar just keeps on forging straight ahead -- despite being locked in a nasty legal battle with Apple that could result in it getting shut down any second now. Ignoring that (sophisticated looking) elephant in the corner for a moment, the company has released its latest model, called the Open(3). It sports your choice of processors ranging from a 2.8GHz Core2Duo E7400 up to a 2.53GHz Core2Quad Q8200, up to 4GB of memory, 1TB of storage, a 6x Blu-ray burner, and graphics from an NVIDIA GeForce 9500GT, all packaged in a slim case that, while not quite up to Cupertino standards, certainly looks a fair bit more visually appealing than its previous black boxes. Prices start at just $599, but tick all those option buttons and you'll be looking at something closer to $2,000 -- a lot, but close to $1,000 less than a comparably spec'd Mac Pro. Get 'em while you can.

I guess what I'm confused at is why you guys care what apple prices it's stuff at. You guys sound so angry but you all sound like your on a linux or win box, or some other cellphone brand. It's not affecting your bank account etc. You looked at what was important to you and bought what fit that scale. Do you guys get angry at people for buying overpriced audi's, bmw's, or lexus's?
So why the anger?
Because they all know, although can't admit, that Apple leads in many areas. Makes them crazy with hate, to the point that they can not see facts or be rational.
Apple is a true pioneer in the tech / gadget world, everyone knows this - and it is not 'propaganda'
Propaganda is the dissemination of information aimed at influencing the opinions or behaviors of large numbers of people. As opposed to impartially providing information, propaganda in its most basic sense presents information in order to influence its audience.
Advertising is by definition propaganda
Like "Apple is a true pioneer in the tech / gadget world, everyone knows this - and it is not 'propaganda'"
So what did they invent and pioneer again ? apart from creating a bunch of zombies who sit around feeling superior to other computer users because they paid more for a PC with a shorter warranty (also not onsite)
seriously. i don't understand the irrational apple hate here. it's like people are PERSONALLY offended that someone doesn't want to tool around newegg or something picking up parts to build their own desktop.
OS X 10.5, 2.8 C2D, 2GB, 500GB, 8400GS, $599 - That's really not a bad price at all for an upgradable system that's guaranteed to run OS X.
I've seen a lot of stuff on here about how there were examples of stuff before apple released a product in the market. Where i think they really pioneer is in the complete hardware/software product. I had creatives and rio's before the ipod came out-they were junk that had very basic gui on them and badly placed buttons. The ipod for example was a wonderful package back then to use.
Industrial design matters, software interface design matters. You guys talk about advertising as if it's the only thing that apple has going for it but there is a real emotional connection to their products that form for users. Just go to the apple store sometime, then compare it to best buy. That connection is as strong as the one the guys who build the pc's themselves have or the guys who are loving their linux distro. You might not understand it, you might attempt to belittle it, but it is strong and powerful. Just because it's not part of your value scale does not mean it's not on others.
I still do not understand the anger though. Do you feel slighted by "a bunch of zombies who sit around feeling superior to other computer users"? If so i think people should worry less about what other people think.
the ipod saved apple...
Yes, thanks for your very insightful comment and staying so much on topic!
It was the Apples use of Firewire that made the iPod useable. USB1.0 was way to slow. Buy the time Apple dropped FW to go with USB2.0 they were in a strong spot.
Before the first iPod I was using a very old MP3 flash phone ( in 2001 )
Siemens SL45 was the first mobile phone with memory expansion and an MP3 player, which debuted in 2001.
After that slow USB1.0 experience - in 2002 I purchased a second generation iPod 10GB - having a MAC with fire wire and iTunes it was the only way to go.
not bad...
.
Actually what apple is doing is considered illegal in most of EU.
It's called a double sale. In example: you want product A, but to get it, you must also purchase product B,
despite the fact that product A works fine without B.
Apple hardware and software are definitely 2 distinct products. I've got high hopes for psystar to pull this through.
I have no need for OSX, but those who do wan't to have a choice not to buy the hardware with it, which is usually overpriced
to the point of being ridiculous. Apple is ferociously guarding it's operating system, they don't want companies like Dell
to install it on their laptops. No wonder why Dell is funding psystar to get through the trials.
With that logic, I wouldnt want the lucky charms, but i do want the wacky wall walker. General Mills is illegal for including the wacky wall walker w/ lucky charms
Of course they don't. The main reason OS X is great is cause it only is made for a certain set of hardware.
Plus, the hardware isn't "overpriced to the point of being ridiculous" just go do some research.
Anyway, if you think the hardware is overpriced (even though it really isn't) why would you want it without OS X?
Joseph it is logical... if you wanted to buy a wacky wall walker and the only way to get one is to buy lucky charms, then yes it should be illegal. Just because you're used to the way we do business here in the U.S., it doesn't mean that we have all the right answers. Laws and rules can be created and changed, nothing is written in stone.
About the Open(3):
What are the risks of buying this product? I would love to upgrade from my Mac Mini 2GHz. Would I be left holding the bag with un-updatable OS if the legal action by Apple is successful?
Is it better to like an organization who is parasitic in nature? You guys cant see the forest through the trees.
Psystar:
How to avoid the *wrath of Jobs et al*:
1) Announce that you have found an alternative solution that allows you to decrease costs while increasing security, users freedom to use their purchased machine as they want, and users access to legal free software.
2) Stop installing OSX and install Ubuntu
*Job* done.
What made the ipod ideal was itunes. No other company standardized the software with the hardware. Apple has always been good at simplifying software.
