Rogers begins selling white Nokia E71, Americans consider relocating
You Yanks may bang on the Canucks for having to deal with those ridiculous three-year contracts, but every so often, something goes down in the Canadian mobile space that flat-out silences everyone beneath the border. Take this, for instance -- Nokia's white E71, which can only be scored over in Europe and now in Canada with support for native 3G bands, is finally on sale at Rogers Wireless. Oh sure, the only difference between this E71 and the black E71 is the colors involved, but we all know just how important that becomes when exclusivity is mixed in. The pain? $99.99 on a lifetime, er, three-year contract. Sorry, we had too.

I still think the gray E71 is the sexiest of them all :I
I'm with you on that one. The gray steel version is gorgeous.
Oooh, yay, Rogers Wireless.
Let's all pay $60/month for 1GB of mobile internet usage!
Too bad your not one of the lucky ones still riding high on their 6GB/$30 from last summer.
1 gb is 30$... and their 45$ voice and data has 200 anytime min, free eve and weekends, unlimited txts and mms, and 500mb of data.. considering the phone has wifi and so do most places people go.. you wont be using much data at all really... unless you are downloading torrents while driving or somthin... its finally cheap in Canada! oh.. and they are cool with tethering as well... and warn you by txt when you are at 80% and 100% of your data plan
@Jason: you make some great points.
before the iphone mess last year rogers had brutal data options. now we cant complain... with that $45 you even get choice of bonus feature. one of them being canada-wide MY5 calling/messaging. great package for $45
Unfortunately, not one of the lucky ones.. I was only 2 months into a plan then.
Then when they introduced a three month upgrade to the iPhone I was already moving on to something better.
@Jason.. It's not cheap in Canada, I used to pay for that plan, after taxes, system access fees and all the other bullsh*t charges Rogers LOVES to give you it was was never that cheap. Now I'm on Virgin Mobile and I pay $75 all in (taxes, everything) for a decent voice plan and unlimited data.
@Kate F.
maybe your confused.. i'm on the $45 plan. i get 500meg data thats usually a $25 option. have MY5 canada wide thats normally $15 addon. 200 daytime, UL eve/weekends.. dont see how you can go wrong? addon 6.95saf (yes, BS), tax and all in my monthly is under $60
you getting all those options? also.. theres still a problem with your plan. your stuck with virgin mobile. give me a break.. at least you should have gone to fido and grabbed a nice unlocked gsm phone.
White phone for The Great White North.
its a sunny day in montreal, hoser!
not in a million years
You just like the Grey one because you can't have the white one lol. Jealous much? ;) Just kidding.
You would think Engadget would do their research correctly, it is not a three year contract, it is a three year contract and first born son. Geez!!
Oh and BTW, we pay $30/month for 6GB not $60/month for 1BG as posted above.
Still sticking with my iPhone, even though I'm a Windows FanBoy.
Actually it is 1GB for $60. The 6GB for $30 was a promotion that was only available until September of 2008.
$60 for 1GB is voice + data. You can tack on a 1GB data plan to your existing voice plan for $30/month:

Not justifying their rates (scroll down further for their ridiculous "flex plan") - just clarifying the issue.
@Sneaks. actually its $30 for 1gig. theres other options too, but no $60 for 1gig
wait, Canada actually exists? All this time...
Something to think aboot, no? (Sry Canucks, couldnt resist...)
Meanwhile in Blighty, I'm enjoying my E71 for just £22/month, 18-month contract. :)
Actually the best looking E71 is the all black version.
I lived up there in the Great White north for 4 1/2 years. Loved it! There's a lot to recommend it. But when I remember having four feet of snow in my front yard in April in Edmonton, I quickly reconsider and will stay here in sunny Southern California.
This phone is awful. I'm on my second now, still serious voice issues. The bass in your voice make the speaker sound like a kazoo when you are talking. Nokia has gone WAY down hill, I will no longer be buying Nokia after getting burned with a 9300, n75 and now the e71.
Hate to say this, but three in a row is an overkill... and it kind of makes you wonder if the issue is with the owner, rather than with the phones...
Is Canada no longer part of North America?
Yes, Canada is the largest part of NA.
we don't like to talk about it though
IOREK RETURNS!!!!!
Returns from where?
Not impressed. I love E71 (and, yes, I think the gray steel totally kicks butt), but the very idea of a three-year contract and bastardized UI and functionality is a deal-breaker for me. That's why unlocked is the way to go! In fact buying unlocked will work out to be a cheaper option (especially, over three years). But, still, good to know that Rogers is actually offering this super awesome phone!
I'm kind of shocked at what they're asking for the white model. The grey E71 is $49.99 on a contract, or it was a week and a half ago when I was looking at it in-store. Kind of demonstrates the way Rogers sticks it to their customers. I wound up buying an unlocked one from Omegacell instead. They had the white and grey models for the same price, but I picked grey because I think it looks nicer. Great phone, though, I'm very happy with it so far.
Shit, nevermind. It looks like they just bumped the price. What a bunch of assholes.
You think Roger's contract periods are bad? You should see how they lock-out and manipulate features on all the phones they sell.
yes even comparison.$99. ok after engadgeters voted iphone 3g for smartphone of the year. Would u get iphone 3g or a nokia.,??seriously...there is a reason this phone not making it to the states on subsidies, no one has faith on nokia devices anymore..and to think my first phone was a nokia in 1995..
Judging by your writing style, you weren't even born in 1995.
End the Sony Ericsson joined venture,

if only this phone didnt crap out (slow down to an unusable speed) when you add two or more imap accounts in the default mail app...
Hmmm, I live in SC and am using a White E71 at this instant for this comment. (Using Skyfire browser)
True, I had to buy it unlocked but it was under $300 and no contract.
And why is it that its $99.99 on a 3-year contract? Because Rogers is the ONLY GSM provider in Canada, also why the iPhone is insanely expensive in Canada. Either Canada gets another GSM provider to give some competition for Rogers, or Nokia and Apple make a CDMA version; which is not going to happen.
Bottom line: will someone PLEASE start another GSM provider in Canada?! PLEASE??!?!?!
Ill get right on that.
Yeah, we're dying to move to Canada.....Seriously......
You can tell by the thousands of comments that this is a hot item. Oh wait.
Sure because comments in a US centric blog are relevant to the sales of a primarily European and Asian based manufacturer.
Wow, got me there. I'd never heard of Nokia until this post.
The white E71 is available in the US, not sure where Engadget confirmed their information. But you can get it at the Nokia Flagship stores and other retailers. I did.
People, we need to start a revolution! FUCK THE CONTRACTS!!!
Here's how it should work: 6 month contract MAX, with the cost of the phone subsidized over those 6 months. Or even go a year if you wish, and if you terminate early you are liable ONLY for the remaining cost of the phone.
I'm tired of getting ripped off by these companies! I know you are too! Only WE can change it!
DEMAND CHANGE!!!!
Coool Down Barack!
Competition is the only reasonable way that we Canadians can tackle the Rogers/Fido problem....
Hopefully things will change in a year or two when those two new start-ups actually start-up!
You should be focusing on the fact that you live in Canada. I am and I feel very sorry for you and your horses. My condolences.
You know you can actually buy these unlocked online & in real life. No contracts or relocation required.
I dunno wtf it is with this mentality that you need to wait before some huge telco 'releases' the phone with contract before you can buy it...
I just talked to my local (san francisco) AT&T dealer and he promised they are getting the E71 beginning of next month. Sure Canada is great but why deal with all that cold?
A few of the ATT store clerks also were sporting the E71 as well.
Why would anyone get that excited over this phone? puh-leeze
lol in Australia, we get that free on a 2 year contract for $49 (with $500 worth of included calls txt and mms) in all 3 colours
and it's been out for months.
I paid $320 for this phone from Amazon (unlocked 3G US version) to run it on AT&T and I think it's worth every penny. I love it. I much prefer it over the HTC Fuze it replaced. Does everything well and is *much* snappier than the Fuze. Plus here in NYC it stands out in a sea of iPhones and Blackberries (BTW, I have absolutely nothing against either of those phones, loved my BlackBerry Curve before it fell apart). Personally, I love the somewhat quirky Euro-aesthetic of the S60 OS.
