Shuttle gets extra official with luggable X50 all-in-one PC

Shuttle wasn't exactly tip-toeing around this one at CES in January, but the company has now gone the extra mile and gotten fully official with its new X50 all-in-one PC, which takes square aim at the likes of ASUS' Eee Top and other Atom-based nettops. As with ASUS' offering, this one packs a reasonably-sized 15.6-inch 1,366 x 768 touchscreen, along with the more nettop-minded Atom 330 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, a built-in 1.3-megapixel webcam and microphone, and a generous five USB 2.0 ports, among other standard fare. Unfortunately, it still doesn't look like this one is available to order just yet but, unless something major has changed since CES, you should be able to pick one up by the end of the month for about $500.

They call this one the "why not just get a convertible touchscreen tablet" PC.

Pretty much. But if you've already got a pretty decent laptop/notebook then this isn't bad as a 2nd PC to have around the house. I keep a PC in my family room with pretty much no personal data on it and very limited access to my network, it is mostly for house guests or my kids and their friends to use. Something like this is perfect for that situation.

Put it on a table next to a sewing machine and it will look right at home!

I had a Shuttle gaming PC I built when I was in college (still pretty fast considering that was around 7 years ago now), and that was perfect for my needs then, but I think they're becoming more and more niche (as in, more than they already were)
However, this one looks to be a great alternative to the HP Touchsmart for things like kitchen use/etc.

The Shuttle X50 has very similar spec to the Asus Eee Top PC. If this one really sells around $500, it will be $100 cheaper the Asus at NewEgg.

This is like a trip in time. Like the first 286 compaq "laptops" that looked like suitcases. With the windows 1.0 and dos 4.0. Everybody remembers these of course, I don't know why I even mention them.

I remember selling the Epson LTE 286 laptops, which were very similar to the Compaq model. One of the big selling points of the Epson was the easily swappable hard drive, for when you fill up the 20MB drive that came with it.
