Marantz unveils high-end UD9004 Blu-ray / SACD player
We can definitely see where this is headed. Hot on the heels of Denon's DVD-A1UD and OPPO's BDP-83 comes yet another Blu-ray player that does just a pinch more than handle audio CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray Discs. Unveiled as a prototype over in Munich, the Marantz UD9004 is just one format shy (it's lacking DVD-Audio support) of being a complete "universal" Blu-ray player. Said device, which is slated to get official sometime in 2009, is built upon the $6,500 SA-7S1 SACD player (pictured) and features a 10-bit Silicon Optix chipset, 14-bit video DAC, an SD card reader, RS-232 control interface, support for BD-Live and an Ethernet port. Outside of that, details are nonexistent, but we'll definitely be keeping an ear to the ground for more.

Nice to see SACD sort of staying alive. But the software scene is definitely bad. Maybe a time will come when high-res sound in movies causes people to ask for the same in music. Then again, I'm probably dreaming.
Must have this on SACD, says it all.

wait what the hell is a sa-cd ?

@turd
I love lmgtfy.com. the fact that people actually created this site to point out to people how stupid they are, is brilliant.
SACD is CD Music on Steriods.
SACD's have 64 time the sampling rate compared to CDs
SACD Samples a 28224 MHz or vs 44.1 KHz for CD (or 44,100 Hz)
CDs have an Audible Range of 20Hz to 20KHz or 20,000Hz
SACDs have an Audible Range of 20Hz to 100KHz (or 100,000Hz)
Such high frequencies are produced by many musical instruments but cannot be heard. Instead may cause resonatations in a room that may be felt, reproducing those frequencies is believed to help provide a more lifelike recording. It may also serve some scientific purposes as well.
(M = Mega = million) (K = Kilo = Thousand) (Hz = Hertz = Number of times per second)
Finally! A Bluray player that matches my gold-plated room and tv!!
ooooooo shiny
If saddam was still alive you know he'd have one of this in every palace.
You wouldn't happen to be Kent Brockman? eeerrrr...Kenny Brokelstein....
Ugh. Are the people who are rich enough to buy something like that blind? That thing is the fug.
the card reader really drives up the price, couldn't they offer a cheaper version without it?
drool....
The only Marantz-equipped home I've ever been in was so loaded to the gills with Home automation that the DVD player lived in a closet where it was never seen, or in other words, it didn't really matter what it looked like.
It is nice to know that there are still people that believe you can make 0 and 1 look different that they actually are ...
It is nice to know that there are still people who believe you can make music sound more like it was intended.
RS-232, SACD, did this item leak in from 15 years ago?
Not that there's anything wrong with those, but to see them mentioned as something fancy and advanced.. seems odd.
i agree. thats exactly what i thought.
1997 called, they......ah screw it. everyone's sick of that crap already. you get the idea.
rs232 is still the control standard for the a/v industry. look at the back plane of an AMX or crestron controller, you'll notice plenty of db9 connections for rs232.
USB is not stable enough for control systems.
Well it's been a wile (hours) since I replied and it didn't show up so once again:
Did you just say USB isn't stable enough? Say what?
Even at $2,000, this would be ridiculously overpriced. I know there are people who live and die by Marantz, but is this thing really that much more capable than a $400 PS3? Outside of automation, a 60GB PS3 has it beat!
Also: ugly. Ugly, ugly, ugly. I really don't get how gaudy always seems to be some kind of undying fashion.
Yes
at that price give me hd-dvd and I am sold.
hey awesome yeah ill make sure to play some sacd's on this. so does this play hd dvd too? betamax? atari 5200?
Throw in a 100 blu ray/sacd changer in that for $6000, and maybe it will be looked at buy more then a select few... but then again, for $6000, these select few probably have robots to change the disc.
It outputs gold plated pixes. Much better pixels than those that come out of your plebeian digital player.
You suck.
I would bet my left testicle that the upcoming Oppo will look and sound as good, if not better.
It's the whole 'price as a measure of quality' thing.
So this will compete with this: http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/03/denons-dvd-a1ud-worlds-first-universal-sacd-dvd-a-blu-ray/ for about the same money.
However, they are both made buy companies owned D&M Professional
I wonder if they will be basically the same bar the badge and case, or whether they were developed independently.
I also wonder if it come in black or silver.
