HTC Cedar portrait-style WinMo smartphone for CDMA hits FCC
Look out, Palm -- you've got what's apt to be a formidable opponent creeping right up on your next big thing. A frustratingly vague FCC filing has just appeared, which details (if you can even call it that) an elusive new HTC CEDA200 smartphone that's apparently portrait-styled, Windows Mobile-powered and ready to rock on a (gasp!) CDMA network. The filing clearly asks the dear ole FCC to hold photos until July 30th, which lines right up with that Q2 launch date we've heard about for a so-called HTC Cedar (or Willow). Obviously, it's too early to tell just yet if this is that very phone, but either way, you can count on something good from HTC crossing the CDMA airwaves in the not-too-terribly-distant future.

Sorry, what is the point of thhis article ?
iPhone Killer = Pre...
Now the Pre Killer is the ????????????? Some crap Winmo device that no one has seen demoed or named...
I'm still trying to figure that out. It's showing some ineptitude on a couple levels. This is what bugged me:
"Obviously, it's too early to tell just yet if this is that very phone"
Okay...HTC naming conventions of model numbers generally have the first 4 letters of the codename followed by a number. So, a phone named CEDA200 means the codename begins with 'Ceda'....is there any phone in HTC's lineup that matches that other than the Cedar? Not to mention, leaked info indicates a Q2 release, and FCC approvial a couple weeks before Q2 lines up with that perfectly.
So no, I don't think it's too early to tell, I think it would be foolish not to assume it coupld possibly be anything but the Cedar given the clues.
And I'm a big WinMo fan myself, but a Pre-killer, this ain't. Not even close. It might put the hurt on a few Treo models though.
Wasn't the BB Storm supposed to be an iPhone killer as well?
Yeah......we know how that turned out.
Uh, the Pre actually has a decent OS. I use WinMo but am more than thrilled for a pleasant change that is webOS.
The Pre doesn't have a decent OS. It's still vaporware.
You've never used one, so how could you possibly know it is decent?
I've got a feeling that PALM is going to miss their target date for launch. If it moves up to September or October or something, PALM is dead, dead, dead.
Remember, Apple had to pull a bunch of people from Leopard development to get the first iPhone out the door. And I'm pretty sure PALM doesn't have the resources that Apple has.
Spaceman, I don't think you know what vaporware means.
Yes, I suggest you look up Duke Nukem Forever...
It doesn't exist yet, and people are using it as a comparison to base other phones on. The Palm Pre hasn't been released yet, yet people are so certain that it's great. That's my point.
Instead of nitpicking the definition of "vaporware," maybe you should gobble my dick?
Dr Spaceman,
You are exactly the sort of person that gave homosexuals a bad name.
Don't hate on Dr. Spaceman! For all you know, he may come from a society wherein dick-gobbling is synonymous with "let's come to a mutual understanding and compromise". Perhaps, in said society, he is known as a great orator-cum-mediator, hence his PhD...quite possibly in dick gobbling it self!
What's not to like about a fresh, new OS that runs circles around Windows Mobile. Be honest for two seconds, do you really think any WinMo phone can beat the "what-we-have-seen Pre"?
Is there supposed to be something in that picture
This article must be after winning a prize for the most nonsensical, undetailed, uninformative Engadget article of the year.
HTC's FCC filing... at night.
no windows mobile 6.5 device can be a rival for them. But HTC is an known brand and generally people knows the brand they know even if less functionality and stability problems...
What the fuck are you trying to say?
Gotta be the Cedar for Sprint.
Sprint is getting the Willow, not the Cedar according to the leaked photos and roadmaps
its the HTC Black Magic
It's the HTC Cedar, it's Verizon's replacement for the Q9c. It will have WiFi and I think it will be a world phone, but I can't remember on that one.
WiFi on a Verizon Phone? Yea Right......Must be the Cedar or "Willow For Sprint"
Yes, WiFi like the Sammy i730, Sammy i760, HTC 6700, HTC 6800, Sammy i770 and Sammy Omnia all had/have.
@Dorf
Don't forget the Touch Pro!
Here is a question... I'm fairly sure this is a world phone like the BB 8830 or the Saga, but the filing only talks about CDMA tech..
So if the GSM radio only works outside the United States does the FCC not care about it?
Weird, I looked up the test report of the Saga i770 and it did list both CDMA and GSM. The Cedar does not. I could have swore it was a world phone...
The Cedar does mention CDMA Cellular and CDMA PCS, so does that make it a Push-to-Talk phone too?
PCS != PTT
PCS = Sprint's mobile internet system. It just means the phone will likely have rev A EVDO
Cellular and PCS refer to the bands it operates on:
Cellular meaning the 800/850mhz band and PCS being 1900mhz
I don't know wtf DssTrainer was talking about
The first thing that should be done with this phone, is for WM to be deleted and Android to have a clean install on it. Android sure needs a portrait-slider.
Sorry, but it clearly says Windows Mobile.
I'll just wait for the Touch Pro 2 with WM 6.5
Make a cameraless version!! PLEASE!
