Move over
RRoD, it looks like there's a new
Xbox 360 hardware failure in town. According to anecdotal data collected by
Joystiq as well as Google Trends, there's been a steady rise in reports and discussion of the E74 error since mid-October, with no apparent correlation between any specific model or year of purchase. From what we can tell, the E74 error is related to video problems caused by either a faulty AV connector or, more often, a loosened ANA / HANA scaling chip. Symptoms include visual glitches like random lines or snow and a single red light on the console in the lower right quadrant (see picture). The time frame for the rise in issues makes
NXE and its November debut a suspect, but it's worth noting that the uptick started just
before that launch, so perhaps it has more to do with hiccups caused by spurred interest in turning on the console after a long period of dormancy. We're curious to know how the issue has affected the Engadget readership. Has your Xbox 360 gotten the Red Arc of Death? Let us know in the poll below.

My launch xbox got the RROD about 3 weeks ago. I promptly went out and found a Jasper and it hasn't given me the first bit of trouble.
I had the E74 error on my 360 about 4 months ago and recently found out one of my friends does xbox 360 repairs for a local game store, he had it for about 3 days and fixed it for plus up the voltage that my fans run at, hit me up @ livE3vil@aol.com if your in the West Palm area of FL and want me point you his way!
I actually had that error earlier this week, at least I think it was the same error, but I restarted it and it worked fine and haven't had a problem since.
I got this error and do almost every time I start the machine immediately after installing the NXE. I have contacted Microsoft and they have blamed the cable. I have two standard cables and a VGA cable, all three have the same results.
My 360 has already been replaced twice and for that reason I suspect they waited on rolling out the NXE until after the initial 3 year warranty had expired for day one owners like myself.
My had that error, but it after trying to fix it by leaving it unplugged for a while, it RROD'd.
I dont know if it was the E74 error but my old xbox did get a bunch of weird colors, then eventually just stopped showing the screen altogether.
One year and two months after I got a 360 Elite, mine actually had visual errors (reduced color count - looked like windows safe mode - followed by random squiggly lines on a completely black screen) but did not get the single quadrant light. Microsoft refused to fix it unless I paid $100 - and even then they quoted the fix would take "a few months". I refused to give them another dime since my box had been well taken care of.
Finally, and thankfully, after months of turning it off and on and it working for a couple minutes for 1 try out of 10, it skipped the single light and went straight into RROD. I shipped it to Microsoft and it was fixed in less than a week.
I'm just annoyed that they refuse to admit that the RROD is not the only problem with their poorly constructed console. The fact that any other problem would cost $100 and take "months" to fix because of the priority given to RROD customers is ridiculous.
Someone prolly already noticed this but the light is actually in the lower LEFT, not the right, in orientation to power icon. Depends on if you have your system horizontal or vertical.
Would that be the bottom-left? It's just on it's side in that image.
This happened to me around September of 08 then 2 days after mine went dead my friends 360 did the exact same thing.
I waited to buy a 360 and finally shelled out for and elite when they got released and ive had it for a about a year. I bought resident evil 5 when it got released and 10 mins into the game, the screen froze and i got the symptoms of the E74 error. I turned my xbox off and when i started it back up i got the RROD!!!. Im kinda dissapointed about it lol.
My MS Refurbished has been flawless, though I did have a scare yesterday when my son bumped into the power strip and disconnected the power. I got 3 red lights, and freaked. (My son was fine). Fortunately, after reconnecting the power, everything was kosher.
I got this error, but i told microsoft that it was the 3 light ring. They fixed it free of charge..
I've had my xbox since 2 months after launch. Still livin. I mean when i turn on the system from the controller it only works 1 out of three times (too lazy to stand up and hit the button). And if games are scratched little it will scratch em more. And for some games half the time, halfway through the game, it will tell me its not readable, but when i restart everything is fine. So yeah its livin, but probably because i only use it like 2 times a week for like 30 minute periods.
"but it's worth noting that the uptick started just before that launch," [of the NXE]
Does anyone know if that statement is including the time frame prior to the full launch? There was a 'beta-ish' program running at least two weeks prior to the full release, if not longer.
got the e 74 error after testing advc 110 capture card, heres the vid :{

Like many others, I got the E74 not long after NXE update. Microsoft wanted $100 plus to fix it. Like others have said, the x-clamp fix took care of the problem. I have always been a supporter of Microsoft computers and gaming, but this whole thing has left a terrible taste in my mouth. Microsoft knows the E74 is caused by the same faulty parts as the RROD and basically just giving all its owners a big ole middle finger by not fixing it...
I will NEVER buy another Microsoft gaming system or PC for that matter...
M$ dose not make pc so you have never had one and yes M$ sucks at making hardware but 50% of the time its the users fault for allowing there system to over heat. (ps3 has a better cooling system)
Silly question but do you have to send in your hard drive or just the box minus the drive?
Do they strip out and replace parts or just give you someone elses refurbed one?
We have two consoles and both of them have had the E74 error. One console had the error twice. The majority of the time spent on both consoles has been playing Halo. I am curious if there is a correlation between the games played and the error. Is anyone aware of statistics around errors and games played?
Regardless of what games you play, I recommend you purchase the additional service agreement. To do so, your console needs to be under the one year warranty.
It's an outrage that we need to pay for the poor quality of the console however, if you have already purchased the product what else can you do? (Other that join a class action lawsuit, or fix it and sell it!) ~ Solid Planning
on my xbox the gpu fried and then i got that but the funnest and coolest thing is that the xbox ran for a month even though when it got too hot the screen go digital static on the screen and after a day of cooling it was fine again. but it died after the month then i bought a new one( i opened the xbox)
but most of the time its the av cables with that error
