Sony Ericsson's US president steps down
Quite honestly, we can't imagine now as being an awesome, jovial time to be heading up any division of Sony Ericsson. Thus, we're not too awfully shocked to hear that Najmi Jarwala, President of Sony Ericsson USA and Head of Region North America (comprising the US and Canada markets), has decided to leave his corner office at the end of March in order to "pursue other career opportunities." The announcement comes just a weekend after SE proclaimed that its Q1 sales were down some 50 percent, and with the outfit's somewhat lackluster showing at MWC (Idou notwithstanding), we can't imagine things magically turning around in the near future. At any rate, Anders Runevad (pictured), Executive VP and Head of Global Sales & Marketing will be taking over until a successor is named, and that's assuming anyone is willing to walk into such a severely precarious situation.[Via MobileBurn]

uh oh
nice choice of words... looking at that picture its like a grown up kid who has not been potty trained and has made a Bo-Bo in his pants but and knows it is a no-no
AHAHAHHA!
hey iGoon, isn't it nap time right now in Pre school? what are you doing up?
@Jacob
More like iPhone school. Pre school doesn't open till mid-year.
Rats leaving a sinking ship...
don't forget to take your $1,000,000 bonus on the way out to your limo...
AHAHAHAH!!!
i love it.
AHAHAHAH......no.
He probably has a multi-million dollar bonus in his contract anyway. :)
Ah, the great cell phone shakeout continues. When it's all said and done,
RIM, Apple will own the high end.
Nokia will take up the middle.
Samsung; LG will own the low end.
Mot and Sony/Ericsson get squeezed out.
.
.
Apple needs to release a high end phone first that will compete with the likes of the Pre.
SE are doing quite well in Europe and Asia Pacific markets, but I don't think they've ever done well in North America.
Sales are down, but they have a huge following plus there are that many SE phones on the market people just end up with them if they want them or not (good pre-paid option, most phones $0 on contract).
Other career oppurtunities and yet sales are 50% down. Sounds more like being forced to step down...
Totally agree with you Dan
Could very well be that the US is the country where they lost most of their market share. Did they release any regional numbers of the sales drop? Would be interesting. :)
That guy is Najmi Jarwala? Are you sure you've got the right pic there? Just doesn't look like a Najmi to me, that's all.
why don't you show your pic Kevo. We'll see if you really have hands and legs. +++king Americans live in a rat hole or a frog pond. They think if the guy has an Asian name, he looks ugly. +++king Americans ( and Brits )
Rahul, cool down man! That was totally uncalled for! Did you even try Googling Najmi Jarwala? You should. I believe this is a photo of him http://assets.bizjournals.com/story_image/208203-0-0-1.jpg
I'm an Indian and even I didn't think the guy pictured in the article was "Asian".
if i took over i'd have ericsson pissing on the competition
(itd be called Sony Skyblaze tho)
If this is the guy who is keeping some of Sony's decent products out of the U.S. than goodbye to you sir!
damn, I love my w760a :D
I start to feel bad and worried for SE. I own a SE X1 and i am really loving it. I consider it as the exotic phone of mobile phones (like a Lamborghini). This phone has a lot of nice stuff and i was really hoping for a SE X2 with android or wm7 or anything. Not many phone phones have style and can do a lot of things. I am worried if something goes bad and the company stops producing phones then is going be lack of service and that is really bad.
I really hope SE come back at their feet, tbh is the company with some of the best audio and camera line phones imo.
I long wanted a Sony-Ericsson Walkman phone (i.e. good camera, MP3-capable media player that has Mac connectivity [I own both a home-built PC and 24" iMac and use my iMac more], FM tuner, and a good usable phone) but due to the way the U.S. cell phone carriers play out and the fact my family left AT&T for a CDMA carrier... S-E isn't even an option. I do believe S-E has some very nice phones but unless they become available on the carrier of choice for my family (U.S. Cellular; I'd prefer AT&T or TMobile but that was their choice), I'm pretty much left to other phones. Looking at the selection available on U.S. Cellular's phone roster... some S-E goodness would do them good. Most of the Non-smartphone options = blah and ho-hum. Sony-Ericsson could make a killing if they put in the effort.
Yes!
Now maybe they will make some decent keypads!
boooring...
That is not a picture of Najmi Jarwala. Najmi Jarwala is Asian/Indian decent. Sony Ericsson left the CDMA market because they failed at it about 6 years ago. If they can’t be successful in GSM which is the largest market in the world why would they try to go back to a market they already failed at? Sony Ericsson is down and will probably not get back up. If you read other news websites Sony and Ericsson are having relationship issues and it seems like they want a divorce. They missed the boat with I-Phone/Blackberry type of phones and the other companies just provided better quality products.

that's the real one says google.
Oh and missed the boat? Sure they don't have an iphone but they do have like 50% of the market in the EU from what I gather and there are an awful lot of people what don't visit engadget and that want a phone that just calls and takes shoddy pictures for their myspace and what not, and who get scared by too many apps, so yeah they missed the boat but that's only important if the boat goes where you wanted to go.
Stepping down or stepping up? Or stepping out? Or cashing his contractual severance bonus before they break up the company?
Good, have fun leaving the sinking ship captain! And take your shit products with you!
Wwhat,
You must be right. That is why they are bleeding money and losing market share worse than Nokia, Samsung, and LG.
If they are bleeding marketshare they must be really trying to lose.
