Vuze brings online video to game consoles, portable media players
Sheesh -- this is dangerously close to getting out of hand. We've got Hulu, boxee, ZeeVee and Vuze (amongst others) all vying for your attention in the wide world of broadband video, but it's the latter dishing out a potent new offering with its latest version. Today, Vuze has announced a new iteration of its online video portal application that integrates playback with iPhone, iPod, AppleTV, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 devices. So far as we can tell, no other competitor offers that much integration (read: direct Mac / PC-to-device transfers) across so many products. Of course, none of this matters if you aren't a fan of Vuze itself, but you can surf on over to download it (gratis, naturally) in order to test the waters.

There are some other really good apps out there that achieve this. I'm not a big fan of the direction Vuze went I use utorrent but I stream all of my content using ORB (http://www.orb.com/). Another good one to check out is TVersity (http://tversity.com/). Both great apps for streaming content to devices. The great thing about ORB is that you also get a logon to access you're content over the internet (for free). It's Pretty sweet.

For PS3, try PS3Mediaserver. Easiest to use yet!

Its all about (http://www.sling.com/) especially if you have a slingbox...

There is also an app called PlayOn which provides streaming for a ton of online content (including Netflix), but the program itself costs around $40 (IIRC). I personally use TVersity, but there are a lot of good DNLA media servers around these days.

-- sarcasm -- Wow! "Watchmen" already out on DVD? That was fast!

The sad thing is, not many of these options work with macs. Hopefully, the Vuze option will. Boxee is nice, but won't play a lot of formats and AppleTV get's flaky streaming some HD. I've love to get my PS3, AppleTV, or my Pioneer Kuro (DNLA also) to all work with my mac/network and be able to access my HDDs and play most movie formats.

I use this program for torrenting and had no idea it did anything more :) It always prompted me to "get started" but I always canceled. This project was formerly named Azureus.

Someone just turn this into a Plug In for Playon and call me when its done.

You know what's great about Vuze and some of the other BitTorrent clients? By default they advertise themselves as uPNP devices, so when your neighbor jumps on your wireless connection and she has one of these clients running, you can access her files without hitting any of those pesky ACLs.
It's the whole ease-of-use vs security debate, but some of these apps create such gaping security holes it's frightening.
beans @ Mar 23rd 2009 1:30PM
isn't that more your problem than the program's considering you have your network open to your neighbor? (or your neighbor's problem since she's using your network?)
PG @ Mar 23rd 2009 1:44PM
The security hole is you not knowing how to use your router correctly.
MarionBarfs @ Mar 23rd 2009 2:27PM
this comment has so many holes in it, it's frightening.

C'mon guys, showing a pirated clip from The Watchmen isn't really fair. There are legit uses for Vuze (just not that many.....).
Jake @ Mar 23rd 2009 1:52PM
It's just the trailer for Watchmen. It's been on the (ad-supported, legit) Vuze HD Network for weeks.
GwL @ Mar 23rd 2009 2:00PM
what about PlayOn?
Ordeith @ Mar 24th 2009 1:44AM
Costs more than Burnout Paradise.
Fail.

I can't get to the page on my work network, can someone explain how it works?
Tversity encodes stuff on the fly and sends it to whatever is hooked up, can this do the same?
FThorn @ Mar 23rd 2009 2:05PM
Vuze is my tool of choice.

Another PlayOn supporter here!!

has anyone tried to get it to work on the 360? i want to use my non media center eeepc for playing videos. its just detecting the device.
TREX6662k5 @ Mar 23rd 2009 3:54PM
Its such bloatware, I always resort to using Classic UI
Justin @ Mar 24th 2009 1:54AM
Looks awesome!
IceMan @ Mar 24th 2009 5:38AM
I tried this on my PS3, Xbox360 and iPhone, all worked like a charm. This is a very good add-on, no need to transcode videos yourself, it does it for you. I'm enjoying all the sexy clips up on my big screen! Huzzah! :)
Taikyosan @ Mar 24th 2009 9:49AM
I tried this using Gundam 00 S2 episode 24 and i got the video with no problem but i didn't get any sound. It took 3 hours to convert 490MB of video on a NAS. I'm going to try with Skip Beat episode 24 later, thats only 198MB or so.

How come engadget uses the swedish word "gratis" when they want to point out that something is free?
True_Darknight @ Mar 25th 2009 4:10PM
Mayber they are using the SPANISH word 'Gratis' ( which means free)!!!!!

hi,
I am very pleased with the thought and don’t feel like adding anything in it. It’s a perfect answer.
