Archos 5 Snap-on TV DVB-T tuner reviewed on video with disarmingly alluring soundtrack
If you're still on the fence about picking up the Snap-on TV DVB-T tuner for your Archos 5, the crew at the French-language site Archos Lounge have snagged a copy and run it through the ringer. Turns out that even with that extra antenna, you'll still need to be reasonably close to the signal source and preferably not blocked by too many walls if you plan on enjoying a broadcast. If all the conditions are optimal, they say it's a pretty decent attachment. If that's not enough, they also produced a "moving pictures" version of their review, completely with a rather kicking soundtrack. Dim the lights, grab some popcorn, and check out the video after the break.

It would be great to follow engadget on Twitter as opposed to RSS or checking the site for new posts. Fans of the site would then get automatic alerts in their twitter feed when there is new content to read.
I got the idea from ChannelFlip's Wil Harris. It just needs a dedicated Twitter account setting up and connecting up to your RSS feed using say twitterfeed.com. Anyone who wants engadget content in their Twitter would follow that special Twitter account. Better for you, engadget, to do this once than each follower have to set up their own.
A note on how it works is here: http://hastalavistavista.com/2009/03/24/how-to-publish-your-blog-as-a-twitter-feed/
Engadget is on twitter. :)

Soundtrack is by Air -- Spacemaker, if anybody cares......
Probably not.
Yes of course it is. I should have checked. It is in fact set up the way I described using twitterfeed. Maybe they should have a link to their Twitter somewhere - or maybe I've missed that too.
You're a Genius.
Meanwhile... on the topic of this post.
That device is a pretty slick add-on. However, therein lies the problem. It's an add-on, as are most of the features of the Archos which is why it falls short of the Cowon.
except the comparison between Archos and Cowon doesn't really work because Archos are the only quality PMPs you can get with large capacity. If you're happy with a few GBs then get a Cowon or a Touch but if you want to carry all your music, loads of films and TV and still have room to transfer your photos, i.e., a perfect device for travelling, the Archos is you're only choice and it does loads of other stuff too (internet, TV, DVR, GPS...supposedly soon). Their customer service is appalling and the fact that you have to buy a dock just to get a charger is a joke but the product itself is fantastic and the frequent firmware updates are gradually ironing out the niggles. The Zagg invisibleshield also takes away the shiny fingerprint issue and protects it at the same time. I love mine.
I had no idea the Archos was so shiny. The HQ video shows a ton of fingerprints.
Maybe some potential when in a big city. I've never had any luck with mobile TV in the suburbs or out in the sticks, where you may really want it. And OTA programming would have to improve dramatically, or the unit would need to be priced almost free for me to bother with the mythical ATSC version.
But I could watch French actresses trying on shoes all day.
I watched the video, pretty sweet, PQ is great, wish they made a tuner for the USA.
I love the touch screen, it's like the i-phone, it's awesome and easy to navigate the channels.
@Issac Since for some reason "reply" wouldn't work.
While true, the Cowon gives you everything you need. GPS is widely available on all kinds of platforms, I don't need it on my PMP when it's on my phone. TV is pointless in America, who wants crappy antenna TV on an PMP? DVR, the Cowon has that. I agree with your point on capacity. 250GB is a much prettier number than 80GB, but I'd prefer what is IMO a more complete device, and have to offload it if needed (at 80GB that won't be very often, even if I'm putting 720P video, which it does support, on the device) I can do so (for lack of better term) iPod-style.
But the Archos does look cooler.
Would be nice if Archos was also in the business of external portable LCD monitors for camera shooting...
I know my archos 604 you can use as a portable external monitor as long as you have RCA outputs for your camera... since the RCA cable is both input and output..
Am I the only one interested in the music? It's pretty cool! Wish I knew who it was.
As to the other stuff, doesn't iRiver make a PMP with a rather large capacity that plays everything? Archos is well known sure, but Cowon isn't their only competition.
sounds like "Air", but it's a track I don't know
ErrorKid is right : that's _SpaceMaker_, first track on _PocketSymphony_ which I believed to be the latest _Air_ album. French band for a french PMP ;)
Look them up, you ll find good electronic music there :)
I wonder if its work here in japan with the tv...
you live in japan?!
...what's it like there?
I didn't find any official specs, but the descriptions I found don't mention ISDB (Japanese terrestrial DTV)
BTW, any chance of a live performance this year, maybe at WARP 20 somewhere ?!?
I can only say, Antenna's Break very easily. That joint in the middle, if not taken care to put it back will possibly be bent or completely broken off within the first year. I don't understand these add-ons built in this fashion. I thought the Future of tech would finally do away with the unsightly things. Wouldn't a flat antenna that slides into itself be a better alternative? It's 2009 not 1979.
Totally agree. You must be a genius! ;-)
Where's the ATSC tuner?
Nice. All music players over a certain size should have built-in TV. Of course, the U.S. doesn't have any mobile TV infrastructure. Digital TV is fairly decent in the NYC metro area, but I'm getting mine from a roof mounted near-fringe UHF antenna. I'm not sure what type of reception rabbit-ears will get. I hear watching that TV is a battery guzzler.
For some reason I keep thinking they mean strap-on, not snap-on because it's from France.
