GE quietly delays premium HDTV line
General Electric came clean with its intentions to delve into the wide world of HDTVs last September... and then the economy, as well as GE itself, fell apart. Earlier this year, we were actually clued in on some of the details surrounding the Tatung-built sets, but now we're hearing that the company is pushing everything back by around three months. GE maintains that the setback is due to "marketing rather than operational or manufacturing issues," though we all know right about now isn't the greatest time to introduce new high-end televisions. We also get the idea that GE may use the time to better implement connected HDTV features given just how prevalent those were at CES, but again, we're really just shooting in the dark here. Oh, we forgot to even ask -- does anyone care that GE's getting back into the TV biz, let alone that its forthcoming sets are delayed?

now thats high def.
That's what I call pure awesomeness, it would be even sweeter if its was BetaMax!
That home cinema kicks ass!
that thing is retro sweet!
it has a pull out bed in the bottom
For some reason, I smell dust when I look at that picture...
LOL thats all i have to say
Honey I shrunk the TV salesman.
It's not guns I fear, It's the man standing behind the gun.
General Electric Still produces land mines which kill people on a daily basis.
Keep that in mind when you purchase their products.
Hippies still produce stupid comments every day which annoy people every day
keep that in mind when you follow a stupid fad.
They also own NBC which helps sell the Wars that their wares are used within. They are part of that Military Industrial Complex that President Eisenhauer warned us of. However they also make Wind Turbines and Fuel Cells and 30 Rock so it's difficult to shake the same finger at the entire company.
Brian
I'm confused,
if youre here, then who is there to manage the nearest Starbucks or Borders?
Also its great to know that if and when you or loved ones are ever killed by a souless company's IP, that caring about it is simply a fad.
Never been in a starbucks, never will :)
BTW, why would one of my loved ones ever be in a landmine-filled area?
Seriously, go be mad at the soldiers who laid them in the wrong area, or stupidly put them there on purpose.
So what? The US government kills people every day, should I keep that in mind when paying my taxes?
Cars kill thousands every day, should I keep that in mind when I see them on the road?
Meat results in the death of thousands of animals every day, should I keep that in mind when I sink my teeth into a ribeye?
Personally, I think landmines are badass, should I keep that in mind as I rush to the store to buy a GE HDTV?
Oh, and just to make your day, I thought I'd let you know that most of my closest friends work for the local defense contractor making missiles and munitions which kill people, lots of people.
Do everyone a favor and go jump on one of those landmines.
Pfft.
Well, to use your logic - you should also refuse to fly - since many military transports are built by Boeing. I don't support land mine production - however, if there is no demand for the production - they won't be built. SOMEONE is going to produce them - and someone is going to order them. Supply and Demand.
Again, I don't like land mines and it would suck to step on one. But they build a LOT of things that are good (wind turbines for example - and cheap digital cameras) just like boeing does. Never mind the fact that they also build military planes which have killed MILLIONS of people - and I still get on a Boeing 737 from time to time to fly away to some location I want to travel.
People don't kill people. Landmines kill people!!
Sounds like some misplaced anger to me. You can't blame the people placing the mines, so you take out your aggression on an inanimate object?
@Alistair loveless
You watch too much fox noise
stop being so idealistic and self-righteous. war and tools of war have existed since the beginning of man, and they're unlikely to go away any time soon. what do you want our soldier to fight with? teddy bears? you know, sometimes violence IS the only answer.
@Luke
I think you mean he's been watching MSDNC. He sounds like an ignorant liberal hippie to me, not a religious Republican.
(By the way did you get the DNC thing I threw into MSNBC? I actually do know their name.)
@Alex
Fox news constantly attacks GE because it owns NBC and they hate MSNBC, that is where most of these negative stories about GE come from, fox news. That is why I said the he must watch too much fox news comment.
@ Alex
HAHAHAHAHA I never thought of it like that....MSDNC!!!! Very creative, keep up the good work!
And to the hippie tool, the next time you go protesting a military recruiting office or something just remember that the people working there gave you the rights that make your stupid protest possible.
@Alistair...never let the facts get in the way of a good story.
You are factually wrong about GE being involved in landmine production. There was actually a shareholder proposal in the 2001 proxy that can be referenced at http://www.ge.com/pdf/investors/financial_reporting/proxy_statements/GE.NP.pdf where GE's Board formally responded with the following (see pages 39 & 40):
"GE is not involved in landmine or cluster bomb production. GE does not
make these devices, nor sell parts or components for use in the production of
these devices. In 1997, GE advised the Human Rights Watch Arms Project that
GE was not supplying material or components to any manufacturer of landmines.
GE still does not. Because GE is not involved, and has no intention of
becoming involved in the future, your Board believes adopting an additional
policy as requested by the proposal is unnecessary and, therefore, recommends
a vote against the proposal."
you don't deserve that cloud avatar after that comment
don't hate on a company because they produce weapons. weapons don't kill people my friend. people kill people. without a will to use (or lay in the case of land minds) there is no damage done. and its because of people that we need weapons. so don't go blaming GE, who I'm not even sure actually make land mines (you may be buying into propaganda propagated by various news networks in their ongoing quarrels with each other since they are all biased one way or another) when it isn't their fault that landmines kill people. Blame the people who can't seem to make peace with one another (which is the story of man kind, so I don't know what to tell you...)
OH, and that is one BEASTLY TV set there. Where can I get my hands on one of those behemoths?!
man we've come a long way....and on a more related note, I'd like to see GE get into the HDTV business and see what they have to offer
@Alistar
Better go chop down every tree you see, since I'm sure those have been used to kill all sorts of people in all sorts of different ways. While you're at it through away everything you have with steel, bronze, copper, or lead in it. Better yet, why don't you go join peta and that dumb broad up in the NE protesting shooting virtual dogs in a video game. If we're lucky you'll all get run over by a bus.
I don't think high-end when I think GE Consumer Electronics. Unless it's an awesome product I see Epic Failure.
i might take them more seriously if they updated their logo.
so unless it's a good product you think it's bad. that seems pretty obvious to me.
A little searching revealed that this tv is in fact a small CRT that had it's image fliped and then magnified onto a transparent screen. It's no where close to that actual size haha.
Sweet! Maybe they'll throw one in with every set to keep the kids away from the TV. ;)
mmm well no comment
Is that Larry King?
Who, that? Nooooo... they didn't even have electricity back when he was that young looking!
:)
Funny you should ask that, I am watching Larry King Live as we speak!
They should totally cover it in 1960s-style wood paneling... hey, at least it'd look different from anyone else's.
Build it into a cabinet with wood paneling. Then you've got a winner.
GE really wants to start manufacturing more actual objects, and fewer fake "financial" objects.
GE is going under...its only a matter of time before they file bankruptcy.
They paid the price for having hippies run the company and making it go "green". 'going green' isn't economical, and they have since found that out.
profound ignorance is profound

Oh yeah, looks like they're doomed.
GE's credit rating tells me they are going to be around for a while.
There's only one day of the year when you're allowed to mention "GE" and "high end" in the same article, and that day's a week away yet.
GE, TV, and High End don't belong in the same sentence. Nor does the word "appliances" (we had their "High end" appliances when we moved into our current house, needless to say they stopped working/don't exist anymore).
But they do have SOME nice stuff... like 3D ultrasound machines!!!
I had one of those VCR's.
OMG. So did we! Ours was branded Sears. Top-loader, with a remote control! Ok, the remote was wired, and it only had one function: pause. And, when you paused it, the screen went black. A side effect was that the tape would rewind a few seconds, so you could use it as a "i just missed that" button, too. Fun times.
Reminds me of what GE's chairman said on 9/11. I'm paraphrasing:
"The attacks hit us pretty badly. Airplanes owned by us and leased to the airlines, with engines built by us, crashed into buildings insured by us."
Remember how horrible those old RPTV's looked?
Guys, read the fine print...
the video cassette recoder is OPTIONAL.
The whole high perfrmance TV thing is a scam, they just want to make money off thier V.C.R.'s
Seeing such a TV brings back memory LOL. My dad bought and 'TV enlarger screen' that works similar to that 'big screen display'. To make it work, you had to turn the TV upside down and project its screen onto a lens than projection screen like that one. The only thing is the TV was a TUBE TV that broke down a few hours of watching the 'big screen'. Looks like the tubes didn't like being upside down LOL.
lol I want a TV like that
