Flash coming to Android courtesy of BSQUARE
The fine folks at BSQUARE have announced that they'll be porting Adobe Flash to Google's Android on behalf of a "global Tier 1 carrier." Whether or not that implies this "global Tier 1 carrier" will have exclusive access to Flash out of the gate remains to be seen. Details are otherwise very scarce, and it's unclear how this relates to the demo of Flash Andy Rubin showed off at Adobe MAX last year. However, BSQUARE bought NEC's Adobe® Flash® Technology Consulting and Distribution business 12 months ago, and has done Android work for other customers, so the expertise should certainly be there -- and naturally we wouldn't expect them to go shouting about this if they didn't have Adobe and Google's blessing in one form or another.

Meanwhile, I've been viewing Flash on my S60 browser for some time now...
Um, pardon my noobiness, but what is S60? is that Nokia's OS?
Yup, Symbian Series 60, a smartphone OS developed originally by Psion used most often by Nokia, but also by Samsung and a few other companies on occasion. Most used smartphone OS worldwide, but not anywhere near the top in the US.

sorry had to
And they cant do this for the iphone??????? i hate this
they can but they don't want to, and that kind of control over what you are allowed to do on the os is one of the reasons why i wouldn't buy an iphone.
exactly (as tiffany said it). you make your choices when you buy the iphone (like not being able to load non approved apps without doing that ridiculous jailbreaking nonsense, etc)
This what I wanted to hear. Yah Apple Fan bois eat your 3.0. We're having Flash on this end!
No Danny, I will not "eat it". Just because I chose to support a certain brand, does not make me lesser. How was I supposed to know that Apple would not support the iPhone's software like it should? And no, i'm not an Apple fanboy. I don't really like my iPhone, i kinda regret buying it, and I can't wait for the Pre, im gonna buy one as soon as I can!
Now it will really be choppy when your scrolling a page.
I'd like to see the hang time for that when you exit out of the app as well.
Exits out of hulu....
Where are my home page icons????
Wait for it..............
Wait for it.........
Wait for it........
Oh! there they are!!
Ha i had to laugh at this. Steve Jobs is going to single-handedly fuel the downfall of the iPhone with his Nazi beliefs about how a smartphone/mobile device should be. Hey Hitler, you're not gonna change the world, give the people what they want. But i guess by the time the iPhone gets Flash, the only people left with an iPhone are gonna be the fanboys while the rest of the world has wisened up to hype and false pretenses that the iPhone was and moved on to a device with a better software. Its not the hardware that makes the phone, its the software, and Apple is not cutting it anymore with the demands of what their customers need. Now if someone would port Android to the iPhone post flash, it would Pwn the current OS.
@setnev
LOL. U can at least make that comment after they drop the new iPhone. Right now it just makes u look like a huge ignorant apple hater. Flash ain't everything that makes the phone. Apple still has a bunch of people on their nuts.
Well i didnt mean to sound ignorant but all i think is that Apple was king until people started realizing that the phone wasn't as cracked up to be as Apple made it. I don't hate Apple, i just think that with Steve Jobs single-handedly making the decisions on what should define a Mobile Device is a little rash and me thinks that whatever Steve Jobs says goes with Apple. He is anti-Flash which is why there wont be Flash in the foreseeable future for the iPhone and whatever else other contending phones have that the iPhone doesn't that current iPhone customers demand, will not come to the phone unless Steve Jobs okays it. Hell, he won't even let his wife own another phone and she admitted to be "not too fond of the iPhone". That there by letting one person control how the feature development of one phone that is so popular and not the popular vote, will be the major downfall in the iPhone.
@Setnev
Knowledge is power, so store these little bits if will-
Jobs said Flash wasn't suited for the iPhone as a full version (bad battery life and performance), and the mobile version Adobe currently had to offer them wasn't good enough. He was looking for something in between, optimised for optimal iPhone performance, but not looking and/or operating like something from the early 90's.
Less than two months ago, Shantanu Narayen (the president and chief executive officer of Adobe) stated this:
"It's a hard technical challenge, and that's part of the reason Apple and Adobe are collaborating," Narayen told Bloomberg Television. "The ball is in our court. The onus is on us to deliver."
KiP FTW!
K.R.S.O.N.E.
Aww for god's sake!! Android has been out for how long?! what, like a year? And it is now getting flash!! and the iPhone has been out for what... 2 years and STILL doesn't have this!!! Can someone please tell me why i bought an iPhone?
Its not that im unhappy that android is getting flash, far from it. im just angry that the handset i chose to buy is being outstripped by other devices that have been on the market for half the time. again, nothing against android.
The iPhone doesn't have it because Steve J thinks it doesn't belong on mobile devices.
And it seems now that Steve's word on what should be on a mobile device outranks market research and customer demands.
If someone would port an integrated version of flash to the iPhone that didn't make it look like it was running OS Frankenstein it would probably be in the next update. Apparently there is a good version under review, fingers crossed!

@ Simon
Android's been out for about 5 months.
The iPhone doesn't have flash yet because Apple is so obsessed with controlling everything about their phone that anything beyond games, tip calculators, and notepads get rejected from the app store. (Not really, but I think you get my point about Apple's draconian control over their phone)
Actually, Android has only been available since October 22nd as the HTC G1 / Dream in the US. So, five months...
iphone may have flash player 2010 summer. Not before.
Another reason not to get the toyPhone er.. I mean iPhone.
Those stupid wankers at Apple. What a bunch of clueless morons!
Now I'm just waiting for a high-end Android device
indeed. i don't think our G1s can handle hulu n whatnot
my thoughts exactly. i dont think our G1s can handle hulu and whatnot...
stupid comment system... wake up already and give us a delete button engadget!
Steve Jobs doesn't like Flash.
bag of hurt
Sounds like progress, though this really sounds like something commissioned by a specific carrier for a specific phone, rather than something that will simply add flash to your G1 or Magic.
and I'm sure the .apk will be promptly ripped off of that phone and available for G1 users as well :) Good ol' xda-developers
nice
Well..Flash..Flash...Flash your tits girl!
This might be Flash Lite, which is a very limited version.
Has anyone seen Flash on a mobile.. Huh? I have .. it looks and performs like crap.. Now the G1 can get even WORSE battery life than it already does. Oh, and it's a real blast to immediately run out of room for your apps.. (G1's don't let you install apps on SD cards without a warranty voiding hack) Caching all the flash on a G1.. Good times. iPhone wins again.. and don't get me started on the pathetic app store that the G1 has.. And the finally little ditty.. This is carrier specific.. and NOT T-Mobile.. Good times Google.. Good times. iPhone flash will be done right.. It's being developed now...
HAHAHA, I like how you go through how horrible flash is on mobile phones and then immediately tout that the iphone will eventually get it. Oh, and it'd be TOTALLY IMPOSSIBLE to have the browser just not cache any flash content. Also, hate to tell you, but getting root on the phone doesn't void the warranty. Unlike with the iphone hacks it doesn't require doing anything but using RC29(which still ships on the phone) and using that to give yourself root privileges and using basic linux commands(also built into the phone) to do whatever you need. Pathetic app store? Care to back that up? And the final little ditty... However carrier specific this is, xda-developers will take the .apk file out and provide it to use freely with the G1 FOR T-Mobile. Good times mblind... Good times. G1 flash will also be done right and is also being developed right now and started significantly earlier than for the iphone by google and adobe, themselves.
in short.... you fail.
multi-touch alternative for single touch devices: http://concepts.shpe.ro/ZoomRotate.php
demo video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oji_Csv2m_0
mblind that is untrue, you can download apps to your sd card via an app that allows you to do so. And my battery life isn't horrible but it is not great I admit. Stop being such a Apple c*cksucker
with all that d*ck in your mouth I can't hear you..
and please enlighten me and provide a source for your false allegation of Flash being developed for apple? Even engadget has posted the contrary, and that they doubt Apple and Blackberry will get it any time soon. And even if it was who said it will get the stamp of approval from Steve Jobs?
Gotta love those die hard CrApple fan-boys. Just keep with the rest of the flock over at Giz and stay off Engadget, okay.
G1 outperforms every device on the market hands down. in overall terms of looks function and usability etc etc. Love it
I have the hero ROM and it works ok with flash... some websites work and some don't (yet). But it is a far cry from 2010 (is that accurate?) for the iphone. Also, I have the G1. So there fan boys....lol :)
