Mercedes-Benz's F-CELL Roadster is chock-full of win
Mercedes-Benz has been toying with alternative-energy prototype vehicles for awhile now, but we're fairly certain this little gem is amongst the most bodacious. The obviously conceptual F-CELL Roadster hearkens back to M-B vehicles of old, though the engine is far from retro. Controlled with drive-by-wire technology and utilizing a joystick rather than a conventional steering wheel, this whip is (theoretically, at least) powered by a 1.2kW emission-free fuel cell system located at the rear. We're told that it could reach an enviable top speed of 15.5mph, and the 217 mile operating range definitely has us salivating. Frankly, this one's all about the design, and we can't implore you enough to give the read link a visit for lots more high-res action.

The return of the horseless carriage. Do you bring your own lantern?
i challenge you to a duel, sir. meet me in the alleyway behind the cooper's
If it has little compartments for snuff and chewing tobacco, I'm sold.
You probably need somebody to walk in front of it with a flag too.
Here we go again more Mercedes news. The Model T has cheaper parts (The Model T had a front mounted, 177 in3 (2.9 L) four-cylinder) and can still get you from point A to point B. Are people so ignorant that they would buy a Mercedes over the Ford?
I am giving up on Engadget. This is getting ridiculous.
Quick throw a blanket over the car a horse is coming!!!!
great, 1 pot-hole or some asshole's boot and the wheels are screwed.
all i need are my racing gloves, racing goggles, and my white racing scarf
This has got to be the funniest sub-thread ever.
"all i need are my racing gloves, racing goggles, and my white racing scarf" -- and a nefarious cackle (as traffic flies past you).
The wheels might be easy to damage, but they would be equally easy to true. Any bike shop could do it for a few bucks.
Yep, it looks god-awful. Carriage meets f1 racer.
what does the F stand for? Flintstone?
huh ahh Beavis ahh fuel cell?
I just threw up a little in my mouth.
April 1st? No. wtf!
Give it some decent high-tech wheels, and it would be awesome. As it is now, it looks a bit odd with those old fashioned wheels.
I get what they're trying to achieve with them, but it's not working out too well.
Imagine if you hit pothole... lol
"I get what they're trying to achieve with them, but it's not working out too well."
Are you talking about the looks? If so, you don't get it.
OMGosh if I could just get past the "ugliness" of it. Whew!

Now that I know the Arabs (who have horrible record on human rights) have bought 3 billion dollars worth of shares in Mercedes, I'm staying away from any future vehicles they make. I understand they are doing this to finance their electric car plans, but in my mind, the end don't justify the means (it would be like recycling our money back to the source of our problems).
Yes, because ALL Arabs are chauvinistic pigs with absolutely no regard for human rights, which is a perfect reason not to purchase a concept vehicle that will never make it to production in any way, shape or form.
Moron.
Of course since the US does really respect the rights of it's citizens, time to move away ASAP?
@Farris
I'm not talking about all Arabs, but the one who invested in Mercedes, more precisely the government of Abu Dhabi which along with the rest of the Arab Emirates exploit foreign workers, chastisize gays and demean women. And I'm not talking about this car, but any car they make, they won't profit from me. If you aren't happy with your record, then do something to change it, don't come attacking me for simply stating your cruel reality.
oh man you just posted that to get some controversy going on right? if we're really going to get to that, then i wont buy american (hiroshima, vietnam, guantanamo, etc etc), german (ww1 and 2), french (napoleon was a bastard), chinese (theres just so much to write about them) or any car at all. I'll keep on riding a peruvian llama, the incas didnt hurt anyone did they?
@oliveros123
Sorry, but I can't give the a free pass. By the way, America has taken steps to correct all of the 3 aforementioned issued. This can't be said of the Emirates, I am hopfull to do so in the future, but as of today it is not.
@Tohe
"Arab Emirates exploit foreign workers"
I'm black, I always feel exploited.
"Chastisize gays"
Oh well!
"Demean womens"
Damn you, ARABS
@comments4cheap
Tell your "Oh well!" to Alex: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/01/world/middleeast/01dubai.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin
Tohe, i get what you mean, and you do have a point, there are bad things going on there (and in much of the rest of the world as well), but there are much better ways to try to change it. By the way, when you put gas in those over sized American cars, chances are that youre still giving money to some of those governments.
@tohe
Oh well, we Haitians have a saying "when you can sit down, you sit down." Meaning stay home or in your native country next time.
Looks like a Formula1 horse buggy.
It doesn't have lasereyes and yet I still want one...
15.5mph, sounds like its for people to lazy to ride a bike. Of course the mileage isn't bad but I would never go 217 miles at that speed. You know how long that would take, jeez.
14 hours
14 hours give or take?
I know how long it would take. I just think going that speed would suck. I'd much rather do 60 and be there much sooner.
You do realize this isn't exactly intended for long distance trips, do you?
So Train A leaves New york at 6:59am travelling due west at 12.6 miles per hour. Train B...
too much to type for a joke...
Make that engine 10 times faster, slap some AMG engineering on it as well, a modern high performance approach to those archaic wheels, and a windshield and you'll have yourself a customer.
If you're going for efficiency, wouldn't you put decent wheels on the damn thing?
Serious? Those are probably the most 'efficient' wheel design ever. Light weight, low drag...
Wire wheels aren't the most efficient ever. They were definitely the most efficient at the time, but newer three- or four-spoke composite designs are much more drag efficient.
Scabby, prove your claim. Wire wheels offer much less cross section than any composite shape. They can also be made lighter than composites. This car's wheels seem to be able to do without so many spokes.

^did you see what I did there?
I see what you did there.
You Sir, are awarded 1 internetz.
I hope "97" is designating what year you were born.
Those wheels would last for 1 trip with the pot holes around here.
Put some indy car wheels on it, a tail fin, a max speed of 80mph, and make it an EV with high tech batteries that can provide enough power to go 20-30 miles and they might have something.
Those wheels are a special type of ridiculous.
I don't understand. Why would you only want to go 15 MPH? That's ridiculously slow for something that would most likely cost you alot of money considering it has the mercedes name on it. Why make something that does the job of a bicycle for the price of a car (I'm assuming)?
basically for the uber-rich people out there, they can use this to get from their house to their guest house instead of some crappy-looking golf cart.
think billy madison, but less funny.
because i can only walk about 3 miles an hour? i'm not good with numbers, but that's, like, 12 more miles.
