Nintendo ships 50 million Wii consoles, which still isn't enough
Earlier this month, both AMD and IBM announced that they had shipped the 50 millionth Wii GPU and CPU, respectively, so it was only a matter of time before Nintendo came forward to say what everyone was already thinking: the Big N has shipped 50 million Wii consoles worldwide. Today at the outfit's Game Developers Conference keynote, Satoru Iwata confirmed that it had moved "more than 50 million" units, making it "the fastest selling video game hardware in history." Interestingly enough, the company also announced its 100 millionth DS shipment just under a fortnight ago, so it's pretty safe to say things are going well in the Mushroom Kingdom. Now, if only it could get through a Christmas without ruining the lives of hundreds of thousands of kids with procrastinating parents, we'd be able to hand over a "kudos" with a straight face.

guess everyone is wii'n it up now a days
Surely I'm not the only one who doesn't own one?
make that 2 of us...
Count me in to the exclusive group of people who don't have a wii.
I don't have one either, even though they're in stock at my local Costco now.
For a few months, I was fascinated by them, but I got over it. My 6 year old niece has one, and I'll admit the bowling game was fun, but real bowling is so much funner!
I'll still choose a powerful PC gaming machine over a console, though I'm wanting a PS3 w/backwards compatibility to replace my dusty PS2 & bring me into the age of Blu-Ray.
@Zuke
LOL real bowling is fun. I threw a ball so hard that it bounced off the gutter and went into a strike.
Nintendo is kicking some serious butt in sales. And they said that the Wii hardware was so weak compared to the PS3 and X-Box 360. Hardware is not everything. Have a balanced act of hardware and software is more important when it comes to sales. Well, they'll need all the sales they can get of their console when the DSi sales start lagging due to the iPhone/Touch gaming invasion.
Got a Wii for my son during Christmas. What a waste of money. Obviously any game that is available on multiple platforms we get for the Xbox 360. The few games we do get for the Wii are fun but we always find our way back to the 360. The Wii probably gets 5% of our game time. If you already have a 360 or PS3 I would highly recommend you avoid the Wii.
I thought not too long ago you guys said there was more than enough Wiis for everyone.
There are. Everyone has them in stock now.
Still does not have Mega Power
Sega does what Nintendon't!
Cant wait until Ghostbusters comes out... Lets see the rendering then!
AHAHAHA!!!!
Why havent you brought up iphone or apple in ur reply?
AHAHAHAHHAHA!!
..clown
It surprises me to think that Nintendo was at the end of their rope just a few years back before the Wii came out.
Yeah,
Talk about turnaround. They didn't follow the heard and go the more power route, but went simply for gameplay experience. I think in doing this move they may have dissappointed some power gamers, but they opened themselves to a massive market of customers.
Most of the people that I know that play with a Wii console never owned a gaming console before....
End of their rope? Not sure exactly what that means but even when the gamecube was suckn it up I think they were still making money hand over fist from the handheld division. Not to mention I think even though they werent moving a lot of consoles pre-wii days I dont think they were losing money on each one like the rest of the players(MS, SONY) so they werent exactly losing cash...
This is just a guess but I would imagine they could afford to flop on a few console generations and still be kept running fairly well with just handheld profits but again....just a guess.
Anyways are we still considering the Wii just a fad now days? lol
Where are Wiis in short supply anymore? Around the Pittsburgh area, all stores have had a constant stock since about Thanksgiving. You can walk in whenever and buy one.
Moved means it's not on Nintendo's hands. It doesn't mean it's a sold unit to the end user.
It does mean it is off of Nintendo's hands because it's now part of store inventory.
Thats because no one has a job in the Pittsburgh area. If the economic crisis didnt hit I'm sure those same stores would have less stock.
Steel city my ass....
@bifkus hahahahahah
In Orange County it is still hard to find them. do-able, but hard. I got mine over 2 years ago -- this is pretty unreal, like tickle-me-elmo x10.
@bifkus
Actually, Pittsburgh is below the national average for unemployment and has been throughout this entire economic downturn. It's a pretty recession resistant city. That tends to happen when your main industries are education and medicine.
Wii are not satisfied.
Not until it outsells the NES, I bet.
That will be a sad day for hardcore Nintendo gamers.
@Ignatius
What type of consumer on average do you honestly believe was buying up the NES back in the day?
Take THAT Microsoft.
All the money in the world can't help you win this generation.
Well nothing less than an act of God will get Sony 2nd place.
In terms of technology 'generation' the Wii is painful. Playing it on anything greater than an 18" TV is enough to make Jesus himself weep.
They are beating their direct competitor, Sony. Nintendo doesn't compete in the same market they do now.
Don't you mean "Jiisus"?
Companies win if they're profitable.
does anyone actually play their Wii anymore? I haven't even turned mine on in like 6 months.
I was just about to say the same thing!
You obviously bought the wrong system. Hope you have a PC/XBOX/PS3 lying around to keep you entertained.
Wii is for my little brother & sister. I'll stick with my GTX 285 thank you very much.
try tickling it.
I play with my Wii everyday. Just have to be gentle otherwise it will chap up on you.
I just use my Wii for Animal Crossing every now and again. Spring has just arrived so it's been gettting a bit more love recently. 360 gets love for exclusives. PS3 for everything else.
lol, I sold mine a year ago as its flashiness had worn off resulting in it collecting dust by my tv...
I bought one on the promise of many top-tiered Nintendo exclusives, and less for the motion controller gimmick. Needless to say, I've been very disappointed. Super Mario Galaxy is the only game that has appealed to me for that system.
I'm 30 years old and definitely not a fanboy, but there is barely a single game that I like on the Wii. I hope that this doesn't change the direction of systems next gen. I love my 360 and PS3.
Like I said above. ^
I am not a fanboi...but I love my 360 & ps3.... hahahah
Not a fanboy. I just thought I'd try to pre-empt what I see on this site everytime someone says the like something.
Well, the worst you could be is 'fanman'
As a PS. A know a lot of people with Wiis and most of them are girlfriends or moms who only have Wii Sports and WiiFit. I'd love to know the attach rate with it compared to 360 and PS3. Does anyone have that info?
The attach rate is just above the PS3 and a good chunk behind the XBOX 360.
There is a video game stock market website that does a pretty good job w/ estimation
http://www.thesimexchange.com/index.php?r=458
Also there is another website that tracks game sales
vgchartz.org or soemthing like that. I think they're related.
@Joseph
"The simExchange uses the Wisdom of Crowds to predict the upcoming best selling and top rated video games. "
Yeah, do I trust the "wisdom of the crowds" to forecast the sales of games and consoles? Um, no.
... actually, I tell a lie. I did have one go on Wii Fit back in the beginning of December. But that's one more go than my wife has ever had on it (who'd asked for it for her birthday).
thats insane.,.,all while ps3 is hurtin' like a muth. i have ps3,wii n 360.My ps3 is collecting dust, unless i play a blu ray on it....these sales numbers are sick though.,.,.,.,i still remember duck hunt for first nintendo system,,..
*shrugs* And yet my Wii is collecting dust while my relativity new 360 is seeing a hell of a lot of action due to streaming video from my desktop and Video Marketplace downloads. In this case big N should take a page out of MS's playbook. Consoles are starting to be used for more then simply gaming.
I got one 2 years ago..played it like 4 times. Waste of 300 dollars imo, especially when I have 2 360's, a gaming PC, PS3, and 6 other consoles on the shelf along with at least 10 games for each.
Ya, I used to be addicted. Now I have a life and don't know what to do with all this stuff.
Wow, you mean a bunch of internet nerds on a Gadget site with, in most cases, multiple consoles, and higher expectations then most when it comes to gaming, don't play their Wiis anymore and collect dust? Wow, hold the phone. Who'd have thunk it? Well, then I guess everyone, everywhere should think and behave the same way then, right? We don't like it, so no one should.
Here's a crazy idea. If it's sitting around collecting dust , why don't you sell it and make some money to go buy whatever "revolutionary" new FPS is coming out again this week? If they can sell 50 million new ones, maybe you can sell yours and then they won't be selling as many "new" ones to people and you can help slow their gains?
haha, true. so much wii hate on here. That evil N company goes and makes a machine where graphics are not life-like so they should be put out of business!! Relax a little bit people, or u are going to have a heart attack before u are 21
Good idea! You should definitely sell yours if it's collecting dust. I would, but i don't own one. I just keep thinking about all these hundreds of millions of Wiis ending up in landfills. I guess Wall-e can make use of them...
