Verizon Alias2 leaks out, features dynamically changing button layout
Verizon's original Alias U740 dual-hinge phone may not have rocked any worlds, but it was a clever attempt to provide the best of both a QWERTY keypad and a standard clamshell number pad in a single device -- and it sounds like the Alias 2 we're seeing leaked here improves on that concept by using dynamically-changing button labels to hammer home the mode switches. It's not clear what tech is being used to switch layouts -- there are some whispers that it's an E-Ink display, since the labels apparently remain even without power -- but given this phone's expected price point, we'll say we're expecting more along the lines of one of those segmented LCDs found in cheap universal remotes. In other words, garbage. Hopefully we'll be proven wrong at CTIA, we'll let you know. Slightly bigger pic after the break.

what if it was 2 lcd screens with 1 being a touch screen with a acceloromator etc. etc.
ah. but why would you want a virtual keyboard? i wanna type on somethin real!
It's a real virtual keyboard
It's a virtual real keyboard
ok this is new n innovative.,the real question is,,"will it kill the iphone.,???""
vzw hurtin so bad, theyll try anything at this point. Especially after their most recent failures, starting with storm. In nov of 2006 vzw ceo's rejected apple iphone project , n kicked it to the curb. So in comes att/cingular n says "we are ready to change the cell phone industry on a globall scale forever" n they did, so here we are in march of 2009. Still looking for the precious ,"iphonekiller"".!
shank that was the best shitty comment I've ever tried to understand.
Uh, no, the question is not, "Will it kill the iPhone"...
I'm tired of all these morons who think the phone industry can only handle one phone... there's never going to be just one phone on the market. And there are always going to be people who just want a dumbphone, or a dumbphone with a keyboard...
And Verizon is hurting? Really? I'd like to be hurting like them...
Betcha 20 bucks its e-ink or the like. Segmented LCD is likely to large and doesnt offer the persistence of graphic elements when there is no power.
It would be a good idea to put two LEDs under each button to simply glow different parts of it.
If this phone is real, then that's what it probably will be.
Some keys will be static (fixed), and some will be dynamic..depending on which way it's been flipped.
The 2 LCD screen idea sounds great, but I dunno...knowing electronics, and verizon for so long, I don't think that's quite what's happening here.
ok.. verizon is just signing the deal with Samsung to get the phone.. VZW has nothing to do with how the phone itself is made, its a Samsung product.
I'm gonna eat a 5 KG gram of Prunes and then take a big dump on this phone!
Since you don't have this phone, you would be required to perform the aforementioned on your own monitor.
Please do. It'll spare us from you for a while.
*Applauds*
Why are you hatin' on the Alias? I have it and it is pretty solid. I might pick up the Alias 2 next year when my contract is up for renewal, or a CrackBerry of some sort depending on business needs.
Really? You're going to go eat a 5 kilograms gram of Prunes?
I never considered the use of Prunes (apparently now a proper noun) in nonexistent, redundant metric quantities as a laxative. Bravo sir.
some keys probably can stay the same all the time while some others change
but given this phone's expected price point, we'll say we're expecting more along the lines of one of those segmented LCDs found in cheap universal remotes. In other words, garbage.
Hey, that is the phone I have been waiting for. I have the old version now and my new every two has been up without knowing what to get next. That is just fantastic news.
Although, I am kinda disappointed that the screen look just as small as the previous one.
S.H.I.T.T.Y.
That is one seriously ugly phone.
That is one fugly phone, a shame.
For some reason, I associate new verizon phones with beating a dead horse.
I had the first Alias and it certainly served it's purpose. I like the concept, but I think the old keypad served that purpose just fine. Anyway, now I've left Verizon and switched to AT&T for the iPhone. It was time to upgrade and I just wasn't happy with any of Verizon's options.
Ah reckon that's an expensive application for eInk. But snap if isn't a clever idea for an application some day. How often do you really need to refresh what's displayed on a keypad?

I have the Alias already. Actually, I got mine before it was called that. Used to be like the Samsung, ACH6467 (random numbers). It's ok. starting to show its wear for a 2yr old phone. I hate Verizon phones though. garbage and iClones. Thats why I'm probably gonna switch to ATT in 2 months. Also cause its cheaper and roll-over minutes
Shank, Verizon has 80 million subscribers and they have the lowest churn out of all three networks. How exactly is that 'hurting'?
i have the original Alias, and am super happy with it. when i was looking for a new phone, i really just wanted something thin, and this was the thinnest or 2nd thinnest phone verizon had i think. the qwerty keypad was just a bonus for me. i was scared of the dual hinge getting broken, but it has held up great, and so have all of my friend's alias.
if i were going to change anything, i would make the buttons larger and add a hi-er resolution camera. the alias 2's buttons seem almost twice as big as the original's (by using more multi-function keys), so they got that right. hopefully they make the camera better too.
i liked the hard lines of the original alias a lot more than the curves on the new one.
I agree that this model is more hideous.
To Samsung: Unlock this phone! The first time I saw it I thought GENIUS but being tied down to a carrier and Verizon at that makes me think NO!!1!1!
Genius! And where do you purpose you take this unlocked CDMA phone? What carrier shall you use it on?
Unbelievable. That is one serious contraption of a handset. There's no mistaking it for any other smartphone in the world. I don't know about the best of both worlds, but it definitely out of this world and not in a good sense, either.
Well, as long as it's cheap, there shouldn't be many complaints.
this sums it up, att has iPhone.
Verizon has this ,.,.ouch. Hurtin' dude.
Add this atrociousness to the guaranteed to fail list.
Verizon just lost 6000 or so customers by releasing this photo.
That's what u get fir rejecting the iPhone back in the 2006!
Watch this video
This may be how it works, like the panasonic p-01a (in japan)

Well that's exactly who it's aimed for, kids who like to text... how surprising.
I have the original Alias and it sucks.
The original had potential, but the screen was so terrible - hopefully VZW learned some lessons...
