Here we go: Apple's just announced that its Worldwide Developers Conference will take place June 8-12 in San Francisco. If you'll recall, last year's WWDC was where a
little gadget called the iPhone 3G made its appearance, and we'd say
chances are good we'll see
new hardware this year as well -- especially since there'd be no bigger way for
Steve Jobs to make his planned June return to the company. Also on the list of expected attendees?
Snow Leopard, possibly with a
revised interface. It should be a big one -- you know we'll be digging for all the info we can get in the leadup, so keep it locked.
Update: Jobs said he'd be out until the "end of June," of course. Still, we've got a feeling he'd want to be involved in any iPhone hardware announcements. We'll see!

OMG, OMG, OMG, OMG, OMG, OMG, OMG! I can't wait for that four-inch OLED HD display, multi-core chip, with HSDPA running on the iPhone. By then, there'll be 50,000 apps and I'm gonna download ALL of them to my 64GB iPhone 3.0 geniusphone (it's gone beyond just smart). I guess the rest of the handset companies are going to start producing electric shavers or something before they go out of business.

Why are they using a 1G (not to be confused with 3G cellular capabilities) iPhone in the promo?
maybe because the 3rd iphone (this iphone '3'g shit is about as confusing as the vista ready sticker was) will bring the look and style of the 1st one. the current one is a bit too bloated and soap-y.

It is an iPhone 3g...the volume buttons on the side are chrome, not black
As far as i know the fronts of both phones are identical but the volume buttons and silent switch are all silver on the iPhone 3G. And it says 3G in the carrier display
The 1st Gen iPhone had black volume buttons. The current iPhone has chrome volume buttons. So its safe to assume that the phone in the promo is in fact the 2nd Gen iPhone.

The iPhone 3G also has a slightly wider black bezel around the screen whereas the 1st iPhone's screen is basically flush with the chrome trim... So that phone is indeed an iPhone 3G
going by the mock up they're using (no labels on icons, label free dock) some of the folks in cupertino are partial to a jailbreak.

Not really, a hi-ref screen is more expensive and eat a lot more resource, also its break the compatibility with many programs.
Iphone lack of a decent camera, i think it is the missing feature in comparison with the rest of (smart) cellphones of the market, over 4 megapixel with autofocus/macros/flash will be fine.

I used to have a phone with a 3MP and autofocus camera, but my iPhone takes way better pictures than my old phone ever did... I don't understand why people think more mega pixels means a better picture

They won't be broken apps. The normal HVGA apps would just stretch to fill all pixels.
We're not talking about the camera here, we're talking about the screen... the iPhone screen. It can't be HVGA while evreyone has moved on...
OLED/AMOLED will be a lot more battery friendly.

Thank you! As a user of both, I hate people who can't see how great 7 (beta) and OSX are. To this day the capabilities of the new/er apple track pad amazes me. I even love vista, and have since day 1. Of course, I have hardware that can run it, but people who post on this site and don't use capable hardware drive me nuts. This is a tech/gadget blog. If you don't run gear that can run vista, shame on you and go away.

The end is near for the rest of the mobile handset companies. They're just going to roll over and die when the new iPhone/Touch devices hit the streets. People might as well start getting on a line right now with camping gear at the nearest Apple Store. The only crowds that will be in any mall will be people queueing for OLED HD iPhones and iPod Touchs running Software 3.0. A mobile revolution is about to take place.

I don't recall where I read this, but I thought Tim Cook mentioned a rough release schedule they wanted to stick to in the future for their product lines late last year. Something like desktops in Spring, iphone/ipod in summer, and laptops in fall.
I guess it matters not since they can do whatever they please.
It seems all but assured an upgraded iphone will be shown. There should an incremental upgrade for the CPU/GPU. I sure as heck hope the camera is upgraded to at least match the competition (that includes VIDEO!! -- at least it better do video, I hope, maybe, please?)

Yes you are correct... I'm not sure if it was Cook but one of the reasons Apple backed out of the next Macworld is because they were expected to release something new every year, breaking the "natural" cycles of their products, whatever that means.

It was July 11th that the iPhone 3G was released. It was announced June 9th I believe. So about a month....not to say that the new iPhone might be ready for a June release paired with the announcement.
All I'm asking for is five times more battery life and maybe a slot for a memory card.
Oh and please sell it without operator contracts so that people who are tied to company contracts can buy them too.

I just don't buy the rumors that Apple will announce another iPhone in June. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Do we really expect them to release a new iPhone every year?
I saw the iPhone 3G as a very neccessary release compared to the 1st Gen iPhone: faster, GPS, and more importantly: more accessible in terms of price. If the iPhone 3G hadn't come out at $199 I would never have gotten one. $599, $499, $399, or even $299 is too much for me to sink on a phone, but $199 is just right enough for me to justify the purchase.
At this point, though, I wouldn't really see the need to buy another iPhone. I bought the 3G knowing that Apple would release the iPhone 3.0 software, and that it would add more features without the need for a new phone. I think 3.0 will be a huge game changer in terms of the awesome apps that will result from all of the new API's being released for the SDK. I don't see a lot of press about that, but I feel that it is a much bigger deal than copy and paste or mms (seriously, those are nice, but not that important to me). There are tons of apps, but in general most of them are just sort of "neat". I think 3.0 will change that. It will bring apps that improve the overall experience and usefullness of the phone.
Way more people have the 3G than the original iPhone, so the idea that their contracts are over is moot since they will only have had it 11 months by then. A nicer screen, an incremental upgrade to the processor or memory, or an ability like video or backgrounding (which could be done on the 3G with an official software release, or right now by jailbreaking) will not lead those masses of 3G owners to upgrade to a new iPhone. I could see the need if wimax was widespread or there were some other faster data network to take advantage of.
Let's say I won't be too surprised if June goes by with no new iPhone hardware release. I'd much rather see an alltogether new piece of hardware, something I hadn't even thought. Something that would squash the tablet, netbook, and media center talk all at once.

There is no way they can not release new hardware as the iphone 3g which is already falling behind other smarth phones in terms of specs and performance cannot last another year only a app draw alone.
Think about the Toshiba TG01 power house nad powerhouses from other manufactures soon to come out.

I know that I would love to go to this, but I would rather spend $1,295 (the price per ticket) on a new MacBook instead of this. If the tickets were around $500 I would go, but about $1300 is toooooooooo much!

The yearly Apple WWDC is both a curse and a blessing for companies like Miscreantsoft, the biggest "me too" company on the planet. A blessing, for it provides a tremendous amount of free R&D for MS. A curse, since untold billions of dollars will be wasted in developing their "me too" subpar products.
