We're still filing this away in the rumor folder for now, but we'll be honest -- this is totally believable.
GigaOM has it on authority that a bona fide Skype for iPhone client will be launched as early as next week, and with CTIA kicking off on April 1st, we'd say the timing is just about ideal. Of course, we've already seen a
variety of
alternatives for
bringing Skype and other
VoIP apps to Apple's darling, but by and large, they've been supremely unimpressive. There's no word on pricing (we're crossing our fingers for free) or any other tasty tidbits, but you can bet we'll be keeping an ear to the ground for more.
Yeah, if you want to pay more for the service, loose features in the name of consumer friendliness. And have a nicer looking GUI that does less. Then yes it's a great idea...
Meh, skype on iphone = boring. ipod touch + a2dp bluetooth with headset + google voice = goodbye cell service!
Not for me atleast! Cell phones are useful in their ability to be used nearly ANYWHERE. If you're stuck on the side of the road, good luck getting a WiFi signal.
Fring works, but a dedicated skype app would be better
Now, how about a skype solution for the Blackberry that doesn't suck??
This would be so cool. If I hadn't just renewed my cell phone plan, I'd have ditched it and gotten Skype for my iPod Touch. Maybe buy a cheap pay as you go phone for traveling. On campus, there is always Wifi, which means cheaper calls.
2007 called, they want their apps back.
isnt that what was said like 2 years ago? glad to see apple is still being "honest".
Thank god. I hope it comes out soon. My Ipod Touch never ever ever seems to work with fring or Nimbuzz for phone calls. Does anyone else have the same problem? I've got the kosher apple mic/headphone set and everything... I've also tried it on several different networks to no avail. This makes me a sad mac. :-(
Seems a bit pointless.
Hmm...
I really really hope this also means good news for Android. Right now as it stands, they have a "Skype Lite" application. And by that I mean something that can log in and see your contacts, which so far is not too bad. But it doesn't use the network itself to do calls. It has you call a voice number. That's totally not the point of skype ;)
This would be cool if it also works on the Ipod touch. I currently have as cheap a cell phone as possible and a PDA, which will probably go to the Ipod touch for the next upgrade, since nobody else is making non-phone PDAs anymore. - I don't want to combine the two for various reasons. I use Skype with phone service as my primary phone. So if it works on the Ipod touch, I can take my cell AND my primary phone with me via Ipod touch/skype. I'll keep the cell for when I'm out of wifi range.
