Tata Nano photographed at official unveiling party
Make no mistake, that thing you see pictured above definitely looks no nicer than $2,000, but hey, at least it actually is just $2,000. Indian Autos Blog was on hand at the Tata Nano's official unveiling in Mumbai, and naturally, it fired off a number of images to share with those of us not able to hop a flight to see it in person. The car is set to take showrooms around the nation by storm starting this Wednesday, but for those of us stuck elsewhere on the planet just longing for a (new) beater car for under two large, the pics in the links will simply have to suffice.

I wonder what this thing will look like T-boned by a Smart car...
To come in under budget, they had to replace the airbags with barf bags.
you have to blow up the airbags yourself
that is super lame to say ..
just look at all the hard work those guys have put into it ..
Renaults Ghoshn (or whatever his name is ), also tried for a sub 2000 car, but left the race as soon as he got in it ..
Cause people, This is a real achievement,
and its not that hard to Acknowledge the fact, is it ....
Does it come with a 2 year contract?
It would not look as bad as a scooter loaded with a dozen Indians being t-boned by another vehicle.
Bodacious.
This mark the birth of hell on earth traffic congestion.
And also mark the end of Detroit's dominance.
So-long to all of California's futile efforts to save the environment...
Its a netbook... car...
No, just a glorified golf cart.
I'm afraid to sit on it, cause it might hatch!
The picture alone killed my inner child.
Most golf carts have larger wheels than this piece of #$@&.
They stole the tires off of my lawnmower.
I'd do it. Err... get it.
Put a rollbar in 'em and lets start an entry level road racing class. (heck - cheaper than most go-karts).
my god you took the words out of my mouth
1983 called, it wants its wheels back!
The potholes where I live would totally own those tiny things.
And some of them are deeper than 1/2 of the diameter of those wheels!
@Look.around.you..... for future reference, it's called 'radius.'
He was right the first time. Over half the diameter would be half the size of the wheel and thus the chassis would bottom out, the thing could probably survive a hole a quarter (half it's radius) or it's size.
He meant that "radius" could replace "half the diameter"
Like saying something takes "two quarts" of water instead of the more standard "1 kool-aid" of water
it almost resembles a golf cart more than a car.
Except it goes 60+mph!!! After about 3 minutes of constant acceleration...
40mph.
No he's right, it can go about 65MPH.
I stand corrected
Although nobody in their right mind would go over 40 in that car on India's roadways. You will be going 5 if your lucky in the major cities.
They should have made it electric, I mean all they would need to do is add a radio, doors, windows and a little bigger motor to a golf cart and it could be powered by windmills, batteries, and solar panels that Indians could build and develop. Now, they will need to compete with every other big country to get more oil and gas for a car that doesn't need it. You could get a gas powered generator to tow behind if it needed to take a long trip.
It's kind of a small car to make out in.
(dare to do it?)
Pretty sure that room for making out in this is a non-issue.
Not with you, pea-brain.
@ KAIKAI
yeah probably a problem while driving too if you have big boobies.. =>
Apparently, 95% of Americans should be able to fit into it easily, and Ratan Tata (who's quite tall himself) expressly wanted it designed so he could get into it easily.
So, to answer your question, probably yes, unless you happen to be in the 5% who are too big (in either dimension) :P
you see in India, they consider this a luxury car/eco friendly. It looks like turd on wheels to be honest, but it's not a bad effort from TATA.
Uh oh, looks like a Chinese guy has something against Indians, whats the deal man? : 0
You are wrong. Since when is this considered a luxury car?
Are you shitting me? Have you even been to India?? They have mercedes and similar brands there, so this is in no way a luxury car. it's simply affordable to a much larger market.
Dude u been to India ? or have you seen it on a map ? They got Mercs, AMGs, Beemers and whatever luxury car u wana buy. This is just so that more people can afford cars, since the prices of cars in India still remains one of the most expensive in the world.
Next time, know what you're talking. This is Engadget, without facts u will be r*ped.
@shravan - that's what the world REALLY needs: giving more people the chance to buy an internal combustion car!!
TATA could have at least made it electric....
Actually, TATA Motor's luxury brand is Jaguar. You may have heard of it?
Look at those wheels!
What's wrong?
"Tata" Nano = Ironic. This car will prevent you from getting your hands on any "tatas" if you're seen in it.
By the way, the $2,000 model will NOT get you power steering or power brakes. You're gonna feel like fucking Freddy Flinstone. Especially at low speeds, the lack of assisted steering is going to be a bitch.
besides, who would want nano tatas?
that was a rhetorical question, btw
That's American Irony not proper International Irony.
Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if this thing was fairly easy to steer/stop. Sure, steering a 4000lb car with 8-10 inch wide tires is going to suck, but this is barely 1000 pounds, and with those tiny wheels, there's not much scrub either. Same with braking, you're trying to stop 4x less weight.
It's going to be worse than a car with power steering and brakes, but not by much.
Hey @Dude..... you must be a pretty wussy little man or not old enough to drive (your avatar notwithstanding), if you need power steering help on something this size. (I am just 145lb myself, but do not see a problem with that).
1. It's 1300 lbs, not "barely" 1000. That still doesn't take into account yourself, passengers, cargo, etc.
2. A mid-size coupe like an Accord is ~3,000 lbs, not 4,000 lbs.
@roole: I'm old enough to drive. Judging by your response, my disdain for the Nano is a personal affront to you. That's too bad. Get real, it's a piece of crap.
You must be pretty ignorant of just how much a difference power steering makes. I bring this up because international markets that are accustomed to real cars aren't going to be clamoring for these like the hype is trying to lead one to believe. This is fine for India, but not even remotely acceptable for the markets they think they're going to make progress in. Power steering and brakes have been standard for a while in markets like America. So have you know...radios. More developed markets have come to expect them as such and to have to pay extra for them will beg the question, why not just by a used car if I'm going to have to spend more money to make it comparable to what is STANDARD? Throw in the eye-sore that it is and I'm not even giving it further serious consideration as a purchase.
Hey Dude: "...piece of crap?" At what price?
For comparison purposes (since you've been known to hyperventilate re. Apple), a 15" Macbook Pro costs as much. What would you rather have (I dare you to answer the question honestly, and it is not "neither"): A 15" MBP, or the Tata Nano w/o power steering?
(Fwiw, I couldn't care less about the Nano per se; it is your type of cheap-talk bullshit I find troubling with so much of the discourse in such forums. Grow up, man.).
