Nokia's hot selling
5800 XpressMusic handset just got a little bit better. Available now, the free update promises faster Internet data, built-in dictionary with text-to-speech support, an improved overall UI and eMail experience, and better in-device search. Nokia's also tweaked the cameras adding still image support to the front-facing video-call camera and a burst mode for capturing multiple snaps while holding the shutter button. There's also a new Application Update feature that identifies and downloads updates to your installed applications automatically. Giddy up.
Good for u, NOKIA
Firstly, inb4 Shank. Secondly, is this the v20 that's been out for a bit or is it the v21 they've been working on?
can't decide between this or the N97, due an upgrade soon and the N97 doesn't come out till June.
The N97 is serious business :)
No seriously.... the N97 is much higher spec and costs more.
This is a nice all around touch phone with emphasis on music play.
Can't decide? Go for LG Arena instead. No S60, yes 800x480 touchscreen with a 5mp cam, metal. But more expensive.
Or buy an iPhone and join the zombie army xD
What can i say, Nokia is really pushing it, two firmware updates under one month! Amazing!!. This shows that Nokia's heart is always with their customers. Don't be surprise if Nokia takes apple's place in the US. Coming May/June u guys are gonna see alot more surprises from Nokia, especially with the launch of their incredible service Ovi followed by the n97. Apple better beware!
LOL, yeah right! Do you know the other with totos?
Nokia your intentions are clear, if its not a touch screen nokia phone, then you guys dont care about firmware updates for all the *other phones you make
I think that's a little unfair. My N95 received an update recently even though it's a few years old now.
My N95 hasn't recieved an update since the N96 came out. Kinda frustrating. Still love the phone, hate the tech support
Guy's, more often than not it's not Nokia, it's your provider. Right now my N95 is on FW v30, but if it was up to T-Mobile UK it would still be on FW v12! They're even dangling the promise of v14...for an almost 3 year old handset.
It comes down to Nokia sticking in features that, coupled with the providers data plan, would lose them money if EVERYONE used them. I never send text messages anymore because I've always got an IM app running. I don't call internationally because I can be reached on Fring's Skype app. I can play multi-player online games and download music on the go...and T-Mobile does NOT want that. They want me to buy java games from them, not native s60 N-Gage games right from the developers. They want me to use THEIR £1 a track music service, not the 0.79p a track Nokia or Amazon services. If I was still on the stock T-Mobile firmware I'd not have access to most of these.
I say, if you're out of warranty, reflash your phone and remove the providers FW
Tes is right. I too rebranded my T-mobile N95 because they're so slow with firmware.
awesomer
its not really a (new) update!
v 20.0.012 has been out since January!
And 20.2.014 for US, which was released earlier.
So, where is update?
People!!!
I've seen Windows Vista Mobile!
http://www.intomobile.com/2009/03/29/video-of-silverlight-on-windows-mobile-in-action.html
Yep, it is an update for version 20.0.012 and not a totally new firmware. Anyways its still an awesome update.
Windows Vista Mobile?
I wonder whether it utilizes the User Account Control as well. "Windows needs your permission to dial this number"
And when you shut down the phone, it actually goes into hibernation and starts up when you accidentally touch a key, which probably happens when the phone is in your pocket.
@kalle: You do realise this is an S60 device not WinMo, right?
Mark: Sure. My reply was meant for Zunavio's post, sorry.
And what version of fw is now? I have v20.0.012...
But it's still a cheap resistive touchscreen. Useless.
Yes? And? That's kind of useful when a large part of your market uses handwriting recognition.
Sure, but the point of a touchscreen phone is to touch it, and for that resistive sucks.
Let me see, mobile X is twice as expensive but holds a non-resistive touchscreen in the contrary of the 5800. Something tells me that Nokia targets this mobile not at the high-end market for which they probably will also use better hardware. If this mobile has maybe a bit porer screen but works for the rest just fine (like most Nokia´s) its like allways a good seller. There is in the end a reason why Nokia sells 1.4 billion mobiles each year in the contrary of some small players.
It works just fine. I have used it and for me it is sensitive enough. It is really accurate since it is resistive.
Dunno, I have one and the sensitivity is excellent. Not quite as good as my mate's iPhone but close enough not to be an issue.
Lundamark.
This is not the old flabby squishy resistive touchscreen of old.
This is really smart, razor thin touch screen.
The tech involved has evolved.
Believe me, I agonized over this myself, as it was a major sticking point.
I have an ITouch and I love how accurate the touch screen is.
I wanted an Iphone if im honest, but was not willing to get the contract involved.
But in the end, I plumped for the Nokia 5800 on a non contract basis.
And I love it !!!
Its quick, responsive, easy to load with music ( the sound is Honestly better than my ITouch)
And even watching BSG S4 has been a pleasure !!
Wonderful Phone.
It does have some bugs, like the screen rotation can be sluggish, but its not life and death.
And the MMS and SMS is a breeze, I use t9 predictive text.
Only bad part is the browser, its not even close to the I touch/Iphone
But download Opera mini and its not too bad.
Lundmark, your comment is useless. Resistive touchscreens aren't, i've used many of them, and the iphone's.
Right, the Nokia nerds attacking...
Seriously, I've used a lot of touchscreen phones and PDAs, and I can't say that things have gotten much better for resistive touchscreens since my first Palm m505 I got back in 2002-2003. The same goes for the Sony Ericsson P900, P910 and P990 which I also owned until I finally realised how much they all sucked and bought an N95 instead. But capacitive touch changed it all and combined with a good UI without small buttons or pop-up menus, it's spot on.
Mark Anderson has a point that resistive is good for handwriting recognition, but since I'm not azn I don't.
I think Series 60 is actually better with plastic buttons, rather than just smacking on a bad touchscreen and a S60 UI pimped for finger use.
Lundamark you snotty dismissive little clown
Your not even open to the suggestion that the Phone's screen is Good ?
Say you've never held an Itouch/Iphone
And someone says..."Hey dude,...TOUCHSCREEN"
Did you say at the time..."Awh man, touchscreen sucks"
And subsuquently change your mind ?!
Open your mind you cretin
Im not a Nokia Nerd, in fact im more apple lover , but WILL NOT PAY AN EXTORTIONATE CONTRACT.
Jesus you apple fan boys are such technology rapists
Fucking hate you guys
Ffs, Ste! You're so touchy. It's about a fucking phone, man.
Lundamark, I apologise, Im sorry, that was OTT.
However, I see it all over the web.
Apple fans simply dismiss, without even TRYING the phone/Pc/Mp3 player , in question.
And compare it to other less favourable pieces of poo out there from the past.
Instead of trying (Like I did) the phone etc.
Seriously, The resitive/capactive argument doesnt come into play on the Nokia 5800.
Its honestly a wonderful screen, and is not like the old / recent Bad Capactive screens.
I've never even used the supplied stylus.
Thats how good it is
Right,Lundmark. So what you're saying is that the 5800's touchscreen is 'useless' even though you've never actually used it? OK.
No, I've never said I haven't used it. I have, which is why I am disappointed with the precision and sensitivity.
Alright, this review kinda nails it. http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/03/30/nokia-5800-xpressmusic-review/
"If you take a Ferrari and duct-tape a hull to the bottom of it, does it become a speedboat? No, of course it doesn't."
So true.
@Lundmark
Does it? I don't think so and neither do most of the sites who reviewed it in depth.
As for you trying out the 5800, nah. Not buying that. Sorry.
Lol, I never realised you Nokia fucks were even worse than the Apple ones. It's the same dreamteam that's ranting and bitching about the 5800 review at Engadget Mobile right now.
Just admit you were cheap and bought an inferior cellphone. It's no use bothering to convince people the 5800 is actually fun to use. Because, I mean... c'mon. It's not.
At Lundamark
This nails it !?!!
Eh, absolutly not fuckbag
this is the worst "review" ever...
hell, that goon Chris had to defend himself so many times , just showed how week this piece of poo review really was
Oh Engadget...
You really showed your pathetic true colours
im so disappointed in you
Apple fanbo-ism at its nasties
F -
what's the "new" version supposed to be? 20.0.012 that was released a few MONTHS ago had all those features.
Latest available software for Nokia 5800 XpressMusic
Version: 20.2.014
sharomyga, where you from ? USA ? The USA v20.2.014 = v20.0.012 Europe.
"eMail"?
all peeps with Network branded nokia phone has to do is look on the net for non-network branded product code for and a software to change their network branded product code.
i.e.
http://nokia.nigelcoldwell.co.uk/firmware.htm
once its done hook it up to the software updater and you will have the latest firmware with no network nonsense.
p.s. you may have to get the internet settings again as all network proprietary software and settings will be lost.
I'm glad to see a very feature rich phone. Proving me right once again, it's gonna take more than feature rich to kill the iPhone. Next, just another subpar plasticky nokia.
I hate the IPhone, I'd rather be using the nokia 1110, there are just so many flaws with the apple overhypedphone that it puts me off. My sister uses the 16gb version and it looks a bit too gimmicky, not serious enough. Will steer clear, and if you look at the E63 and E71, they are anything but plastic. The IPhone 3G has more plastic than both combined, rather cheap and nasty looking whereas the original had some sort of classy material.
And what precisely makes 5800 a subpar phone? And no more of that resistive touchscreen crap that people like Lundmark have been falsely spreading. In my opinion 5800 XpressMusic is one hell of a deal for a feature rich touchscreen phone. It simply owns.
The fact that it's cheap should make people happy, but somehow even that can be turned against it. There is nothing to complain about the manufacturing quality.
@ Lundmark: Put a glove on your apple fingers and try to use the iPhone. The resistive touchscreen works with AND without a glove on your. It's not better, it's a diferent one and btw; the iPhone rocks. ;)
this is graet phone but i still think the meizu m8 is a betar choose
o man i wonder if this fixed how the pages loaded in the browser or is it still laggy, or maybe its a hardware issue, I hope not, cuz Im really interested in this, almost threw money down on this last week but didnt...yet
