Skype for iPhone now live in US
It's finally here, and even a few minutes early. Skype for iPhone is now available in the US iTunes store, free of charge. We've heard great thing from the folks in Japan who've been fiddling with it for the last twelve hours, and so far it's sounding pretty good for us, too, with only minor hiccups. Not sure if it's a glitch, but despite what we heard earlier, we seem to be able to dial out while on 3G and not over WiFi (at least running OS 3.0 beta). Hit up the read link for quickest route to the app store page, and let us know what you think. Betcha wish you could ditch that AT&T voice plan now, huh?
Update: We're getting reports the app is crashing for jailbroken iPhones -- and possibly non-jailbroken ones as well. We just got our first denial when dialing out over 3G via a popup notification, but it only happened once and we were back to old habits one call later. We did experience a brief period where no sound was coming through, but that might have something to do with using OS 3.0 and was remedied by restarting the phone.
Update 2: So far, it looks like dialing over 3G's only working for those with OS 3.0 beta, but unfortunately all of us in that situation are now suffering from frequent crashes and loss of audio. Things seem to be going smoothly for those running the latest non-beta firmware, but the calls only work over WiFi. That said, when using the app as intended (non-beta firmware over WiFi), audio quality was surprisingly good, far better than any third party apps we've used.

I've been using Fring. Does all of this and is more stable. Nice 1st try though.
Witch jb'd phone skype work very well. Download itelliscreen from cydia do app boost backgrounder and VOIPover3G from cydia. Now you sould be able to call over 3G or WIFI and get no crash!!
Happy using it!
on ipod touch with wifi over vpn i can call skype but cant use skypeout, it says "calls over 3G networks are not supported"... is the app seeing the vpn network as 3G network? any advise appreciated, thanks!
Ya, Have the same problem...
Ongoing research on why Skype crashes on jailbroken iPhones:
http://thebigboss.org/2009/03/30/new-skype-app-having-problems-on-jailbroken-phones/
Jay Freeman (saurik) has responded stating that he is aware of this problem and will be working on a fix in the near future for the Mobile Substrate
Also, as stated in my article, you can use Skype over 3g or edge on a jailbroken phone. I briefly tested it on T-mobile’s EDGE network (using voipover3g) and for the 30 seconds that it lasted, there was no noticable lag and quality was great
Looks like Saurik and Clippy have both updated their software...giving it a shot now..
Looks like we are good to go...mobileSubstrate patch from Saurik has fixed the random crashing..and it looks like the Clippy update has fixed the sign-in issue...pretty dang fast...much deserved credit to the developers
For all users with issues with SKYPE w/ jailbroken phones.
Fire up CYDIA, let it refresh the sources, then it should show and update available for MOBILESUBSTRATE.
Update this, restart your device, then all should be solved.
just wanted to tell you, that T-Mobile in Germany doesn´t allow VoIP on the I-Phone.

Impressed with audio quality so far - but would've loved to have been able to use it with a 3G connection - limiting me to wireless hotspots means i'm just more tempted to use my Sammy NC10 and the webcam with mic to make calls, but who knows, maybe in the future?
Typically smooth intergration though - easy to navigate and does exactly what you'd expect.
Well wha'da you know, even my SkypeIn numbers work, allowing me to receive calls from all my global numbers, here in the UK... that's one up on my Skype 3G Phone, AND the S60 app! Now if only it worked when the phone was in standby... :@
I'm jailbroken, and yes, lots of crashing out... but that aside, great app! lol
Mobile substrate updated... less crashing! Happy days! :o)
Great! I got it working on my ipod touch with a small microphone and the speaker on.
It does not work with backgrounder! :(
Yep, I'm pretty sure backgrounder doesn't work due to MobileSubstrate being disabled during Skype.
That's my theory anyway.
So I can use my $2.95 Skype Out account on this? Nothing is needed additional?
also live in the UK!! working great!
I'm not sure if anyone else has posted this but I tested that "create an account" function from the skype app. If you do that, it defaults your account to a Japanese account, not a US based account. Just a good FYI for everyone.
Same for me except mine goes to Taiwanese site. I'm Asian but I don't read/speak Chinese!!
Tried it on IPod Touch running 2.1.1 . So far it is unusable . Will attempt to upgrade the firmware and see what happens .
does anyone know how i can have skype running in the background on the iphone 3g so when i go back to home screen it doesnt close out of app?
You can't have any applications running in the background aside from Apple ones. meaning that skype has to be running ALL THE TIME for you to be able to receive calls or messages.
Actually, that's the biggest problem with it. Unless the program is open and on top, there's no way of receiving calls... Of course, this'll change with push notifications, but it's still another step to get the call going.
Nope, sorry it won't work.
Even with a JB iphone with backgrounder enabled, it won't run in the background, it jsut closes up.
Updated mobile subtrate using cydia now and it works fine for jailbroken 1st gen iPhone.
This update is available now, so go try it.

In my NON JAILBROKEN (just to make it clear :P) iPhone, whenever I tap on a specific contact (I suppose he's using it from a PC) the app crashes, but I tested it with another friend (online on a windows mobile phone) and I was able to chat. Haven't tested calls yet because I have no available wifi at the moment (going to lunch in a few minutes, so should test that then).
Anyone else had this crazy crash thing?
Hi,
I think I am having the same issue.
So weird that I am able to use Skype via iphone with all of my contacts except two of them. When I tap on those specific contacts the app crashes. I tried removing them from my list and then I put them back on, but the problem persists. I have also deleted and reinstalled skype but nothing seems to work.
Were you able to figure it out? We're on our own on this one, since skype doesn't have any tech support, not even a troubleshooting list!
My best,
Krys
I can't believe how much attention these iPhone news are getting. I know that it's a popular phone, and a lot of people use it, but still... Skype app after this long???
I've had a Skype app on my Touch Diamond since the phone came out, AND I can dial over 3G!
(I'm not an Apple hater. I use a Macbook and an iPod Touch. Just to be clear)
Can't get it to work :S as soon as I try type in my user name it crashes. Restarted the phone and everything.
It doesn't like my jailbroken phone perhaps? Who knows, I may try reinstalling it and see if that helps.
saurik released an update for MobileSubstrate and he says there's compatibility issues with Skype, which causes the crashing, so he temporarily disabled MS in Skype (no WinterBoard themes temporarily in Skype for example).
Hmmmm, I see now.
So since MobileSubstrate is temporarily disabled, is that why Backgrounder won't work currently work with skype?
Seems like a plausible reason....
Work fine!
MEH! Where are the Sling and SiriusXM Apps? I sense an Apple Cock block coming since these apps could "potentially compete with current and future Apple offerings" (i.e. Apple TV and iTune store). Watch...
PS Well Sling and SXM, there is always Android. Just sayin...
I'm pretty sure sling player is on the way,
and SiriusXM just announces a SiriusXM app due out in the summer but its totally bullshit since NiceMacLLC had an app ready to go and the geniuses at SiriusXM killed it.
no doubt their player will not be as good as Starplayr could have been....
***CANADIAN SKYPE DOWNLOAD UPDATE***
SKYPE App download and installed without a hitch. Works Flawlessly!! (But in Wifi mode only - for now)
For Canadians: Grab it while you can or risk being shut OUT!!
Steps: Via - Ryan.go.habs THANKS!
1) Launch iTunes Change to US STORE (@bottom)
2) Create NEW account. Enter any info and SELECT "NONE" for payment
3) Enter any address but make sure ZIP CODE MATCHES CITY
4) Then re-login after you confirm account via email and download skype in iTunes, and re-sync,
Error MSG appears when you attempt to make a call via 3G, WiFi only for now, until hack becomes available
or 3.0 goes public.
Very unstable. Crashes on some people every time :( And on others it works... I made a call and other person wasn't able to use webcam for some reason... Does this app support incoming video?
still a great program though.
just waiting for video with new iphone and 3.0
Thank you to those who told me howto download, even if in canada.. What a looser deal for us canucks?! doesn't even make sense to have a usa/can store just north america.... I have to say after testing this ALOT its almost useless, I can make a call but then it dies randomly or just audio gets messed up. I can't mute sometimes, or use dialer inside call... And sometimes for no reason I goto some other part of app and dies. THIS should have been called a alpha release and frankly (for now) should not be used in production enviroment or where you need your skype/voip working 24/7. I hope skype gets off their fudd and get things working properly, especially for those who want it over 3g networks..... and while they're at it get sms working so can get that on the cheap
Managed to do a download form the US store, but iTunes won;t install it on my iPhone, saying the computer isn't authorized.
I want to use this on my 1st gen. iPod touch.
I don't need this application i got a" FRING" is a better also works with ipod, 2 months ago that I'm using is not new to me this "skipe."
I'm tired of all this fanboy shit!!!
Come on people.. everytime the other manufacturer comes out with something, the "others" complain saying "I can't believe your being a beta tester"
Thats what you all are right now.. every new program has problems. Give it time.
I think people are expecting this appl to replace the calling. I think it's just meant for people with friends/family overseas. Or if you travel overseas and are at a hotspot to call a few people back home. For those people, this app is great! And now I'm starting to think I want my Storm to have Wi-Fi!!!
Other than that.. this really isn't going to be a great appl to make/receive calls with.
I'm not going to tell people my skype info and say, during 7PM -9PM during the week call me on my skype number, and any other time call me on my cell. It's a pain.
I'm sure Apple spoke with ATT about the Wi-Fi calling and they agreed on something.
The only thing I don't like about Skype is it's owned by the devil! Ebay/Paypal.. who loves to double dips on my ebay sales!
So you whiners are filling up four pages of boo-hoo because Skype WON'T WORK ON YOUR JAILBROKEN PHONE?
Well, guess what, IT SHOULDN'T. They clearly state that the software isn't supported on modified iphones. Why would you think that Skype would want to take on that burden? They'd likely get a load of flak from Apple too, if they did.
The way to get 3G calling and backgrounding to work reliably is to pressure AT&T and Apple until they give in and make both available in a controlled development environment. Complain to them, not Skype!
Ah ha ha ha ha ha....
Oh you iPhone users amuse me.
Blonds of the tech world really.
My Nokia N95 has been running Skype perfectly, in the background, all day, without crashing FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS!
...he he he...just ROFL...
