Sony's wraparound W Series Walkman on sale and in pink
Not much has been said of Sony's unique W Series Walkman since its unveiling at CES this year, but now the player is on sale and available in a vivacious pink hue for all the ladies in attendance. Or fashion-forward gentlemen, whichever. At any rate, said player -- which is more formally known as the NWZ-W202 -- is expected to start shipping out as early as tomorrow, bringing with it 2GB of inbuilt storage space, support for MP3, AAC and WMA files, a battery good for a dozen hours and a three minute "quick charge" feature that provides up to 90 minutes of playback. Catch it right now in black or the aforementioned pink for $69.99.

"Fashion forward Gentlemen" has this phrase been authorised by our friends in the gay community? I don't think so.

Hey Dave, no need to be angry, clearly mentioning gay people has caused you some inner termoil and hence the needlessly agressive outburst (reported). I don't think you should express these obvious doubts about your sexuality in a public forum. Save it for your shrink. Don't Feed the Troll the sign said, but I can't resist sometimes. P.s. Notice all your posts are critisms of the first post or exclaiming delight at being the first post. Another one for the shrink I think ;)

saw these in the Sony shop on Saturday, there's loads of colours, not just pink and black; green, yellow and blue were the other ones.

any engadget female readers who actually like this color?
Kelmon @ Mar 30th 2009 6:52AM
Not sure about Engadget readers but I definitely know a few ladies who would buy the pink version because they just love the colour for reasons unknown. However, I suspect that the colour is probably more appealing to a younger audience, specifically pre-teen girls for whom pink seems to be an obsession.

I wish I could say my girlfriend would not squeal with ear-bursting frequency and snatch these off the shelf like they were the last bottle of antidote on the supervillain's shelf.

At least there are no proprietary earbuds to worry about.
youngstunna @ Mar 30th 2009 7:44AM
that and no ATRAC support anymore?
not even a new application that is the only way to transfer the music?
what the hell sony. you've let me down this time.

-because Sony hasn't made a big enough push into "Family Dollar" stores.

Greetings customer,
Another Walkman with embedded, non-removable battery and storage.
Please enjoy your 300-500 battery charge cycles and undetermined write-life of the flash memory. Toss & upgrade at your earliest convenience to our forthcoming 8GB version, also with non-removable battery and storage.
We hope you enjoy shuffling on our unique device.
Regards,
Sony Corp

How many PMPs have a removable battery (the 4th G iPod does not count)? I mean, we are talking about a pretty cheap, arguably sytlish mp3 player. Considering it is 2 GB, and is one solid unit, I think it is a pretty good deal.

This new Walkman will fail, and everyone will forget about it.
Then next year, Apple will rip off the design and call it the new ipod Shuffle.
:-)
Harry @ Mar 30th 2009 2:53PM
I had the same idea... this is what the new iPod Shuffle should've been, IMO, instead of the halfway solution that they produced instead. This form factor paired with their voiceover interface makes more sense to me than their gumstick unit with proprietary headphones.

hideous
kwanbis @ Mar 30th 2009 1:39PM
This is why Apple is kicking everybody's but with the iPod.
This thing is ugly. It a has a name nobody would remember (NWZ-W202).
I really like Sony, but they just don't get it.
It is like if they are tying to make as much gadgets as possible, in hopes they would hit a one people like, instead of concentrating on lets say, about no more than 5 models.
Terrible.
