Samsung Instinct S30 now official, coming to Sprint on April 19th
That didn't take long. After Samsung showed off its Instinct S30 (a.k.a. Instinct Mini) last night with some official imagery -- and less than an hour after we spotted it in the wild at CTIA -- Sprint's gone ahead and made it official with a press release. The carrier-exclusive touchscreen phone features a 2.0 megapixel camera, GPS, Bluetooth 2.0, and virtual QWERTY keypad, along with Opera Mini 4.2, Sprint TV, and Sprint Music Store. It's also got a Speech to Action function for controlling the phone by voice and alllegedly more access to the core Java API for development. Color options include Cobalt Metal or Touch of Copper. Launch date is April 19th, which is exactly what we saw in that leaked Sprint playbook, and price is $129.99 with a two-year contract.

does anyone really honestly care?
About your post? Not particularly.
I think not.

"does anyone really honestly care?"
Yeah, some of us do, dick.
I agree I dont care. Bring on the alm Pre!
Just us who have a theory that touchscreen phones may start to favour smaller form factors for one handed use.
Not everyone wants to drop what they're doing to send a text or check their mail.
Yes. People do actually care. Sprint has the most reliable network. Samsung makes the best quality phones. This phone is going to be awesome. Sprint + Samsung = Best Mobile Experience.
"Sprint + Palm Pre = Best Mobile Experience"
fix'd
You can't say that yet.
The Pre might be a horrible disaster.
Maybe the S30 will be the phone to save Sprint.
The palm pre will be successful in it's own right.
samsung makes the shittiest phones you mean
Too bad it's a dumbphone that no one will make apps for, and can't sync contacts or indeed ANYTHING with my PC via a connection or the cloud. It's typical telco bullshit, selling stupid people on a stupid phone.
Amazing...what about plans? Will you have to have a Simply Everything Plan like with the original Instinct?
I hope not....
Also how large is this phone? I mean relative to the iPhone? Bigger or smaller?
And as a Sprint customer I say that's another great step forward for the company.
Better phones, Better customer service, and Better prices. Eventually the mainstream will catch on.
"Better phones, Better customer service, and Better prices."
Agreed. I think Sprint is going to make a big comeback in the following years. When the iPhone hype dies, people will see the real AT&T. People are already starting to notice Verizon is a money pit. T-Mobile has the shittiest network, every time I think of T-Mobile, I have feelings of ghettoness.
Everytime I think of T-Mobile I think of black guys texting on their sidekick to meet up at the local Burger King (no I'm not racist, I've just played Midnight Club recently hah).
Honestly, I don't understand people's bitching about tmobile. Any place I've used it, it's been fine. Sure Tmobile has a bit more roaming coverage in rural areas, but in larger metro areas (read over 500k people) its been good, if not excellent. Sprint, on the other hand, seems to be unable to deliver text messages or deliver passable call quality in dense metropolitan areas. Every network has its own problems really, so its not worth the time to complain about other networks.
I'm just waiting for anything that I can move my SERO plan to that doesn't suck.
What the ,.!!!!!! Screen is much smaller than the regular instinct,.LOL fail!!!!!!!what the ehcj is samsung thinking,,,,,,???
The screen seems to be close to the same size. Maybe a little bit smaller. I'm sorry you are scared to say fuck. Is your mom watching you?
Yeah! How dare they make the Instinct *MINI* have a smaller screen!? That's ludicrous! (Grabbing a pitchfork and torch)
Are you being serious? I can't tell. If you are then I'll let you know you're wrong. This device has the same screen size as the original Instinct. Better luck next time. Try again.
"and alllegedly more access to the core Java API for development"
I remember the whole bullshit "MIDP Compliant" fiasco with the regular Instinct when it first appeared and Sprint refused to allow access to the onscreen keyboard to developers (making it not MIDP compliant!), and if you asked about it on the Sprint forums, your post got deleted nice and quick :) My experience with Sprint customer service back then was nothing short of a nightmare.
I'd rate their network as above average but I hope their customer service has improved since then.
The customer service has improved vastly over the preceding months. Anybody who was being a bitch to customer service, has now been removed from the network. =]
Per sprint manager have to get $99 plan for 2 years,
I'd be surprised if you can't get the limited minute 'everything data' plans, just like the current Instinct.
I'm annoyed with that. I have nothing against the SEP plan, but what's wrong with the 450 SEP?
You absolutely can put a 900 or 450 minute everything plan on an Instinct, it just needs to have the data pack.
I was told you just have to have unlimited data and messages to get the Instinct.
nice
While I don't think I'll pick this one up, as I currently have the HTC Touch Pro and will be getting the Pre, it's really good see Sprint making better choices not only with their actual line of devices but with smart, little moves like adding Opera Mini as the browser.
$129.00 isn't a bad price point at all. I doubt this will require the Simply Everything plan like the original Instinct. I think it'll follow the same plan structure the Palm Pre will release on with plans starting at $69.00/month.
As for the Sprint image and the perception that they're terrible, I'm not sure how long that will take to diminish, if ever at all. It's too bad because Sprint really does have the best (fastest) data speeds than all other carriers. Coverage is just as good, if not better, than the other three major carriers. Of course, your milage will vary depending on your location but that's the case with all carriers.
I'm not trying to cause a fight but seriously, Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile just aren't superior to Sprint. The only thing AT&T has over Sprint is the iPhone, which is a deal big but being that I take my data speeds and coverage seriously, I'm happy Sprint is around. PALM PRE FTW!! I'm so excited!
Sprint NEVER required the Simply Everything plan for the Instinct, just an everything plan starting at *gasp* the $69.99 price you listed.
Blegh. I'm on my second Instinct now, and it's not that great of a phone. Terrible app support, spotty touchscreen, and just overall, the phone isn't that great.
I'm just waiting till my upgrade so I can get an htc with an actual keypad.
I'm with you! I liked the Instinct for about a month, but I can't wait to upgrade now. I'm thinking about a Touch Pro, and don't think I'll wait until I'm eligible for an upgrade.
I like when they release phones like this. Instinct $129, iPhone as low as $99.
Another thing, release of this phone will boost iPhone sales. Agree??think about it. What phone has a better reputation, quality. Appeal, sexiness , innovation. ? I hope it has succes though.
Please, out of compassion for everyone here, shut the fuck up. No, an acronym wouldn't be blunt enough.
I got my M800 back in November for my birthday. It was nice to get Opera Mini to start working on it, and now it comes default on this phone? Bah. Opera still has a couple quirks in it, so hopefully they'll be software upgrade for those of us with the original Instinct.
looks nothing special
Why do Samsung always give Sprint the terrible same old phones but the other companies have way better Samsung smartphones not this dumb UI.
That was Sprint's idea to co-develop a UI instead of using Samsung TouchWiz. Believing they were gods and could create something great, they ended up with that boring POS.
I don't care how good this phone is, I will never get one just because of the stupid commercial.
Lonely chick: "I love your phone!"
Man of ambiguous sexual orientation: "INSTINCT!"
@Spence
Absolutely right...those of us who got in on SERO when it was still around are due for an upgrade...I was hoping Sprint would allow the Pre to get activated on a SERO plan, but they wont even allow the original Instinct, and I cant imagine they'll change their minds regarding its successor. Anyone know any different?
I don't get why people care about this phone.
Samsung release a crappy upgraded version of their "exclusive" phone that is still inferior to their own Omnia.
The upgraded version still has a 2 MP camera? What did Samsing actually do to update this phone other than make it more round?
I'm scratching my head, asking the same question. It sounds like they scrapped the crap browser in place of Opera mini and made edges rounder.
Time will tell.
I surprised anyone, even the people who are obviously haters, are obsessed with another touch screen only phone. Buttons are WAAAAAYYYY faster people.
@Spence and Bruce
I also have a SERO plan and it is driving me crazy that all these phones require plans with a minimum charge of $69+ per month.. i.e PRE and this new instinct... probably. I am currently using a Palm Treo 755p and want an upgrade. Any suggestions to pair with my SERO plan that would also have a qwerty keyboard?
Just wondering. If I were to buy a HTC Touch Pro would they allow it on a SERO plan? Mine is $30 for 500 min, unlimited nights & weekends, nights at 7pm, unlimited sprint to sprint, unlimited web and unlimited texts. How can anyone consider changing this plan!?!?!?!
Does this mean that Pandora will work correctly on this thing?!
I hadn't heard about that limitation with the Sero plan (i too have the $30 a month deal... wouldn't leave it for a phone) not to mention i have two lines one 500 the other 1200 min, unlimited everything... paying less than $50 a month total(because of a few early mishaps :)
anyway check out howardforums they have a section on SERO that might be able to help you out and answer those questions,
i think if they don't allow the upgrade on the PRE and it's too expensive outright i might check out HTC Touch Pro2 (friend has touch pro and it's nice). with a keyboard.
Tradepost on sprintusers forum. ;)
