Given that
REDFLY can't sell its
Mobile Companion for free-after-rebate, we're not at all shocked by this move. If you'll remember, we actually heard that Celio was looking to
dabble in software back at CES, and now the company has selected CTIA to showcase its REDFLY Mobile Viewer. Available as a free download today in beta form, the Windows-only program essentially turns any PC into a Mobile Companion by blowing up smartphone applications on a bigger screen. The software works with all current REDFLY-compatible handsets, and it gives users the ability to surf their WinMo desktop at 800 x 480, 800 x 600, 1,024 x 600 or 1,024 x 768 resolution. We're struggling to see how Celio is going to monetize this, but who knows, maybe it's just in it for the fame.
Trouble monetizing? Try building the thing for a mobile platform people care about (i.e. iPhone and Android).
Dude, shut up and enjoy your damn fat apps.
where can i find the link to the free beta
got it!
dont waste your time, mymobile for the win! :)
and yeah...i dont think the iphone or droid can do this....HAHAHAHAHA!! :)

I've been playing around with the Redfly software with my Tilt for the past hour (boring lecture), and I can honestly say I prefer it to mymobiler, which I've used to a good extent previously. It's a much quicker over usb - no noticeable lag, and the automatic screen expansion beats mymobiler's enlargement by a mile. I'd have to say so far so good.
doesn't work with windows mobile 6.5 - had to do a hard reset.
This is actually looks like a decent option for anyone in a contract that does not allow tethering (so like 99.9% of smartphone users). Maybe Celio wants to get all the WinMo users hooked on using a big screen and then charge $$ for upgrades.
Whats all the hoopla about. Just becayuse they release the software in BETA for FREE doesnt mean the released product will be free down the road.
BTW, I have a REDFLY, it is a great device, for those that understand what it really is and are not expecting it to be a Netbook. The Instant On Feature, and as someone said if you cant tether, it is great
...except it is horrendously overpriced. When one can buy a netbook of the same size as the REDFLY for about the same price ($180-$220, EeePC 701 4G) then the REDFLY makes little sense.
If one has a Windows Mobile smartphone, they can make their own REDFLY using an EeePC 701 and Microsoft's free Remote Display powertoy for the same price as a REDFLY that can act as a notebook on its own. My EeePC 701 4G has WinXP installed and customized and boots up completely within 30 seconds. If I were to optimize it for smartphone display, I could shave 10 secs off boot time.
I've contacted Celio Corp repeatedly about dropping their price for the REDFLY to $99. They always responded with "sales are doing great".... as they dropped the price from $499, to $399, to $199.
The Redfly site is soooo Windows. Total PITA. When you try to find more information on the Mobile Browser they keep shoving their Mobile Companion hardware in your face with video tours, etc.
Redfly: don't count on putting the iPhone out of business any day soon with your mediocre site.
Hrm. I've tried it, and I still think it's pointless.
*shrug* I guess there might be someone out there who thinks this is useful, but sadly, it's not me.
Also, it broke TouchFLO for a while on my Touch Pro, so who can say!
I would be willing to try the Redfly for about £60 but only if they paid me in £20 notes and didn't give me any small change...
