Dell's 21.5-inch SX2210 monitor now available to order

In Dell's usual roundabout way of launching non-luxury products, this new SX2210 monitor first appeared on the company's website with little fanfare last month, but it looks like it's now actually available to order, and for the very reasonable of price of $279 (before the inevitable flood of discounts). That'll get you 21.5 inches of screen real estate, along with a full 1920 x 1080 resolution, a fast 2-millisecond grey-to-grey response time, a 50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, both HDMI and DVI ports, four USB 2.0 ports, and even a built-in 2 megapixel webcam that supports facial recognition in Windows Vista. Sold? Then hit up the link below to get your order in.

I was wondering about this display when the new studio xps came out...
looks like a pretty good looking monitor and deal-
How big is the average monitor amongst engadget readers? I'd imagine everyone here has too much junk to make do with a mere 21 inches.

thanks for the blogspam michael - dont worry, i clicked your ads about 300 times, you will get an abuse letter from google tonight.
Anyone know if the webcam with cooperate with OS X?
It should. I have 2, 20 inch Dell SWF2008s & the web cams work in OSX no problem. By the way Dell monitors have best price/performance ratio of any monitor out there. I'm really tempted to get a few of these. Mine are 2 years old already sheesh!
Yeah, I would love to have this with my macbook pro.
It always makes me laugh when Apple fanboys claim Apple hardware is the best and the premium is worth paying while the first thing they do is get a Dell monitor because it's cheaper.
yep, Apple hardware is the best.. but their displays are waaay to expensive for most mere mortals.. including most apple fans
This might be a viable option for my Macbook Pro too... since the current 24" Monitors cannot be connected to older Macbook Pro's in anyway... :\
Wish it was a bit bigger though! Any plans for others in this line?
@Proud Japanese
I will happily feed your silly troll comment because I'm as sick of anti-Apple people assuming Apple fanboy-ism as I am of Apple fanboys claiming that Apple can do no wrong. How do you assume Adam is an Apple fanboy? Because he owns a Mac? By your logic – assuming you're a Windows user – you're automatically a Windows fanboy and support Microsoft/Dell/et al to the grave.
I know plenty of Mac users (myself included) who use Macs because we love the software. Paying a premium for everything else in life just for the sake of it, as you're suggesting, is not a trait of most Mac users I know...and I know plenty from all walks of life, pay scales and professions. Most Mac users, you'll be amazed to hear, actually do use Microsoft keyboards, Microsoft mice, Dell Monitors, etc. etc.
Get out of your little single minded hole and, more importantly, get over your elitist "anti-elitist" self. Comments like yours just expose how the "anti-Apple" fanboys are equally the fool.
Facial recognition huh? That is pretty cool.... I'm still not going to pay that much for a monitor though.
You mean you're cheap? $279? That's a pretty low price there my friend for what you get. I don't know what you're smoking.
I've got a 22" Acer X223w for $169. Sure you get more with the Dell (except for screen size), but for almost half the price, I'll go with the Acer.
@Mark: But your Acer is a 1680x1050 diplay, and this is a 1920x1080, and has USB ports and a camera, and better specs. It's not a bad price for what you're getting, and the Acer by comparison doesn't really strike me as a deal, with its significantly lower specs.
Also your acer probably looks like ass compared to this dell....I am really impressed at how clean this design looks.
yea stop bein' cheap ass....Acer is to Chevy as Dell is to Mercedes....fork up the dough for some real goodies ... not you're NASCAR variety.
wow kestes, i didn't know u could swear so much AND make an anology to car companies. congratz
ill take 2 plz
it's a TN panel, so that pricing isn't really that great.
What do you mean by TN?
Stop being so pedantic! Oh man, I am full of it today.
Yea this would be awesome if it was an IPS/IPA panel.

the Dell 2408WFP's are P-MVA and are pretty good, I would be very happy to have one at home. Whilst in theory S-IPS are better, some have too much overdrive and are spoiled - NEC seem to do this on some models much more than others - trying to match the response times of TN's I guess. My personal NEC 20WGX2pro is a good model, looks better than my work's 2408WFP as you can tweak it well to stop the stupidity-marketing modes, others aren't so lucky.
Twisted Nematic, wiki it:

Do you know of any good sites or resources that clearly (read: simply) explains the difference between the different LCD panel types, and pros/cons of each?
It's a TN panel, so I'm definitely not buying it :)
>> "It's a TN panel, so I'm definitely not buying it :) "
So what kind of non-TN panel do you have now? I'm always looking for suggestions...
People will pay for TN so Dell caved on it, but if you look on their Outlet or eBay you can find a lot of their great old IPS/MVA displays, Dell still uses IPS for the 30" I think
Its not for designers. Its for casual computing, gaming, browsing and movie watching. TN are ok for those things. Its not a pro monitor but it look like a freaking good TN.
TN panels usually have a faster response time than IPS or PVAs.

My Dell 2209WA CRUSHES this for display quality, but its like 3x as thick, not 1080P, and has an older styling elements. So worth it.
the 2209WA is an e-ips panel with 5ms gtg, honestly better while gaming than my overdriven TN panel samsung 223bw with 2ms which has overdrive garbage artifacts
you can get it for $216 like I did.

Cool Studio One stand.
Ok guys thanks 4 the info, but im getting nox....... plz i need info from Samsung about the P3... price, date, when will be available for Preorder in US
We got 2x22" for the whole office 5 months ago, makes me wish these were out then. Awesome price.
I'm tired of all this 16:9 from Dell.
What do you prefer, the standard 4:3? Have you tried using the 16:9's in portrait mode for a 9:16 aspect? That might help if you need longer top to bottom displays for your work.
Or 3 of them across; 27:16 FTW!
I prefer like 16:10, the monitor wide screen aspect ratio.
More TN garbage.
fucking stupid how they come out with every fucking measurement possible, next week there introduce a 21.7 inch screen, then the next week after that a 21.8. There response will be like "We just want to have every possible option for people when they pick the perfect monitor. Bullshit, what da hell is a half inch, just go up to the 22. jesus, but i know there are fans of the weird sizes
I don't get it either. Releasing a 21.5" is really strange/pointless considering that 20", 22", 23", and 24" are all very common sizes. At this point, I think they're just messing with you, man!
my 20.137805" dell is sweet!
I have never seen someone get so upset before about the sizing of a LCD computer monitor...
Maybe you need to take a break from this stuff.
I don't really care about the exact size of the panel, I just wish it were easier to match the DPI/dot pitch of different monitors for a multi display setup.
This would be considerably higher DPI than my 1440x900 19" monitor.
@chispito
If matching the size, DPI, or Res is that important to you. Buy two of the exact same monitor. Pretty much guarantees they are gonna match.
Dayumm, I've been looking for a monitor and it looks like this is it! Buying now, I just wish there was a cable input for some TV
If u can get a HD box then u can use it as a tv as well..
Anyone know if there's a flat screen comparable to a crt in terms of color? I'm an artist and most of my artist friends say you need a crt for print colors. I don't know the differences technically but I have a small lcd next to my crt and I'd like to just get two 22'' flats.
safe route= apple monitors. never have to worry about color, but lacks in connections/features.
dell(WFP series ONLY)= very useable for design work, not too tough to calibrate
samsung 245T- damn near perfect panel, but a BEEYACH to calibrate on a mac.
CRT- doesn't matter anymore, obsolete. your friend is probably a classic designer, just talking about the old lcd cant produce accurate color argument. that was an issue years ago, no one cares now.
point is, go cheap, and you will suffer. get 2 samsung screens with a .25/26 dot pitch and double up. read reviews thoroughly. or else, i have a 50lb crt monitor that im sending to your address right now pal
