Intel turns Moblin over to the Linux Foundation
If you love something, set it free -- and if it truly loves you back, it will return as the market's dominant MID and netbook OS. We're pretty certain that's what our mom said to us when we were kids -- it's a fairly hazy memory -- and it sounds like Intel's heeding that advice with Moblin, turning over "stewardship" of the fledgling OS to the Linux Foundation. It's an interesting move that seems to be more about politics more than anything else -- Intel still employs all the lead developers, so it'll basically be in charge of things, but companies that want to use Moblin can do so secure in the knowledge that it's formally controlled by a neutral body. Very clever. So -- now that that's out of the way, can everyone get back to work on that insane concept MID we've been drooling over for two years? Thanks.

So next year we will choose between this and Windows 7 on our netbooks?
Yup. Looking forward to it.
No. Moblin is one of linux that make to boot and run really fast. it optimum for atom netbook.
But there is option like ubuntu, xandros, fedora ETC.
There is also space for ARM like OMAP AND Nvidia Tegra so Android and Windows ce's change isn't null ... but still too low..
I'm sure a little grumbling from Psychosoft probably had something to do with the decision too.
It's true; Microsoft secretly control everything in the universe. I hear it was Microsoft who persuaded God to kick mankind out of the Garden of Eden. Remember, it was because Eve ate an apple...
Looks like Intel is gunning for Microsoft, at least on netbook/MID. Or just hedging their bets.
Who will win?
Who do you want to win?
Is it time for Microsoft to create a "universal" Windows (x86/x64, Power, ARM, etc...)?
1) MS
2) Not MS
3) No
I would love to see linux on all devices, it just makes sense, but whilst Aero exists the uninformed buyer is going to go for Windows.
If by uninformed you mean "just wants to get stuff done and doesn't want to waste time troubleshooting his wifi setup" then I agree with you.
If your on this blog, your most likely not uniformed.
Im talking about my Grandma, who just bought her first PC.
Having been out of the game completely all her life, she had no prior expectations.
I showed her Vista, XP, KDE, Gnome, Xubuntu and Mac OSX
She picked vista, not because she gives a shit about WiFi (or knows what it is), just because she thought it looked nice.
As a Mac, Linux and Windows user, i can say that i find navigating Mac easiest, then Ubuntu, then Windows.
Theres not much in it, thats just my opinion.
I could give a whole review, but i think ive already taken up to much of your time.
@Oli D
You're not supposed to give her a choice! Grandmas are too old and senile to pick out a good OS by themselves!
She would probably just get pudding on the computer anyway. Grandmas, who needs 'em?
@Mr. Toyota
Yeah, you're probably right. No computer deserves the "Tapioca Treatment"
@bill has an impaction
I see what you did with my name thingy
No multi touch, no glossy square with round edges Facebook icon? ok it sucks!
Future netbooks will need a JavaScript coprocessor if they want half a chance at rendering Web 3.0 bloat. intel better get working on that
Thats a good idea...
hmmm..... I never thought of that.... +1
This might be a stupid question but is it ONLY limited to netbooks or can normal laptops run it no problem? I really need an Instant On OS for my laptop. Any suggestions?
The instant on feature is a hardware and software solution, I believe. It may boot quickly on your notebook but it won't be instant.
Somewhat off topic but I was wondering what is this hold that Microsoft has on computer makers?
Ugh, just to clarify the misinformed comments here, this is primarily aimed at MIDs. Not netbooks.
(And Windows doesn't run on ARM, so stands no chance on MIDs at this time).
the 5 sec boots are with fast ssds .. 15 sec is more realistic on hdds
currently moblin requires intel graphics and also i686 + sse3 support in your processor (meaning my sempron 3100+ might or might not run it since it only has sse2 ... heh and lacks intel graphics)
