iPhone OS 3.0 beta 2 gets the jailbreak treatment
The jailbreakers have managed to keep their speed record intact. Just one day after Apple releases an update to the iPhone OS 3.0 beta, QuickPwn updates its wares to support the new firmware. According to the related writeup, it should work with all iPhone / iPod touch models. After going through the jailbreaking process, you'll need to open icy and follow a few more steps to finish the job. As usual, download at your own risk, and for now, crack is for Windows users only.
Update: The Dev Team has chimed in with the usual list of caveats and warnings. If nothing else, you've now got tacit verification that this release of QuickPwn isn't some malicious hack.

Do you ever post any iPhone article exlusively in Engadget mobile?
I'm just wondering...
ha! like that'll ever happen
Do you ever ask that same question on an article about any other smartphone?
I'm just wondering ...
Twit netcast said 3.0 made battery life worst...coundn't last a day.
It's obvious that would happen with Push No.... Can only hope the next Iphone will be better w/ battery life
so the same as my phone is on 2.2 right now?
Better battery life? FAT CHANCE. Apple displays a particular stupidity when it comes to batteries, and they compound it by refusing to learn from PR debacles and customer complaints. Look at the history of iPods: Instead of addressing the strident battery complaints, Apple instead made the iPods THINNER. Why? Same thing with the MacBook Pro. Nobody was complaining that MacBooks were TOO FAT. So, at the expense of a removable battery, Apple served nobody by making the computer slightly thinner. It's a 17-inch BARGE, Apple; the thickness of it is inconsequential.
It's just the same with the iPhone. Generation 2 still has a non-removable battery. WAKE UP, APPLE. Moreover, they insisted on rounding the back, instead of keeping it squared to provide a bit more battery volume.
We can only hope a decent Android phone eventually appears and puts this crap to rest.
Yeah, @I-Central, that's why all of the Apple products that you mention are doing so poorly in the consumer marketplace.
@ roole
Nah, it only shows that people are gullible, easily swayed by mass media commercials and basically follow the herd mentality.
Not all Apple products are not inherently better than others of the same ilk, they are just marketed better.
"Sometimes, a majority only means that all the fools are on the same side"
Awesome.
I call bullshit. It's still April 1st in parts of the country, PLUS there is currently no announcement about this over at Dev Team's blog.
Upon further examination, the reason it's not on Dev Team's blog is because it's an unofficial release created by another user.
It may actually be legit, but I'd be pretty wary of using it.
If it is for real though, it's a shame this person made the mistake of releasing the exploit to the public while OS 3.0 is still in development. It'll make Apple's job of closing the hole up much easier.
You're right that this was not released by the Dev Team, but releasing it won't make Apple's job of closing the exploit any easier. The hardware has been hacked for all devices and there is no way for Apple to fix that without releasing a new iPhone/iPod touch. They are using the same exploit to crack 3.0 on current devices as with earlier firmware like 2.x.
However, baseband updates on the iPhone cannot be undone, and an exploit has not been found (and may never be found) for the new baseband that is included in the 3.0 beta firmware. So, if you upgrade to the 3.0 beta which updates the baseband on your iPhone, you may never be able to unlock that phone in the future. You will need to wait until the Dev Team releases tools that upgrade the firmware but NOT the baseband for 3.0 so that you can still unlock your phone but have the new features as well.
hmm Can't help but thinking this was a bad move to release it so soon. They should have waited a bit before releasing it so that apple doesn't come up with a quick fix to however they are doing it. However I have no idea what was the thought process on making this and how easy it was for them so we'll wait and see...
I kind of like the sound of "Windows only" when it comes to a hacking an Apple Product.
@jgold
Calm down dude
huh. i didn't realize that they had even jailbroken 3.0b1 yet.
Slightly ironic how we have Apple products being jailbroken using windows.
I think its more poetic justice that windows is giving an apple product more functionality, and that some random windows user is making an apple flagship product more useful than the company itself.
Yeah, because they didn't start jailbreaking on the Macs at all.. right..
I think it would be awesome if the Dev team had an EULA that explicitly forbids reverse engineering and using a debugger. As much as I have a love/hate thing with windows mobile. I do enjoy the ability to load whatever crap I need without needing MS approval. I'm on my third Windows Mobile phone, 6.1 now.
Argh, when only I can have my own iPhone!
Who says you can't?
It works. Just jailbroke my iPhone 3G, running the 2nd 3.0 beta.
Who wants bundles for you Mac users? ;-)
yes please mate.
I'm willing to stay up UBER late to do this (and I would LOVE a Mac bundle) but I have one question: will it render my iPhone 3G unlockable? I'm on T-Mobile USA, and I need the phone to be functional as a phone. I can deal with a few bugs, but if this upgrades the baseband I'm dead in the water for a couple of months.
Okay, uploaded the raw bundles, as well as Icy: http://sellingexpectations.com/2009/04/iphone-3-jailbreak/
You're on your own if you have no idea what to do with them. ;-)
I'm an idiot, I meant to ask if it would make it impossible to unlock. My wording was off. Perhaps I SHOULD wait until tomorrow to do this, ha.
my understanding is that the 3.0 beta DOES upgrade the baseband which would make your phone un-unlockable for the near future. if you want to use it on T-Mobile, i say wait for now.
Have you looked at the bundle at all? I'm trying to see if the new cracked update does indeed remove the baseband update. If it does, it's a good bet that Yellowsn0w will still function.
Never mind, I understand now. It doesn't upgrade the device, it just patches already-cracked devices, which makes my chances of getting a Pwned Unlocked 3.0 device right now moot. Oh well.
omfg, the DEV team is pply a bunch of stundents @ berkley...
This whole thing is a joke...
Hell yeah! I can't wait for the Transformers II movie! That's gonna kick ass!
Pwed on april 1st? I mean engadget did. Its a confirmed fake
This DOES work. It's an unofficial release, and my website is not associated with the iPhone Dev Team as I mentioned in the About page. I forgot to edit the README file to say that this is unofficial but my post on the site does state that it's an unofficial release. :)
is it unlockable? i have an iphone 2g. thanks
Killed my connection to the cell network. I managed to re-install the firmware through iTunes and fixed it. Will try again tomorrow, hopefully just bad luck.
Did the same to me. MAKE SURE YOU JAILBREAK ONLY! do not activate or else it kills your carrier settings. If you mess up just restore with itunes and try again
if you dont activate you cant use the phone functions rite?
let me know! :)
Awesome job qp
once a new iphone is revealed how long after before we can get our hands on it ?
maybe this guy wanted to be the first to crack it ? just so that no one else beat him to it ?
He wasn't the first to crack it. That's why we showed the screen capture and SHA1 of the screen capture on pastebin.com from two weeks ago.
He was the first to publish it, for better or for worse. It's the 3G owners that have the most to lose from it, if they try it.
Does this mean that I can update to 3.0 and be able to sync my iPhone with iTunes without a developer account?
I know the Dev teams has done a lot of work for jail breaking the iPhone and iPod touch, but they kind of seems like a bunch of pompous babies. They seem to have this holier than thou attitude, attacking other jailbreaks to try to discredit them. I have also seen them constantly warn against using jailbreak other than theirs, claiming they have had a jailbreak for a while, but they are just making sure it is safe. I just don't totally buy it, I think it is a cover that they got beat releasing a jailbreak.
I don't think it's the case at all. The one jailbreak that you speak of, the iPod touch 2G, was kept secret for so long so that the Dev Team could (hopefully) have a method that would be applicable to a new, third generation, iPhone. If you look at the timeline, it's such that the jailbreak from the dev team came out several hours (if not less) after the jailbreak from the people selling it. They knew that the cat was out of the bag, so they announced it.
Also, yes, they discount other jailbreakers. But that's because none of the other ones are legitimate! Look at Zibri, the dickwad of the JB community. He released a utility, ziPhone, that (I'm serious) changed your MAC address to be something like z:i:P:h:o:n:e or something like that. That's not safe. That's not a good idea. That's an unsafe tool.
The Dev Team has always been known to release good, stable tools and programs that always work and never damage the device, either permanently or temporarily. They're tried and true, and I trust them to provide good jailbreaks.
Thankfully i've got a mophie juicepack, otherwise that Bluetooth A2DP support would land me in the dead zone before the end of the work day.
Don't forget terminator!
hmmmmmmm
