BenQ's Qisda QPD-111 Creative Design Center MID wins design awards, doesn't exist yet
Not that we have anything against products that don't exist, but it would seem to us convenient to have something to show on the other end of a couple design awards. BenQ's Qisda QPD-111 just won a red dot and iF award, but BenQ doesn't seem quite ready to show it off to the world. The MID sports a 5-inch screen, and is "designed for highly mobile people pursuing the best Internet experience while on the go." That fancy little red "Hot Key" sends you to the world wide internet with a single press, and the device can handle multitouch pinch-to-zoom and other gestures for browsing. There's also a built-in accelerometer, which lets you switch between communication and Internet functions with a little shake of your precious, imaginary MID. There's obviously no information on price or availability at this point -- we're not even sure what OS it's running -- but it's certainly a sexy and almost potentially usable entrant into the confounding and primarily useless MID market.

"BenQ's Qisda QPD-111 Creative Design Center MID wins a design awards..."
Do you not even proof read your titles, no?
Engadget wins an awards for grammar. Story at 11.
Haha. They've fixed it. Nice work.
Hey, if you can get something to float like that picture on the right, you're a winner in my book as well.
I hate design contests, give me the real deal, with the components working. Side note, I also hate futurist (think that Japanese guy on the Discovery channel episodes about the future of mankind) and yeah, yeah, talk about flying cars and crazy embedded computers in sunglasses all you want, until you can deliver it to the masses, I'll be impressed.
typical obnoxious cocky american response to the world.
Typical idiot, how are you going to jam someone who would rather see some results then some fictional specs or what could be. You also can't expect people to jump up at every rumor at the mill or what could be and not at one point finally wanting to see some specs and demos.
I agree with jdmbo1, give me some details on screen resolution, processor speed, or anything before i get excited. Design comes second to me compared to what they put inside, thats where the real beauty and creativity is.
As a design professional, and wanna be futurist, I find both your comments shortsighted, and typically consumerist, i.e. ignorant. What do you think happens every day when you see announcements? Someone worked on that device from concept to production over the course of many years. You think the idea comes out your ass when you need it? No, you keep throwing out crap until a good idea slips out. That's how it typically works.
The only difference between this device and the one you're holding is that this one is 4" longer... sorry, just kidding, I couldn't resist... this device is being revealed pre production, the one you're holding may have been revealed post design / production. Most companies don't want to reveal their designs pre production out of fear that others will copy it and sell more, sooner. I have no idea what BenQ is up to, but sometimes, you just need to design and then something useful comes out of it, even something different.
Think the concept car... i'm sure you've seen some you liked... that's how all design works... even gadgets.
Enough from me, I'm sure. :)
to Ryujin:
wow obviously u totally missed my point here!!! And ur answer is exactly what I expected!! Its just too much fun.
To CP, why are you so quick to call me an American, and how is an opinion cocky? To Kiwikit, I'm all for designs, but keep it to them selves, work on it, produce it, then make an announcement when the final product is done. I guess my main point is, anyone can make up mock designs and concepts, kids draw up flying cars, tech enthusiastic create mock ups of technology they want, but until it goes into production, its all just pictures. By the way, futurist are the biggest crock of crap profession ever established, stop speculating about whats going to happen in the future, and go out and do something to make it happen.
blah nevermind...u just dont get what im talking about. im out.
@ CP - Let's review your responses to both jdmbo1 and Ryujin, in sequence.....
- typical obnoxious cocky american response to the world.

So, our review concludes that you did not actually say a damn thing, because calling somebody 'typical obnoxious cocky american' is not an actual point, as it does not address their statements.
And seriously - all they were doing is condemning the idea of technological mock-ups that, much like your own cognitive thought, will probably never see the light of day.
This I like, a lot. I'll have to find out what OS and features it has. I want a sketch pad and this could be it.
The MID market isn't useless. Your precious iPod Touch is a MID in DAP clothing... a handicapped MID, but a MID none the less.
If a MID were to combine phone, internet, music/movies/other entertainment in a small, lightweight, and inexpensive package then it would be relivent, the only reason MID's suck is because they can't/don't do that.
Looking good, but lets see what it looks like when it's a real product, not just a pretty render.
completely agree - and well said! Most significant element to me being inexpensive - there are devices like the OQO or Sony UX series, but the price tag on these devices is simply foolish (and they have no phone).
Ah! Trogdor! Brilliant.
i feel like smashing this thing. itd be really easy. BAM. broken. completely
I've been rendered...apathetic.
This is no news, Apple wins tons of design awards for every product it releases. Oh yeah, that's right, this is not a product designed by Apple that wins a design award, so it must be news...
Looks good, so when can I get it with Tegra under the hood and a WiMax radio?
I actually have never seen a "pinch to zoom"-supporting device that does that correctly. Have you ? If things go on like this for too long, I'll end up thinking that "pinch to zoom" just ... s*xx. Maybe it does.
My ePenis is huge. I think it may be award-winning.
I'm all for concept designs as it tends to inspire future products. However my problem is that concept designs go through many stages, so we don't know if this particular MID is the source of future products. I would prefer a company be clear about their intentions, is this purely inspirational concept? Or is this something they are looking to put in production?
Heavens not that name again. BenQ will lose all of Eastern Europe if they keep using "Qisda" as a brand.
