DigiTimes conjures up 3.2 and 5 megapixel cameras for future iPhone / iPod touch
Ah DigiTimes, where would we be without your river of tattle? The Taiwan rumor-rag just served up a doozy calling for Apple's "next-generation iPhone" to be equipped with a 3.2 megapixel CMOS sensor from OmniVision. Seems logical as a natural update to the existing 2.0 megapixel camera. DigiTimes also has Apple adding a 5 megapixel CMOS sensor to "another Apple product expected to be launched later in the year." Interesting as in-bezel webcams found in laptops and netbooks are typically less than 2 megapixels. If true, perhaps this will be the shooter found on a bulkier device carrying the iPhone3,1 or iPod3,1 identifiers peeped in the 3.0 firmware. Or not.[Via iPhonebuzz]

No one cares... Theres no evidence
iPhone's getting old, I want a nokia N97
iPod Touch getting a camera???
YES!!!!!!!!!
BRING IT! So glad I held out!
i'm fine with the iphone camera. if i send a picture to a someone (@mms.att.net or whatever) its probably only being displayed on the other person's crappy phone screen so they won't notice the difference.
oh yeh, if you want quality pictures, do what people have done for years--buy a digital camera.
Hmm, I wonder if the new phone will feature some kind of LED flash too...
BayCreek IT - You're honestly saying you prefer carrying extra devices? You don't want a camera phone that can act as a decent replacement? I don't think anyone is expecting an SLR replacement in their pocket anytime soon but I think we're all expecting a camera phone that can give us print-worthy shots within the next year or so.
The 'other Apple device' is going to be their entire laptop line. They still have the same cameras as when they were originally added, and if you think about it it's rather obvious. Why update your smallest camera utilizing device's camera and leave all the larger ones behind it?
You know, everyone criticised Apple for only including a 2.0MP camera but when you look at even the best phone camera, it is not that great. So really, I think Apple made the right decision as there is no usable difference between the iPhone's camera and other phone cameras.
Ummm no.
Nice cover up attempt though.
The point is 2mp photos taked with the iphone are a lot less good than 2mp photos taked with other phones. They put cheap parts, thats it! plastic lenses are not really good. Photos are blurry and noisy.
Anyway, slim device = thin lens. Not really a good thing.
Incorrect, there are the few of the Nokia 5mp phones (for example) from a few years back (n95) that blow the iphone and many other cameras out of the water. So rightfully criticized for the exclusion of a decent camera on the 'worlds most revolutionary phone.'
What?! there are plenty of 2MP cameras that do a better job than the iPhone camera, not to mention 3MP and higher... the iPhone camera is piss poor to be honest.
No, you are all wrong and I choose not to argue.
Hey bob, stomping your feet like a little kid and declaring everyone else wrong is the definition of arguing (VERY poorly, but arguing nonetheless.)
The camera on my iPhone is ok, but Ive seen and use WAY better cameras, and cameraphones. Go away troll/boi.
Nothing beats the flight of the conchords' cameraphone though... It's just so deliciously literal.
Wow Bob, that is incredibly big of you...
..or something.
The iPhone's camera is right on par, if not better, than most camera phone's out there. I know you guys love spewing crap out of your mouth with nothing to back it up but I never found that tactic very convincing.
Here's some I uploaded: http://gallery.me.com/mycomputerhelp#100015
Add on the proper accessories (that aren't available for most other phones) and you can get some truly impressive shots:

@utahnkid
Decent camera phones don't need the macro "add on," since they HAVE a autofocus mechanism that includes a macro mode
Want the sony IDOU
Me too, it's frikkin gorgeous
omg why don't you use an updated picture of the iphone?! You're just trying to make it look bad aren't you!!!!1!

It's supposed to be funny, you dolt. Anyone who doesn't know that's not the iPhone probably doesn't know what the Internet is, much less engadget.
I love that 'shop- it's hilarious.
And my iPhone camera is ok, but I've certainly seen way better.
I'm thinking MacBooks 5,2 will have better iSight too.
I have a feeling that the next major revision after snow leopard will start to advance on the new glass screens by creating some kickass capcitive touch. Or at least they should- it would pwn the ish outta w7.
He was being sarcastic, you dolt.
Nothing new, I need the beast Nokia N97, i can't wait, June please approach fast.
Front facing camera : 3.2MP
Rear Camera : 5MP
That's ... awesome!
honestly that is the only way i would get the new phone. 3.2 is not a big enough jump. but if the 5mp is on the new phone i will be sure to get it. ( i dont really need 2 though, and there never will be 2, what a waste of battery.)
all 3G phone have 2camera now, it's for video calling. We have video calling since 2001 in Japan.
@PuBeLeSs
Just because there is a second camera, doesn't mean it's powered up 100% of the time, neither is the rear camera.
*Crosses fingers for autofocus too*
*crosses fingers for xenon flash*
*Crosses fingers for Flash*
*at least a video capturing?*
OmniVision's 3 & 5 mp sensors perform well in low light and are capable of video, even 1080p for the 5 mp, but it'd still have to be supported by the phone. Specs make no mention of autofocus or lens specs, don't think they make complete camera modules (outside of evaluation samples), just the sensors.

Darn, I was hoping for 5mp at the minimum. I hope this iPhone 'Pro' isn't over $599 US dollars
i mean 2 "cameras"
I would rather like GPS in the new iPod Touch
How likely is it that the 3.2MP will go to the iPhone nano and the 5.0 will go for the big boy?
Would everyone stop getting caught up in all this megapixel bull? What difference will it make if the lens is sh1te... My 2.1MP Ixus still takes better pictures than a lot of cheapy 5MP snappy shooters. Unless they upgrade the lens, all you'll get is rubbish pictures you can zoom further into. Oh and taking up more file space for nothing.
Crossing fingers for ANY type of flash.
Crossing fingers for no more than 3.2 megapixels. That's WAY more than the number of pixels that should be on a sensor this tiny anyway. The more pixels, the suckier and noisier the pics. You want better pics? Use better optics. Learn.
Crossing fingers for 3.2 MP MAX! In fact 2.1 MP would probably be even better on this teeny tiny sensor. As Joe inferred, more megapixels = crappier, more noisy pics on micro sized sensors. Keep in mind that the sensors on regular digicams are a LOT bigger, and even THEY suffer from pixel stuffing. And it's all because of the ignorant masses who equate a larger number with higher quality. Any of you aware that DSLR sensors are more than 50 TIMES bigger than these cellphone sensors?
If you want better cellphone pics, USE BETTER OPTICS AND PROCESSING!!!
Rant over. :) Ooops...almost.
Put a FLASH on the new iPhone, please.
