Wii MotionPlus can be oversensitive to your needs, say EA devs
The jury's still out on whether or not Nintendo follows our logic and is gonna release the Wii MotionPlus attachment before June 18th, the day Electronic Arts debuts the first compatible game Grand Slam Tennis. Regardless, the developers of that game want you to know that they had to actually to tone down the touted 1:1 responsiveness to make the game playable. We can't say that we blame them -- after all, the air resistance of a Wii remote is slightly different than that of a full tennis racket -- but we'd love to have the option to crank up that sensitivity and see just how unstable it really is. So when do we a chance to find out for ourselves, eh Nintendo?

isnt it just a gyro sensor? also it could eliminate the name for the IR sensor/LED lights
Not quite. It works in tandem with the IR sensor bar. It uses that to calibrate the devices exact, initial location, then relies on the gyroscopes and accelerometers to determine movement from its original point.
To clarify, without the sensor bar, the Wiimote (even with WiiMotionPlus) would have no idea where it's facing in relation to the TV. But by using the sensor bar for initial calibration, the Wii then knows where the controller' is in relation to the TV.
I don't think that's quite correct, Andre. You can actually play many games with the sensor bar turned off completely; the bar is only for any pointing, or cursor movement. All gyro/motion-sensing action is all done within the remote, and transmitted via bluetooth to the Wii. Try playing Wii Sports without the sensor bar, it's the same as if it's on... Maybe I'm wrong though...
Well the the wii motion it tracks it motion most other games just tell what way the wii mote is traveling. This knows the exact postion so it uses the sensor bar to calibrate.
I'm probably the biggest wii hater their is since it's ruining gaming as we know it, and this device just delivers what nintendo promised to begin with.
But this is a non-complaint. It's better to be over sensitive than under, since you can easily compensate for it being over sensitive by multiplying by a number between 0 and 1.
I'm kind of curious to see where the devs will go with this. The Wii has kind of felt stagnant in the last few months for me, and I can't help but wonder if this new 1:1 motion ratio will help make me a little more interested than I have been for a while.
Yes, more paddle and ball mini games, now with extra precision! Great!
actual zelda sword fighting?
Pick up MadWorld
Wait...if you want to play a tennis game with 1:1 sensitivity on the wii.
Why don't you just go out and play tennis?
The main problem is that most people don't have the skills to play a realistic sport game, even the Tiger Woods game is running on a set path for the club. I do wish EA would allow everyone to test their level, but looking at all those Guitar Hero players that think they are musicians, I think gamers would rather continue to have make-believe than real.
The day for 1:1 movement is here, and now we can't get it for our own good. Nice EA.
Isn't that sort of the point of a lot of games? So we can pretend that we as good as Tiger Woods, even though we aren't. Most games would suck pretty bad if they limited you by your actual physical ability.
I don't think it's so much the skill as it is the fact that you just can't really imagine a ball that isn't really there.
If the game wasn't on a set course you'd have to be swinging at a ball that doesn't actually exist....in virtual space that exists there the console decides it should. It's not really feasible to do something like that IMO.
Oh Noooos!!! the motion sensor is too sensitive. There is no way we could reduce the sensitivity with the software in our games... Seriously, isn't this a good thing to have more capability then is required. Quit crying.
Umm, if you were to read the original article, EA says exactly that. *sigh* They've compensated for it so gamers shouldn't have any trouble with it being overly-sensitive.
"after all, the air resistance of a Wii remote is slightly different than that of a full tennis racket"
So there's a need for all those Wii Remote accessories after all!
well, it's not really the air resistance so much as the moment of inertia.... :P
First off, one to many "to's" and you forgot "get" at the end. Lol, no worries tho.
Secondly, as some of you may know, the wiimote can do without the IR sensor bar, as long as you have 2 candles above/below your TV that are spaced about the length of the sensor bar. You know, for those romantic Wii nights.
Oh, and I'd be afraid what else you'd see with WiiMotionPlus added to this video:

@Tony
That vid actually made me lol! You win a cookie! :D
Oh wow! Thanks for the cookie!
*munch munch munch* *cough cough*...*choke*...*keel over and die*
Great that the device is so accurate. That's a great place to start for developers. Eager to test it out.
I can tell you just by the shear number of wii games ive sold to gamestop within days of release that developers of wii games already dumb down the responsiveness of motion controls enough without even thinking about it. Wii Fit, sports, galaxy, metroid, and madworld are the only cartridge games i play anymore. Even lost winds does a better job with motion controls than 99% of the crap thats been designed for my beloved system.
maybe monkeyball would be better w/ this? freakin irresponsive mess.
Last time I played Lost Winds... Motion controls weren't even used in the game. That game is purely using the IR camera on the Wii remote with the face buttons and Nunchuk of course.
"Cartridge"? Err, there hasn't been a home system that's taken those in two console generations.
what if they just put 2 of the rubber protectors on it?
720p graphics with true 1:1 motion and able to tell the remote in relation to the TV, would be the KILLER CONSOLE!
"720p" is resolution. This alone says absolutely nothing about graphical power.
Does anyone proof read these articles before they post them? Jeesh.
Huh? Shouldn't the 1:1 response make the game easier to play, not harder? Given the fact that most Wii owners are used to just throwing their Wiimote in any direction they want and still have it do what they wanted, why is EA telling us that they made it easier? Couldn't they have just thrown in an easy, medium and hard mode?
I don't know why they had to tell people this, Wow we got different values from Wiimotion plus and we compensated for it! woop dee doo
If it's anything like the iPhone, then no, 1:1 is not much fun. It's like image stabilization in a camera: designed to reduce the tiny jitter one gets in the extremities. Not perceptible to us, who are always moving, but you have to dampen/filter the input just a tad so the thing (racket in this case) isn't just sitting there, vibrating at you on the screen.
Is it frowned upon to point out typos?
If not: "So when do we [have] a chance to find out for ourselves, eh Nintendo?"
8P
Ah yes Nintendo, continue to make my Wiimote even larger, soon I will achieve my ultimate goal... The WiiClaymore!
I have been waiting for this and June can't come soon enough.
I am happy that devs are reporting that the device is accurate.
I totally get that most people are not skilled enough to have 'fun' playing games if they were let loose with the accuracy in this add-on, but the mere fact that more is possible makes me want to own this. I think the point EA is trying to make is that most people haven't golfed at a level that will make it a 'fun' experience. How frustrating would it be to slice or fade your shots with your virtual Tiger Woods? Not to frustrating for a golf pro because he 'gets it', but super frustrating for a newb who doesn't understand golf mechanics at all.
Same goes for Tennis, etc.
I think the way they need to solve this is introduce levels of skill. Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Also have an on-screen representation of the path your wiimote is making to drive the point home of what the differences are between a Beginner wiimote movement and the Advanced movement (one is more forgiving than the other).
they should and will in the future build it in the Wii Remote itself and just sell and ship the new remote, but its all over money, get people to buy this first cuz they want it, but then in months or a year put it in the remote because its more convenient and people will buy, a way to make money
I own a Wii but I don't put that 'condom' on my Wii motes
It's just humiliating to the game console.
who're the people who bought the wii when everyone's complaining how bad the console is?
don't tell me they don't use teh internets???
Nintendo has a great marketing staff
I just want this hardware. just release it already. I know there is no way that I am the only one who feels teased about this product and then now they seem to be saying that its only going to be compliant during compatable games? I will be very dissapointed if that is true. Nintendo needs to get the motion plus on the streets very soon or make some more damn games that I actually want to play!
sorry, i am just sick of them dicking around with this thing for so long while they could be making zeldas or another metroid
Until it comes out "early" to please everyone and then it's not what they expect and everyone bitches that "Nintendo rushed it out as a cash grab." There is no winning, alas, so just be patient so that when we DO get our grubby mitts on it, it works to it's best.
In a side-related EA story, I hear they (EA) are going to easy up on their mad DRM crap they put in PC games, and released a managing utility for the games that have the hated securom-extreme-DRM already.
Thank gods for small favours.
