Giant Nokia 5800 XpressMusic invades Antwerp
We're not sure why giant phones are suddenly all the rage, but it seems to be a trend -- Nokia just put up this four-foot 5800 XpressMusic in Antwerp. Unlike the giant Samsung Messager that recently invaded Chicago, it's not actually a working phone, but the custom Flash interface designed by Create Multimedia is meant to mimic the OS as closely as possible -- so we're guessing it's just as frustrating as the real thing. Passerby can play with the Maps app, browse photos, and listen to music through some nifty through-the-glass speakers -- hit the read link for the video.

Useless, Nokia has missed giantic stylus.
Glass speakers you say.
Does it allow you try the internet connection?
If so, download a 1min mp3 file that have the same frequency as the glass, and see it shatter.
I doubt the net would be active, but if it is a fully functional copy, we could use the blue-tooth to send the file :)
that is an amazing idea
That would be sweeeeet.
Does it play flash? If so, there's quite a number of video sites on the internet that most shop owners will NOT like to see on display in their front window...
She shouldn't stand there unless she's looking for trouble.
-touches her- 0.0
I've actually seen something similair to this in the Netherlands a year back or so.
It was a Viewty though.
That touch me arrow is pointing to the girl or to the phone?
phone, what phone?
dude wth she's like 10
I would like to try it out, i hope the Ui is as fast and responsive as the real thing.
Are you talking about the girl or the phone?
"as frustrating as the real thing"
Which means:
"not at all if you've ever used a Nokia phone before"
And since that's about half a billion people I think most of us are OK with it.
Mark Anderson,
your fanboyism is truly astonishing. "i" pray that one day, you will grow a mind of your own, and with it, some common sense.
"i" pity the fool that is Mark Anderson.
Are you trying to become the personification of the word "irony"?
Only explanation for your comment as I havent seen anybody more fanboyish than "iloveapple".
@iLoveApple
The industrial strength irony of your comment made Baby Jesus cry.
As for Nokia, nah, I'm not a fanboy - they've made some horrific mistakes *cough*N96*cough* but the 5800 (if you actually understand the development behind it which Chris clearly doesn't) ain't one of them.
I wanna see her from the front, but what I see looks pretty nice :D
Engadget rocks for hatin on phones other than iPhone!
Nilay just take off that link to Chris's review cause he really had no idea what he was talking about.
its just a damn shame the OS is shitty, unless Id be having it clipped on my belt as I type this, love that phone thou, to bad theres no way EASY to put Android on it
I don't understand what the issue is with this phone and it's OS, it has to be the only phone other than a G1 or iPhone which has a touch screen and doesn't have any slow down in the UI. The only issue is sometimes needing to use the stylus, however, I do see S60 6th edition correcting this, infact I think it has LESS slowing down than an iPhone (not had much experience with a G1 beyond a little play at the store), it is in no way a crap OS at all.
It's not apple though is it?
i was pretty sure he was talking about the girl. o.O
My Centro's touch-screen UI is faster than my buddy's iPhone...
You know, I had pre-ordered this phone and was completely ready to return it before even receiving it based off of Engadget's review. And guess what, I love it. It's not slow, web browsing is light years over my N95, and the form factor makes it very comfortable to use (also better than my N95). I feel like I have to note this in all my posts, but I' did own the iPhone for 9 months. Anyway, the only thing I wish they'd really improve is the camera quality. Usually I've been neutral to all sides when Engadget has criticized certain phones seemingly unfairly, but this incident is the first that's caused me to think everyone was right and Engadget is biased against Windows and Nokia.
Malkmus - Yeah you're right. EVERY major tech blog/publication panned it but based on your experience alone, we can walk away knowing that they were all wrong and a part of some wild conspiracy theory against Nokia. That makes way more sense.
This is how Engadget goes: Anything positive about the iPhone (which is far and few between if coming from Engadget) gets booed, despite WORLD renown syndication. ANYTHING other than the iPhone is criticized and Engadget is a part of some conspiracy against the company. Every person commenting on any Engadget story claims Engadget is in bed with Apple (despite consistent shit talking from Engadget nearly every time Apple is mentioned)
The same thing happened when the BB Storm was panned. I personally used that device and find it laughable that BB thought it was ready for public consumption. It really is embarrassingly bad. Not mediocre, but straight up BAD. But read the comments and you'd think it was the greatest thing since sliced bread.
You guys make no sense.
@utah
Every journal panned it? Is that wht CNET give it an 8 as do Trusted Reviews, Stuff and T3 give it 4 stars and the vast majority of the press tech sections are very positive?
Try not to be a fanboy all your life, son.
I think while nobody's playing with it, it should play this song as loud as it can :D

:D
And while the store's closed, it should be playing this:

"we're guessing it's just as frustrating as the real thing" jeez guys. And there's a whole bunch of these around London, didn't realise they were news else I'd've sent the pics in ages ago.
I saw a few giant iPhones in shops around Cribbs Causeway, shame it didn't work though, looked pretty real. :)
Cricket has one of those giant Messengers out side of it's store here in Center City Philadelphia too.
Hmm.. touching a 13 year old girl lol....
Is it just me, or did that girl's hot ass catch your eye before the giant nokia?
what giant nokia?
oh this article is about a phone, ok
There are things in the picture I want to touch, the phone isn't one of them
Mmmmm, nice butts! I don't mind touching her (.)|(.) too!!!
Hah, that young lady is well placed ! I'd touch that, over and over, back ... uh, sorry.
The phone, I'll pass.
Oh man, this is just BEGGING for one of those 'Actual Size' stickers that they're selling over at XKCD.
-- so we're guessing it's just as frustrating as the real thing
Really? Even you have to realize that that was no "review", it was just a rant about petty small things which have nothing to do with the real experience of the phone.
I used to like this blog, and i'm not liking where it's headed.
Fuck you engadget.
"mwaaa. I don't like it when every one else's opinions don't mirror my own 100 %"
It's a blog. Get over yourself, you petulant twat.
man, you people who complain about complaints using the fact that "everyone has an opinion" are the most ironic pieces of shit in the world. do you realize, since everyone has an opinion, they can have an opinion about someone's opinion, and by saying they are wrong you are yourself having an opinion about the opinion they had of one's opinion? he can say fuck you endgadget all he wants, the comment mass was meant for such opinions. now when he really crosses the line, is if he says "i love giz"
i guess to settle this i think on of you wiz's are gonna have to find her reflection and enhance it so we can all see if she is hot or are we all just little bit of child molesters.
wow ... you can see that i was totally watching mythbusters while typing this because there are all kind of mistakes ... oh well you get my point
Wow, its amazing what the "Big Guns" in the Mobile Telecommunications Industry come up with just to stay in the game to compete for peoples attention to buy their products.
I reckon its a great Marketing Strategy to get peoples gauge on what they like about the
latest gadgets on offer. Much like what I do in my business.

Learning about marketing from a spammer. Nice one!
Oxygen thief.
"we're not sure why giant phones are suddenly all the rage"
really? couldn't happen to have anything to do with those giant iphones displayed in every apple store in the world when the iphone came out, could it? nah....
I woulda touch her for sure!
The 5800 would only be frustrating to use if you're a complete fucking spastic.
For fuck's sake, it's one of the easiest phones to use, ever. Get off Apple's dick, seriously.
