Nokia N97 hits FCC with glorious photography
We're not sure if these are false color images, weird lighting, a Finnish sense of humor, or an actual production color scheme for the N97, but regardless, we like it. Nay, love it. Ship it, Nokia. Anyhow, the FCC has published full submitted details of one of the non-North American varieties of Nokia's halo device for the year, putting GSM / EDGE 850 / 1900 and WCDMA band II (1900MHz, if you're curious) through their paces along with the FM transmitter, Bluetooth, and WiFi. We've also got a manual to peruse -- unfortunately, details on the Ovi Store are missing, but at least we can brush up on our phone basics before we get our hands on a device. Anyone else totally forget that it's got an internal magnetic compass, or was that just us?

Oh God... 10 million colours the human eye can perceive, and Nokia went with this one.
Yea I was gonna say...they LOVE it??? Ugh I think this is pretty nasty lookin, especially with the pink on the screen too :P
This reminds me of a very silly Joke
Teacher: Class give me a sentence with the words, Green, Yellow, and Pink
Student: Phone goes "Green Green...........Green Green", I pick-up phone and say "Yellow!", then Close line "Pink"
All the Pink made reminded me of this Silly Joke
I'm sure they deliberately made it as unattractive and fake as possible, including tinting the screen. That way nobody's going to wander off and sell it on eBay. Or if they do, few people would buy it.
WTF?
N97 hardware design = great
Symbian software system and UI = sucks
I love your avatar.
symbian is the most powerful and user friendly mobile phone OS. symbian has a ton of apps like push e-mail, multitask, open word docs, download podcasts over the air, and browse the web with flash in browser.
Hey Jacob, thanks, you are granted to use the avatar, and you are officially the first member of the "Engadget Evil Comment Inc".
Hey John, come on *hug, the fact is my 5800XM hangs all the time with mere 1000+ songs and 200 jpgs, so I say it sucks, really.
I wouldn't say it sucks, it is a very nice OS it's just that they slapped a few bigger icons on it and assumed it would be a fantastic OS for touch devices which it isn't.
I thought this was KIRF NOKLA garbage, at first. Ironic.
I dont understand how that's irony. The NOKLA is supposed to look like a NOKIA. What a suprise the NOKIA looks like a NOKLA (sarcasm).
its ironic because your supposed to mistake the fake for the real thing, not the other way around...
theres 30 seconds of my life i'll never get back
WCDMA?!
does this mean what i think it means? ::cautious grin::
Nope, it doesn't Spint/Verizon/Telus/Bell guy.
Nope.

ok yea its an ugly color.
I'm starting to want one of these. I hope it is released soon.
"magnetic compass"
is there any other kind?
An electronic compass.
http://www.gpsreview.net/electronic-compass/
anything that can tell direction when you're standing still uses magnetism. electricity and magnetism are very closely related.
What if i look at the sun at about 3pm and assume that the direction the sun is from me is roughly west?
I'm sorry I cant answer that until I know where you are.
Gyrocompass, to name the oldest (1885) alternative, apart from getting bearing from celestial objects. Look it up in wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyrocompass
Gyro compass.
It's not apple though is it engadget!
i can't belive noone went for 'moral compass'
ohforfucksake: i stand corrected.
is nokia n97 set for worldwide launch?
Pink is nice...but not this kind of pink. Gross.
finally, usb charging for a flagship
I am in love. Unfortunately, like most women, this phone will also cost more than I can afford.
[Get your hooker jokes in now.]
IM TRAPPED!
I'd hi... err, buy it.
I know it's just bad lightening, but that pink doesn't look half bad!
It probably would look better if there was good lightning. And it was struck by it.
Thats not the real color, i think its a brown N97, it looks like the hue has been tampered with or poor lighting from a probably chinese cam or may be a stupendous phone camera *cough iphone *cough , and check out the white glowing lens cover, more proof of a crappy camera or hue change.
Me4u2 is right...
For more proof, check out the 3rd page of the FCC document named "SAR setup" (or, for those of you who are lazy: https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=1091070&native_or_pdf=pdf). You will see the normal N97 colour and can contrast it with the other images...
Looks like a lens or filter was applied, either on the camera taking the picture or afterwards... probably on purpose... you don't make that kinda mistake accidentally...
if you look at the internal pics, the back of the screen is pink too. why would they waste their time and money coloring something u'll never see? It's not really a pink phone, something got messed with
Yep, Nokia photoshopped the images for secrecy reasons.
So does that mean it's not a quad-band phone?
Compass - alright, fancy, but not THAT useful.
The FM transmitter - now THAT's a treat.
Who gives a flying rat's behind about the colour? Jeez. If it wasn't tampered with and it WAS pink, you really think they'd miss out on the male market by producing this monochromatic phone?
If it wasn't tampered with, it'd be aimed at female buyers and the dudes that have a fetish for pink.
How often does Nokia stick with just one production colour for their top-of-the-line handsets?
By the way, the 'green' call icon leans more towards blue.
Who cares about its compass? More to the point, what processor is it packing? And why aren't they telling anyone?
It looks like an iPhone, with the touch UI interface.
I have an n95, as mentioned above the hardware is mostly good -= though the unprotected lens cover gets scratched, making the camera feature kinda useless.
But while Symbian may be technically good, it needs a serious front end overhaul, the kind that comes from the inside out and I have my doubts Nokia can do it. There are too many different ways to do the same things, and every app works differently. And if the software is like the n95 version, features like the music software are awful.
So, it looks like a nice device.. if it could run Android.
This may be a stupid point to raise, but could this be the thin plastic cover that they sometimes ship the product with and the FCC just failed to remove? (Or not.)
