WiFi-equipped BlackBerry Storm 2 coming to Verizon in September?
Looks like you might be able to cross at least one bullet point off of your Storm 2 wishlist. According to unnamed source who SlashGear swears is the bee's knees, the successor to BlackBerry's touchscreen smartphone will add WiFi support for faster home / coffee shop web browsing. The informant hinted there's other surprises on the horizon but wouldn't give specifics, so for now you'll just have to keep dreaming about that SurePress touchscreen that doesn't slow down your texting. As for when we should expect the sequel, the report pointed to a release sometime in September on Verizon's network.

the storm didnt have wifi ??????????? LOL
I own a Storm also. It was the best choice I had because I wasn't going to switch my plan over just to get a different phone. I am kinda disappointed they are doing this if it is true. and I hope they have some upgrade incentive for us first generation Storm users.
All in all i upgraded from a Treo 700wx and I personally love the Storm.
Being a Storm owner, I would rather not have WiFi....just one more security breech to worry about. Ever used Netwitness? Or one of 1,000's of other packet/wifi sniffers?
It doesn't bother me for the following reasons:
1. If I'm at home, I'm using my laptop and not my phone to browse the internet.
2. If aforementioned internet is serious business, I break out the ethernet cable despite AES encryption.
3. Back to the phone, I use it to dick around in public WiFi hotspots. Not serious business. Serious business is not to be done with public WiFi anyway.
4. You're more than welcome to sniff out the traffic I use at hotspots like those at my university. Enjoy the pro... Facebook drama. Even if you sniffed out packets with my login info...it's one of several bullshit e-mail accounts that I use for worthless registrations and it's not a password related to any other ones that I use.
I have phone with no wifi, Sprint 3g only. It works in most places, only place I've found out is at my sisters house, but she has a computer and I carry my netbook with me to use her wifi. For those of you here with wifi on your phone, how/where do you use it?
The battery life of the current Storm sucks with use of Rev. A, I cannot imagine how bad it will be if they shove WiFi in this device. Please, RIM, unless you want more bad press, hold off on this till you can figure out how to make the device last through a day.
you guys do know that this is all marketing, they did the same with the iPhone. They leave out one major spec but then add it in the next model. People are still going to buy the original and when the newer one with the missing feature comes about a year or so later and more people buy it and people renew it after their 2 year contracts
Instead of WiFi, I'd prefer they remove the POS from the Storm .
Hopefullyu they will be able to refine their touch screen. Balancing the whole LCD on one button in the middle was not smart.
I opted for the Omnia over the Storm when it first came out due to all the problems they were having. I gotta say the Omnia does have WiFi, but I rarely use it. It is only a little faster. Check the specs, wifi on phones don't get the bandwidth of the wifi card in your laptop. Also wifi drains the battery. Plus I am rarely in an area out of EVDO. So wifi, nice to have but not very useful in my opinion.
I can't believe this wasn't included on the orignal storm.
Just another reason verizon sucks.
Anyone into gadgets should just avoid verizon, their phone lineup is a joke, and there's nothing good to buy unlocked.
I'll believe it when it comes out. VZW is nortious for disabling features on their phones that other carriers provide you as standard so they can charge you for things. Wi-Fi means not using their bits and no revenue for them.
Also, remains to be seen if the the slingplayer for BB will be permitted on the storm, for the same reason. VZW wants to charge for their VCast service. Unlike them to let you watch your own for free.
I know people said that things were disabled.. but I think I was always just lucky..
When I had my motorola V710 then whatever EVDO one after that. I used to tether it to my laptop for the $15 a month vcast. I actually believe my little brother STILL uses it for that.
I think something was up with the bluetooth on this though. Someone said that it was limited. I always just transferred stuff with the memory card adapter.
My blackberry pearl I had google maps from day one with GPS. I also have google maps with GPS on my Storm and it runs fine.
The lack of Wifi. I don't have wifi at my house - I know I know, but I just have my desktop tethered to the ethernet and I don't use the internet that often at home. (only at work like now). So the lack of Wifi right now doesn't bother me. I'll let you know about the wifi in July when I go to Europe though.
I totally agree with the editing feature in Black Berry Storm. I've been struggling with the text feature of Iphone especially if you are used to Nokia or Sony Ericsson brands.Wait till you see the integrated and WiFi feature and the improve SureTouch feature. These new features will definitely redeem Storm.
Btw, I just want to share this information I found which is definitely useful for Storm users. There is an All Blackberry Storm Apps that do not require any compatibility mode. It has a Cool Call Blocker application, useful tip calculator, Typing speed application, a bartender app that tells you what drinks you can make based on what you have in your kitchen and even a super-quick and bright flashlight app! You can check these apps at http://epicapplications.com.
This is a must have for Blackberry Storm fanatics!
Wifi on the Storm 2 is only rumored. And the rumor is the phone could be released as late as the second quarter of 2010. With Verizon's history on Wifi I wouldn't hold your breath.it’s pretty clear Verizon’s stance with Wi-Fi, but no tri-band HSDPA? We can only assume Verizon thought that with tri-band HSDPA, people would be unlocking these things left and right to use the devices on AT&T
