Apple Store down globally (update: new Xserve)
Here we go again. It's Tuesday and the Apple store has gone down in the US, Europe, and across Asia which is a pretty good indicator of new product(s). So what are we looking at? 2TB Time Capsule, Xserve refresh (yawn), or something a bit more interesting (but not big enough for a press conference) like an ION-based Mac mini? We'll know in a few hours -- the Store usually lights up at 0830 New York time.Update: New Xserve announced (as rumored) with 2x the performance. A fine addition to your raised floor apartments we're sure.
[Thanks, Sam M.]

@ P e e e:
So it took him one second to piss and three seconds to shake? Dear lord.....it's a MONSTER.
@Hashbrown Hunter
That's the funniest thing I've heard all day. I literally laughed my ass off for like 5 minutes. :) Thanks for making my day.
Steve Jobs peeing is a hell of a lot more exciting than hearing about Windows 7 (aka Vista 2: Final Chapter).
@ Cody:
I'm an entertainer first and foremost. Then I'm an annoying commenter of Engadget. Then I actually have a life, but lately I've been forgetting about that last one.
an Ion Mini would really float my boat, how about an ION Macbook Mini, that'd be really freakin' fantastic right now. And I'm a windows/android guy too!
Unrealistic. First off Mac Mini's just got updated to nvidia 9400 graphics. Secondly the Mac Mini takes the hand-me-down engineering from the Mac Book and since the MB is not based on ION I wouldn't expect to see it in the Mini.
Why does the 2tb time capsule link go to Intuitive Surgical.
Because you'll need to sell an arm and a leg to cover the cost of a 2TB drive from Apple.
When you're a paraplegic you'll be wishing you would have instead invested in a HP WHS (MediaSmart Server) and saved hundreds in the process...oh and your limbs too !
Is it really necessary to take down the whole store for hours just to add new products?!
Gives the rumour mill enough time to spin up with some heartfelt speculation before coming crashing to a halt with the ultimate disappointment that Apple have, once again, completely failed to launch anything interesting.
Is that comment really necessary every single time Apple takes its store down? I don't think so.
Necessary? Is it necessary for me to drink my own urine? No, but I do it anyway because it's sterile and I like the taste.
@Adam
THIS is really nice to know...
@adam
i got it, +1
MacBook Nano with aluminium body, 10.1" screen, Atom, and 160GB HDD. Yeah, right...
so i see apple hasn't figured out a way to add new product without taking the store down..
They are still learning how to use Dreamweaver!
I'm pretty sure it's a marketing thing, rather than a technical one. You're reading this article, right?
It's called free publicity, dip sh*t.
Or, it isn't publicity, they really don't know how to do it.
They need to invest in some Microsoft Servers.
They have to do this. Imagine a store (Apple) where new product shows up only a couple of times a year. People simply do not go there (nothing new anyway) so they have to go through this hoopla of a introduction to remind people that they are still alive and there uis a new product (and it is just a few month after the previous earth shattering announcement :-))
I have always wondered while the whole of an online store needs to go
down to add one or two items. Is apple that technically challenged or
is this another consumer manipulation method?
It has to be a marketing gimmick. I'd imagine they'd have the same effect if they just put a countdown timer on their site somewhere, but it's apple and they have to be cute. As an ecommerce software engineer, I think it's impossible that this is for any technical reason.
They do it on purpose. And as long as the blogsphere continues to report it, it will work in Apple's favor, and they will continue to do it.
Engadget is so fast with something like this,
Microsoft announce the release date of Windows Mobile 6.5 days ago (May 11) , but nothing is here.
Microsoft is still alive?
Yeah ofc. Even TUAW or MacRumors don't have it posted.
Link to Microsoft's announcement of WinMo 6.5 launch date please?

Thxs
Pretty sure that's just a learning session on the Windows Mobile 6.5 track at TechEd 2009. Not an announcement of WinMo 6.5 RTM or better.
Thomas
Bluetooth Headset?
For just 199.99
it's so strange... if any other store or service online is down for just a couple of hours people are in at outrage. but apple, NO.
it's okay for them to take down the store for hours, just to add one or 2 things.
what if amazon did that every time they had to add stuff to there database
It's not that they need to, current technology no longer requires a database be taken completely offline to update one (or more) items.
This is merely an Apple marketing technique to create hype/speculation about new product(s) - and as you can see, WE are commenting about it just moments after.
Ehh... but how about refreshed iPhone? :)
This could be strange is Apple updates TimeCapsule... becouse it did recently and at that time allso was great time to tell if some bigger capacities and/or price drops are coming...
Maybe there will be some extra colors for iPod Shuflle, iPhone?
Let's see. Summer is coming. And this year will allso impact Apple sales... probably some cheaper MAC solution will come as an answer to Microsofts ADs
OMG the Zune site was down a little while ago. Does that mean new hardware?
Turns out they just changed their servers.
And added streaming podcast support from your web browser on the zune.net page.
"i'll buy anything if it's shiny and made by apple"
Dual band airport express?
Snow Leopard?
they are going to halve the price of their over-priced products? well thats my wish atleast, maybe i'd buy the 16gb ipod nano then. Still cant believe they cancelled the 80GB ipod classic and now only sell the really expensive 120 or 160gb version (cant remember which it is). They are forcing you to pay huge bucks even more so than before:(
Maybe they'll remove quicktime from the itunes installer so you arent forced to install it:)
i guess we can always dream we'll find out what the Apple $tore has in store for us soon enough.
Their 80GB version got a 40GB upgrade. They canceled the 120GB.
You're paying the same price for the 120GB that you were paying for the 80GB.
hmm, a ion-baes mini would actually be the first apple-product i'd buy (if its below 500$, that is ^^)
i'm wondering about new 30" displays for those displayport macs
And, Thomas,
Sorry, I'm a bit harsh to your post, pls forgive me.
Apple certainly don't take their store down every time they add a product. Accessories and other more trivial products are added all of the time.
