iPhone 3.0 video recording interface, compass support spotted? (Update: voice dialing, too)
iPhone OS 3.0 is riddled with hints that video recording is on the way, and the latest is is this supposed screenshot of a revised camera app with a video toggle. MacRumors says it comes up when certain config files are edited to make it seem like a video camera is present, but it's not clear exactly what steps have to be taken, so we're treating this one cautiously until we can confirm it. Other secret features buried in the plists are said to include "auto-focus camera," "voice control," and "magnetometer," which is assumed to be a compass. Yep, all stuff we'd expect from an iPhone revision around, say, June, but nothing earth-shattering -- and if the video features are as mediocre as the current iPhone camera, we don't think the Flips of this world have too much to worry about.
Update: Boy Genius Report has scored some other 3.0-culled goodies, including what appears to be voice dialing ("Voice Control" as they're calling it), a digital battery strength readout, and further evidence of video support. Beta 3, where are you?

I highly doubt the video will be any good, considering how under-par the camera is on current iPhones!
I don't know know, the new iPhones are supposedly sporting 3 and 5 megapixel cameras. Now Apple already supports cam video on Macs with iSight cameras and Photobooth/iChat. They have broad support for video editing with iMovie, Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro. I would be shocked if the video features aren't robust, but who knows.
The iPhone camera does fine - as does every other phone camera out there. You're not using these to create works of art, you're taking quick snaps with your friends in front of a bar.
What the camera desperately needs is a macro mode - and from the rumours we might actually get this. There are bajillions of possibilities for features when you can begin imaging printed things, such as barcodes or text... I tried doing a QR code app on iPhone, but the lack of close-range focus killed it. I had to print the codes on a quarter sheet of letter-sized paper just for the iPhone to get a reliable read.
How many more times does PACman need to post that stupid list to be able to call it spam?
ha, as if flip cameras are any better...
Even if the iPhone is a smartphone, which is a matter of opinion, WinMo has way more apps simply because anyone can write a little app to do whatever they want. And it's had full HTML browsers for yonks. Opera mobile anyone?
@P.A.C Man
What makes you think anyone cares? What you are doing is accentuating the perception that anyone who uses an Apple product is a wanker. Please stop and maybe you will be taken seriously.
P.A.C. Man dont you see everyone wants you to stfu already?
Do you know why people flame the iPhone? Because they're too poor to afford it.
And you like the iPhone, you hypocrite. Stop forcing your views down our throats, and well stop doing the same.
No
Yes.
PACMAN -
Your stuff isn't new. It's the same crap repeated over and over again. The fact that some fart application was added to the app store isn't noteworthy.
Also, it would help if you got your facts straight about Apple's firsts. First browser with full HTML support ... lol.
Finally, 3.0 does nothing but provide functionality that should have existed in the first place. Let's not get too crazy about taking video with your phone or voice dialing. All features that have been present on both smart and dumb phones for years.
P.A.C. Man i own a MacBook and a 16gig Touch and i still dont like you. My HTC phone still has more apps and even more customizable than a jailbroken iphone.
P.A.C. man, I am writing this on my Macbook Pro that is charging my iphone... with that being said no one cares. You are a loser
Well, just remember that you guys that hate the iPhone are in the minority. The Anti-Apple people might be more active in the comment sections on Engadget, but don't forget that the iPhone got voted Gadget of the Year by the majority of people that come to this site. Go back to this post and refresh your memory.
http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/30/the-winners-of-the-2008-engadget-awards/
So complain all you want. At the end of the day, the iPhone is still more popular than most the smartphones that you guys like. The fact also remains that people bought the iPhone in record numbers because it had features that no other smartphones had at the time:
MULTI-TOUCH
A FULL INTERNET HTML browser, instead of a WAP browser.
Visual Voicemail
An App Store
And a bunch of other things I'm too lazy to write.
I like how John Gruber at Daringfireball.net explains Apple's approach.
"If there’s a formula to Apple’s success over the past 10 years, that’s it. Start with something simple and build it, grow it, improve it, steadily over time. Evolve it. The iPhone exemplifies this strategy. There’s a long list of features many experts and pundits claimed the original 1.0 iPhone needed but lacked. Ends up it didn’t need any of them. Nice to have is not the same thing as necessary. But things the iPhone did have, which other phones lacked, truly were necessary in terms of providing the sort of great leap forward in the overall experience that Apple was shooting for."
That's all that needs to be said about the issue. Short and sweet.
We dont hate the iPhone, we hate you.
Even PocketIE is an HTML browser rather than WAP, never mind Opera Mobile
How many times to I have to say that iPhone is the first SMARTPHONE to have a full HTML browser. PocketIE was designed for PDAs.
You guys will say anything to avoid accepting the reality that Apple DOES innovate now and again. Calm down, the world won't explode if you accept the truth.
And to all you guy who claim to like the iPhone, why aren't you complaining about people like Look_Around_You and Hamidxa? Those trolls say exactly the same thing every day in numerous posts about Apple and you guys are silent. I point out how many apps the App Store has and you go berserk with rage.
Me thinks you don't really like Apple. You're just saying you do so you look impartial while you bash me.
I think the main misconception about the iPhone is that Apple created it from scratch. It was their first attempt to create a mobile phone. RIM, LG, Samsung, Nokia... they have been creating phones for many years.
I realize that they are just now adding features that have been on lots of smarts phones for a while, but if Apple waited to release the iPhone until they had every possible feature on it, it would still not be out yet.
P.A.C Man, I'm an Apple fan. I love my iPod Touch, I'll trade it for an iPhone 3.0 if it has the rumored features, and I'm really eager to upgrade to a new Mac when Snow Leopard comes out.
And I say: STFU. Please, you're trolling just as much as the Apple-haters, and making us fans look bad.
So praising a product in a post about that product translates to trolling these days? Wow.
@PACMan - you don't know what you're talking about. no one cares. i'm pretty sure you're 13. grow up, go to college, and get back to us when you know something.
@P.A.C Man
What relevance does listing the number of iPhone applications have to do with the iPhone 3.0 software and video recording? I could see if the topic was about the AppStore or Windows mobile store (whatever it's called).
By the way, I'm a huge Apple fan.
@ P.A.C Man
You are such a fanboy!!!
1) App Store has 32000+ apps? I'm sorry but it hasn't!
There are 3491 books which are *books* and not real *apps*.
There are a lot of apps which are only free trial versions of pro apps. Thank to Apple that not allow traditional trial versions with serial numbers like on other platforms. Search *lite* on http://appshopper.com/ and you will find almost 3000 free and lite apps.
32800-3491-3000= around 26000-27000 apps
2) It's the first phone to have over 30,000 apps??? Palm has already over 32000 *real* apps (www.palmgear.com)
3) On Windows Mobile, Palm etc. you can also use Java, emulators, etc. for more apps. Not on the iPhone thanks to Apple policy.
4) What about the quality of apps? iPhone is the only device where you can find so many INutilities like iBeer, iFart, iSteam etc. etc. and so many games and entertainments apps.
Grow up and find a job instead of writing fanboy' posts on Engadget.
Oh come on PAC! Just call it a quits. I do hate the anti-apple trolls, I really do. Please re-read my last sentence again before you continue reading.
Ok. So, your first reply was interesting to read and you did make some good points, but with your second reply you hung yourself. And it quickly got worse after that. If there's something Apple fanboys hate (you should know this) more than anti-trolls it's the Apple fan trolls themselves. Because who cares what the AA trolls says anyway? They're the ones missing out on the products, right? I'm still happy, as should you. You make all other fans look bad.
http://cekirdek.pardus.org.tr/%7Ecaglar/DontFeedTheTroll.jpg
Also, deal with you anger. May it be trouble in the sack, your childhood or something of the two.
iPhone camera under par. Your nuts. Nokia E71 3 meg is no way near the quality of iPhone. For a 2 meg camera, the photos are nice quality.
|=====Typical Apple Hater=====|
Son (running home from school): Mom, Jimmy just got an iPhone and it looks really cool! Can I get it for Christmas this year?!!!!
Mom: No, son, I was talking to Mary from church this past Sunday, and her boy wants one too. They had to switch cell phone carriers in order to get it for him! There is NO WAY we're paying those cancellation fees just so you can have a fancy phone.
Son: BUT MOMMMMMM
Mom: Go upstairs and do your homework!
...(Son runs upstairs and browses Engadget)...
Engadget: "iPhone 3.0 video recording interface, compass support spotted? (Update: voice dialing, too)"
Son: ...I KNOW WHAT I'LL DO!!! (typing) "I highly doubt the video will be any good, considering how under-par the camera is on current iPhones!"
Commence flame war.
Despite PACMan's idiocy, I'm glad iPhone users are getting feature upgrades. It must have been frustrating for him especially, pretending these features weren't important or desired. But now he can pretend like Apple invented them too and call them "revolutionary".
Seriously though, I'm glad to see iPhone catching up to Android. I hope the iPhone surpasses Android someday because that means Android will have to react, which = more functionality for all! Isn't competition great?
Notice that all the Anti-Apple people get a free ride by these so-called friends of Apple. Really, really sad.
LOL the iPhone is revolutionary hands down. Get over it. Your amateur opinion counts for nothing. When major publications name the iPhone the most significant invention of the 21st century thus far, I tend to trust them more than a bunch of whiners stuck in their Sprint contracts.
Exactly.
Bitch all you want guys, the iPhone is taking over the market.
@ John
ROTFL!!!
Your Apple-fanboy opinion counts for even less of nothing!
Voice Dialing, Video Recording, Copy and Paste...
Why is Apple coping Microsoft's Windows Mobile??
@P.A.C Man
What was the purpose of spamming the app list when this post had nothing to do with apps in the first place? Plus you weren't replying to anyone. Just meaningless propaganda.
Umm, guys.... I hate to agree with P.A.C. Man, because fanboyism is so unattractive (coming from a long-time Mac-centric person...)
BUT, half the replies to tell PACMan to STFU actually use the quotes he posted that Anti-Apple people use (should've had features, "dumb phone", "finally has", etc...) I'm hoping it is intentional irony and not just ignoring the fact that someone most people don't like has called you out, and you reply by responding in the way the caller-outer has predicted.
Predicting hardware upgrades and software updates from a company that does both of these on a regular, consistent basis (iPhones in June, Pro stuff at WWDC, iPods in September....) is not news, it's just paying attention.
Related: I predict new iPods this fall. Quote that.
@jimmy
P.A.C. man listed all the arguments against the iPhone that are still valid
I don't see how he succesfully "called anyone out"
i think he mistakenly called himself out
/Facepalm
I'm an Apple fanboy P.A.C. Check my posts. Regardless, stupid shit like what you're pulling is pissing all of us off. Even me.
The number of apps has NO relation to what was posted by Engadget. Even if it was about the App Store or something, then make sure they're talking about how many apps are in the store and not just Skype or whatever before you pull out the numbers.
It makes no sense doing it randomly like that.
"Dude, I heard the iPhone will be getting video recording! Sweet"
"Yeah man, and a compass!"
*You join*
"You know the App Store has 26456364378464637838 apps?"
See? And if you didn't post that, people wouldn't be assholes to you. Think before you post.
I have a feeling this will be only useful in the next iPhone, forcing those that want decent video to upgrade.
Yeah it will be useful because this new innovation is amazing, i wonder if all of the next iphone 'wanna be' devices have this new video recording feature.
/end sarcasm
It might not be new, but it will definitely be better than your crap-phone's video capture capabilities.
If it can auto focus, the lens is going to be much better than the current iPhone.
People that wants more mega pixels are just clueless. 2 mega pixels is more than enough. If you think your camera can do better because it shoots 3, 5 mega pixels, I'll tell you that a 0.5 mega pixels image from a Nikon D3 will still be 100 times better than your 5 mega pixels camera phone image.
about time.
I thought Apple had video. Wow...so, everytime I shot video using my HTC, an iPhone user behind me has been lusting (in quite) my phone's capability.
@roach
Don't be silly, not everyone needs/wants video ;]
Oh weird, I've had Qik video for about forever now. Uploads right to the site when I'm done. Even works decently on EDGE even though it's not supposed to. CRAZY.
my old phone took video and i have a flip camera, i can count the number of times i used those combined on one hand
yeah, go ahead and add in a lot of features because they could be useful once or twice, but no, i am not jealous or lusting over your htc winblows phone
well josh, some people use it a lot. and it's not like it's even a remotely complicated feature: you take a picture, fraction of a second later you take another one, and another, and another, and string them together. not sure why it took apple almost two years to get this completely standard feature out. video isn't just standard for smartphones. it's standard for any phone with a camera.
oh, and saying "winblows" makes you look like a moron.
if some people value taking video so highly, some people shouldn't have gotten the iphone to start with...there's nothing i hate more than people who know what they are getting into, then bitch about it later - it's your own fault...and if you still got the phone anyway and couldn't deal, jailbreaking has been an option for a long time
and yeah, i'm sorry windows mobile is doing great, they are selling like hotcakes, htc can't even keep up with demand...oh wait...
http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/06/htc-first-quarter-earnings-fall-a-not-awesome-30-percent/
android, blackberry, and iphone are where it's at - and like i said, its great they are finally adding features, but no, i have never been jealous of people with LG flip phones or shitty windows mobile just because they could upload their boring grainy phone videos to youtube and get 12 views from their moron friends
1. i never said i personally needed video. i said some people. and maybe those people thought the iphone was still worth it even though it didn't have video capability. but do they not have a right to complain? any product has plenty of room for improvement. also, i don't feel like jailbreaking because then i have less to worry about.
2. i never even mentioned windows mobile. don't know why you're bringing it up. irrational fanboi hate for MS?
3. "boring grainy phone videos?" lol the iphones pictures are hardly any better than my old RAZR's .3 MP cam. the iphone has one of the worst cameras of any smartphone, if you can call it that. and who said they have to upload to youtube? maybe they just want to put them on facebook for just friends to see.
stop being such a prick.
Hey maveric101, it's okay to be jealous of other people's iPhones. Sorry you can only afford a bargain-bin RAZR.
dumbass. i own an iphone. i said "my old RAZR," as in it crapped out last August (probably because it got dunked in water one too many times).
go ahead, keep 'em coming. i can crap on your moronic comments all day long.
Great, another lame iPhone hater that claims he has an iPhone, as if owning one somehow makes his shitty arguments more valid.
http://i44.tinypic.com/2dl0p4i.png
that enough proof for you? screenshot direct from my iphone.
just because i own the phone doesn't mean i shouldn't criticize it. and all my arguments are perfectly valid and logical, unlike yours.
hmm..... 8mpx camera with a sub-HD video recording, if so i would be very interested. but as usual from Apple, that would be the year after.
Or hopefully in 10 years or so when they've solved the "shitty optics on cellphones problem". There's no point adding 8 Mpx to a phone because the shitty optics will fuck it up. If they can get the optics right, 5 Mpx should be more than enough. Wouldn't say no to 720p recording though, but somehow I doubt that's realistic.
Omnia HD, anyone?
Wow a phone with video recording! How impressive!
So "me too"
So "Copy cat"
So "late to the party"
So "cant come up with something original"
Completely agree apple are full of surprises, on the forefront of mobile technology it must be said, first copy and paste, a heart attacking MMS and now this! Whatever will they think of next? FM radio??!?? slow down apple its not the year 3000 just yet.
So just because they're late with these features, they shouldn't even bother?
OK...
Yeah, because NOTHING else the iPhone does is innovative or groundbreaking! Get real, haters, and get over your "copy and paste" comments. When your phone has 30,000 apps and counting, then we'll talk.
"So just because they're late with these features, they shouldn't even bother?
OK..."
NOW YOU CLOWNS DEICED TO BRING THIS UP???
How many fucking times have people been trying to hammer this into the thick skulls of Apple fans when they were bashing everything on the market that adopted some feature some Apple product already had?
Maybe now some of you will finally get it. Now go forth and teach other
Apple fans this awesomeness!
you do have to understand the fanboi mentality......
Wow.. The nerd fighting is seriously pathetic. Apple has NEVER been "innovative" as far as adding crazy new capabilities. They've ALWAYS been about taking existing technologies and making them better, "finishing" them if you will. They've always been conservative about features and spent the majority of time on usability. Has Apple EVER had the most bleeding edge specs in their computers? Did the iPod have every feature that every other player did at the time (how long did it take to add video when many other players already had)? Have they EVER touted the iPhone as the swiss-army-knife of cell phones, including every feature under the sun? NOOO! They're selling point has ALWAYS been "it just works" across their whole product line.
All these people apparently so pissed off about "apple fans" rubbing other devices' lack of features in their face are full of shit because there isn't an apple device under the sun that touts "feature superiority". The only shit talking I see on this site is against Apple devices.
@earthlingdave
Well the Pre can now run Palm OS apps, which number over 30,000 - no fart apps included.....
So yeah - my phone that hasn't been released yet has more apps than your iPhone.......
"All these people apparently so pissed off about "apple fans" rubbing other devices' lack of features in their face are full of shit because there isn't an apple device under the sun that touts "feature superiority". The only shit talking I see on this site is against Apple devices."
You obviously dont read this site very much.
even some of the staff writers do the same thing!
Unbelievable that anyone is actually stupid enough to actually try to paint Apple as a victim.
I have to tip my hat to you.
Are you kidding? Do YOU ever read the site? It's hard to find an article written by Engadget without a few smartass comments sprinkled in and EVERY SINGLE ONE is riddled with people going on about their "3 year old ____ doing that!!".
The ONLY times I've seen other devices bashed in when they are truly horrible. Just because you can't give the iPhone credit for what it's accomplished, doesn't mean that everyone who can is biased. You seem to have this delusional theory that the iPhone is horrible in every way and anyone who disagrees is a "fanboy".
That makes you more biased than any "apple fan".
I think it could be useful, but only with plenty of light. My camera is horrid in low light situations.
Wow apple is adding compass?? Maybe HTC and Google should sue them.
Yeah right.
Apple invented the compass.
You ever notice how it's always the idiot Apple-bashers who accuse Apple of claiming they invented everything? The Apple fanboys are never the ones claiming that Apple invented anything. Yes, that's how stupid the Apple haters here are. They have to make shit up in order to hate on Apple.
"You ever notice how it's always the idiot Apple-bashers who accuse Apple of claiming they invented everything? "
Nope. But we do notice how it's always the idiot Apple fanatics who accuse everyone else of "stealing" Apple's ideas.
Ideas that we find out Apple never invented.
HTC should definitely sue. Since their super-featured, iPhone-killing handsets aren't selling, they'd better try and get some money any way they can. HTC Touch Diamond and Touch Pro....pffft.
http://www.mobileburn.com/news.jsp?Id=6769
@Zak... you're a dumdum... with a capital 'B'
Look_Around_You - Really? I know you think I'm an Apple fanboy, can you show me where I ever said anything like that? Or are you just full of shit like every other Apple hater here? No don't bother to answer that, I already know the answer.
MJZimmer - That's just sad. You call yourself an Apple hater? Try harder next time, buddy.
Just ignore them, Zak, they're just jealous bitches. Why waste your time? They read from the same Anti-Apple talking points every post.
"can you show me where I ever said anything like that? "
Do you really want to go on record and say that your fellow Apple fans HAVE NOT SAID STUFF LIKE THIS?
I fucking DARE you to say that they haven't.
Look_Around_You - Are you blind, or just stupid? I said show me where I said it. Not where somebody else said it. Me. Show me where I said it. Because either you put your money where your foot is, I mean your mouth, or you admit I'm not an Apple fanboy. That's a nice corner you painted yourself into there, genius. Now it's time to either put up or shut up.
@Hamidxa,
clicked on your profile. just wow.
Zak:
I dare you to show where Look_Around_You said that YOU said what you're trying to prove Look_Around_You said you said.
superhobo - You're as dumb as he is. The whole point is that he thinks I'm an Apple fanboy, but he can't prove that I said any of the things he claims Apple fanboys always say. You see the problem there? So he either needs to prove I said what he says Apple fanboys always say, or he has to admit I'm not an Apple fanboy. Seems pretty simple to me, but then I don't ride the short bus to school like you guys do.
He even said he hates hypocrisy and illogical BS. That's extra funny because of how hypocritical that statement is.
This is what i posted:
"Nope. But we do notice how it's always the idiot Apple fanatics who accuse everyone else of "stealing" Apple's ideas."
From this Zak claims I said:
"Zak is an Apple fanboy that says...."
He goes on a tangent to distract from my comment he doesnt want to answer.
Draw your own conclusions.
When did he call you an Apple fanboy anyway?
LOL Apple might steal ideas, but then other companies steal the entire thing. That's how it always works. JUST LOOK AT THE MEIZU M8 FOR PROOF. A TOTAL FUCKING RIPOFF.
Also, LOL at the guy who's so cool that he bashes the iPhone for lack of FM radio.
I totally believe the iPhone will have decent quality video recording on the next gen iPhone hardware. BUT this is the fakest "shopped" image I have seen!
we should set up a cage match
Well Apple...you're making me REALLY regret buying that Motorola v300 Almost 5 years ago, when I could have held out for iPhone 3.0 and got the same ground breaking features!
@Zak:
Lol, too true.
Warning Warning! Apple overheating! Bail! FTL! oh jeezuz my eyes!
Zak:
You defend the iPhone when it doesn't have it, you defend the iPhone when it finally gets it. You know what that means?
It means you're an Apple Appologist.
superhobo - Really? That's the best you can do? Okay, fine. Show me where I defended the iPhone's lack of video recording.
Oh right, you can't. Which means you're just talking out your ass like every other Apple hating monkey posting in here today. Good job.
Lol, no one even mentioned video recording in this thread, Failboy
they've already shown the compass app in some of their commercials. i was wondering how exactly it worked. especially since in the comercial they were tilting it side to side (while vertical) and the direction on the company was changing.
That's not a compass app, is a level meter... you know, so you can make sure that when you hang pictures on the wall they will be straight.
@Brian
i think he's talking about this compass app (the first one in the commercial)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6ebtf3u58I
Revolutionary!
Give me a break with all the sarcastic comments about Apple. First, do you really believe Apple released the iPhone without having these "features" already set and mapped out, only to keep them under wraps for future releases in order to drive sales (it's called business strategy)? Secondly, sure other smart phones have had these features, however have they had cut/copy/paste, MMS, etc on a multi-touch device? As a developer I have seen/used 3.0 beta 2, and the implementation of these features is seamless and much more effective than their jailbroken counterparts. Apple is not about getting it out there first, Apple is more concerned with getting it right. Personally, I'd rather have a smart phone that works well than a Windows or Palm device.
STFU
