I find it ironic latest Microsoft ads knife at Apple for being expensive "in this economy", but then require hundreds ( thousands? ) of dollars in hardware upgrades to use Windows 7.
Which is it Ballmer? The economy dictates that you shouldn't spend money on frivolous things like a $700 graphics card -- or -- "It's 2009, time to leave XP in the past"?
I forget how long XP has been out by now, but it is sure as hell archaic. The whole point of windows 7 is that its not meant to be quite so resource hungry as Vista - hell my NC10 runs it like a dream.
If your using hardware that doesnt support Windows 7 you should be upgrading regardless.
As i said above im using an Atom processor with 1gb of ram and GMA950. That is worse hardware than what was being sold in 2004. Therefore you should have no problems running 7 on anything built in 2004 or above.
If you have a business that bought 1,000 computers, you know that you will have to pay $$$ to upgrade then at some point.
And what upgrades would most PCs need if they aren't over 5 years old? I got 7 on some stuff that were barely running XP. Most businesses that didnt go to the University of Scrooge McDuck should already have computers that can run it if they want.
If your rig is from 2003 then, yeah, I think it's time to upgrade if you want to run Windows 7. Btw, I've run Windows 7 on a 5yo AthlonXP w/ 1GB of Ram and while it was way too slow for Gaming, the speed was more than acceptable for other, lighter tasks like Web browsing and word processing.
Wait, what? My Pentium 4 northwood 2.4ghz, nd 1gb ddr1, on a agp 7600gt ran w7 just fine. Granted, gaming was lols, and HD play-back wasn't very good. But it ran it. If you've bought a new'ish system in the past few years, Windows 7 should run on it. If you want steller gaming, and 1080p playback, expect to spend to get the buff needed.
I just installed windows 7 on my 6 yr old desktop (that's 2003) and it's running beautifully, furthermore native sata driver support 1-ups the "almighty" xp which I had problems installing the drivers.
I also have a dell laptop with vista running and I have 0 issues with it.
Some technologies are excess, but this OS is proving to be progress.

Ok... Has this not got a little old by now?

Please show me an operating system that requires a $70 much less $700 graphics cards.

A new $300 netbook runs it just fine. Now shut up.

@Look_around_you: Businesses don't buy 1000 computers, they lease them.
