Video: 23 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295s packed into one system, "overkill" exemplified
Ha, and you thought paying hundreds of dollars for a NIC was insane. For one reason or another (likely "another"), AtlasFolder has loaded in 23 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295 graphics cards into a single server rig, and while only 17 were installed at the time of this video (he's waiting for a few nuts and bolts before installing the others), we're already amazed. Call us crazy, but something such is this definitely isn't what NVIDIA had in mind when it revived SLI. Per usual, the vid's past the break.
[Thanks, P]
Update: Turns out this is a GPU Folding Farm at Stanford. Impressive.

can it run a high-detailed, high-res Crysis ?
Just a little overkill.
Just a tad...
There's no kill like overkill.
I told you I was overkill!
No overkill when using it to try and solve the mysteries of disease.
What about killtacular, killtrocity, killimanjaro, killtastrophe, killpocalypse and killionaire though?
:(
Nope its more like
"MmMmMmonster KILL kill kill!"
To Hell with Crysis....
That thing could fold crysis.
overkill!
Yes, but his points per day in Folding@Home must be amazing. He would likely be one of the top donors if that were what he used this for.
i don't want to see that powerbill ^^
That's exactly what it's used for.
This rig actually belongs to Atlas Folding and this guy just stole the video & edited it.. Total Hoax.
Documented with links on VizWorld.com http://www.vizworld.com/2009/04/23-geforce-295-gtxs-in-a-single-pc/
But will in play Crisys?
Did you even watch the video?
It does as you can see in the video.
If you're gonna make a Crysis joke, at least spell it right. Sheesh.
Can I play Crysis within Crysis? Can I play SECOND Second Life?
But will it blend?
@superfresh
Yes, but you need to apply through Dwight Schrute.
As much as you were able to play Maniac Mansion inside Day Of The Tentacle!
----Those were the times, folks!
I signed up for Second Life about a year ago. Back then, my life was so great I literally wanted a second one. Absolutely everything was the same... except I could fly.
I always find it irritating to go YouTube and find an otherwise interesting video loaded with crappy music. Why people do this all the time? I don't get it. I rather hear the noise of cooling fans than stupid music. A narration would be nice. But, please, no music. I don't care how awesome you think the song is. Unless it's some sort of audio or music production, keep that nonsense out of your video.
Agreed!
Though, it is a good song.
It's just so easy with AudioSwap...quite annoying
Its called mute... or alternatively you can jam some firecrackers in your ears and light. Better yet, kill yourself...
That song is good, the video was really horrible... you dont see much of anything. Id like to see the more of the install process and of course some benchmarks!
"david" you're not very smart are you? "better yet, kill yourself" is the best suggestion you were able to come up with?
My point is that an interesting video can easily be turned into a annoyance when the owner decides to put cheesy music to it. He/she can add more value to the video by adding a little narration as to what we're seeing, benefits, costs, challenges, and so forth. Also, the sound of cooling fans could also give us an idea as to how much room noise is added by addition of additional cards.
@Rob
Not everything in life needs to play out like an instructional manual. Maybe its just a teaser and the people are building a site to explain what they're going to do with the rig. And actually I think I am smart, smart enough to realize that taste in music is relative and just because you think a song sucks doesn't make it so. Honestly I don't like the song either, I'm just not big enough of a jerk off to comment about it. I am however a big enough jerk off to call you out.
this is the backend of that onlive service?
Is your backend the OnLive service?
they are gonna need a few dozen more.
Without support for PCI-Express multiroot IOV, you can't give a vm direct access to somethign like a PCI-express card yet, thus onlive is still likely going to require a 1:1 sever to user mapping. I suppose they could technically get around it by running sessions concurrently on the same base OS they will still have a giant compatibility mountain to climb.
Everyone has been talking about the infastructure and lag being the biggest problem for onlive, but IMO the technical challenge of building their datacenters cost effectively is going to be a bigger issue.
Is this like the OnLive server room?
Few problems come to mind, didn't nvidia have a maximum of 8 devices or so supported in their drivers? And would not the PCIE buses be saturated with intercommunicating not leaving room to actually do what it is suppose to?
And won't the powerlines melt? And won't this be a perfect excuse for obama to justify taking your bonus back?
I think we just found Skynet.
I need to rename my server now, calling anything skynet after watching that doesnt feel right.
Please combine this with the 24 samsung ssd raid setup *droool*
the Crysis on video is only as crisp as the video would go =(
I don't know that I'd call that "one system" considering its 5 of them right now. Its a lot of nvidia cards in one rack thats for sure. Why no quadroplex?
Yea, this is more of a home render farm than "one system"
See, OnLive is possible!
That most certainly is not a SINGLE server. It's ~6 motherboards on a rack mount...
If the video poster hadn't already posted several vids of his other PCs, then I would be inclined to say that this is aimed to be a small GPGPU cluster for a university.
In any case, I can not see the usability as a gaming rig...
as stated above.
this is absolutely pointless. gain == nothing.
actually, i take that back.... its not completely pointless. he single handedly helped nvidia reach their profit margin this quarter.
I'm glad you wrote that comment - my first thought was 'why?'
You're right, it's a Hoax. It's documented on VizWorld , it's a Folding@Home rig, he stole the video.

"That most certainly is not a SINGLE server. It's ~6 motherboards on a rack mount..."
Shhhhhh. Don't let them know the mouse has more than one button...you'll really freak them out....
Oh, the miracle of cluster computing.
It must be nice to have more money than you know what to do with :-P
