Video: WiiSpray lets virtual taggers spray without fear of the man
When we first caught a whiff of the virtual aerosol action promised by Martin Lihs' thesis at Bauhaus University, dubbed WiiSpray, we were intrigued, but we never figured the end product would be this impressive. Lihs has since posted up a short teaser trailer showing the wall in action, controlled by a modified Wiimote controller, with results that should make even the most law-abiding artist smile. The video below shows an extensive color picker tool, interactive stencils, and what looks to be a perfectly accurate spray pattern -- and it should be, as the whole is getup is sponsored by Montana Cans. We're not sure what's next for this technology, but hopefully Lihs and his creation will be bombing a more public location soon.

Interesting idea.
On a slightly related note, there's some great graffiti out there. Its a shame that 95% of it is people writing obscenities on walls.
This just brings us closer to Photoshop Hero as foretold by the prophets at the Penny Arcade.

Very cool, but, where is Mario Paint WII edition?
The ideal controller for the next Jet Set Radio! (*if only*)
OMG if they bring back Jet Grind Radio this would be awesome!!
Someone has to be reading this. This will be the biggest hit next to Guitar Hero. Think of the millions they'll make with this. I'd even buy one.
I have a feeling that soon after the release of wii spray, the amount of tags on walls will increase by 15% world wide; and then some soccer mom will sue Nintendo because her son mixed up a real paint can for the wiispray.... hmmmm
Looks like a cool product though.
Cool idea, but it looks like it would only would work is if you had projector? I don't own a Wii, so I'm not sure how it would work with a TV.
I'm not sure how it works at all. Where's the sensor bar, is that in the roof or something? Just seems like the remote's pointing the wrong way. How did the stencils work?
And isn't this an art project rather than a product? I.e. it doesn't have to work on your TV.
Looks pretty cool anyhow!
you couldn't really do it with a projector because your shadow would block the projection and this in on a computer not a wii, because i saw a mouse cursor.
If that's not a projector, then what is it then? And you're right, I do see a cursor.
You don't need to see the cursor to know it's a computer... it's a touchscreen.. projectors don't let you grab and manipulate images.
Touchscreen huh, well that makes it even more unattainable then. Still cool though, I have been following this for a while now.
hey guys. i'm pretty sure it's rear projected with an ir camera near the projector to detect the stencil. similar to microsoft surface.
maybe its something similar to the microsoft surface. rear mounted projector with some type of technology that allows object interaction. maybe multitouch?
fail. i forgot to activate my comment and someone beat me to it. lol
Yeah it can be rear-projection.... you can pick up multi-touch with rear projection or front projection in theory
As for this working on a regular TV, the Wii can already detect the orientation of the WiiMote so and can detect button presses even if the WiiMote is not pointing toward the sensor bar. So if you had that spray can attachment you could do this on a regular television. Perhaps the Wii MotionPlus would provide for an extra level of sensitivity to get the spraying patterns just right.
What would be really cool is if you shake the can, the WiiMote vibrates and the speaker makes the sound of the ball bearing inside of a real spray paint can.
I'm loving this, but what if you have a smaller tv? Seems like it would be a waste and difficult to spray on something that small.
Awesome. That is so cool, I could have a blast for about 1/2 hour. But then what?
go outside?
Exactly. Looks fun. I'd like to try it. Once.
I promise you its addictive, incredibly addictive
Geezus H Christ this is totally gay, go tag a real wall with real paint. Grow a pair.
Forget Jet Grind Radio, gimme this for Getting Up!
Coo idea, but they could've at least gotten some talented taggers to demo the product...
Wow, that's one way to take Johnny Chung Lee's ideas (innovate then) and make a profit. I certainly hope he's being reimbursed for this.
His idea was to set the wiimote down and manipulate stuff using ir. This is actually putting the wiimote in your hand which is nintendo's original idea.
I LOVE this....I just sent the link to my friend Wkinteract check him out!
who do you think you are? with those things... all up in here.
I remember when little boys would go outside and play punch ball (the first sewer was home, the other sewer cover was 2nd, the front bumper of the neighbor's caddy was first and the VW rear bumper was 3rd), tag, ring-o-levio, stickball, stoop ball, and a variety of other games. Now, they merely stay stay inside in the Domestic Pods.
Oh, come on Sega, this thing is just screaming "New Jet Set Radio!"
Check this link out. Looks very similar.

its amazing how all of the forms of hip hop are being represented in digital/game form. DJ hero will be out soon, DDR for the B-Boys and this for the graff writers. The MC has turned into a rapper, which is wack as hell, so i'm not worried about a rapping game. Anyway... I can only prey that this tool will teach our youths about urban art and expression. I would love to see a game that allows you to learn, create and progress tagging techniques as you play. I think this will lead to a more colorful world
Please make it look like Mortimer Ichabod Pen. I like the space age sound it makes when you draw lines.
Check this out!!

Very cool. But who has a tv screen that big? On like a 46" LCD, I'm not sure if it would be that fun.
