Garmin provides in-dash navigation system for 2011 Grand Cherokee

It's not quite as elaborate as that 12-inch dual-view touchscreen found in the new 2010 Range Rover, but it looks like Chrysler's 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee will come with own its share of in-dash amenities, including a GPS navigation system courtesy of Garmin. That'll be integrated into the same 6.5-inch touchscreen used for Chrysler's Uconnect radio and, of course, will offer everything you'd expect from a standalone GPS unit and then some, including lane assist, speed limit and current speed information, spoken street names, details on nearby points of interest, and even some spiffy customized Chrysler-specific icons. Of course, the vehicle itself also packs a number of other improvements that Chrysler hopes will woo some new customers, but we'll let our friends at Autoblog run those down for you.

Nice but wont becasue to plot a course while driving.
My bigger concern is...would Chrysler survive through 2009
Nice.... but U still wont get laid in this car..
too bad the driving experience still resembles a 1940's German tank
And the reliability resembles a Jeep.
You've obviously never driven a Grand Cherokee. Gas Guzzler...yes, bumpy highway ride...no. I've owned two and except for a few quirky failures (belt for raising/lowering window breaking) they were rock solid.
Actually, the problem was that I DID drive a Grand Cherokee, and almost got out and walked as a better solution. The large roar, with no response when you mash the accelerator, in combination with a unnecessarily spongy suspension is actually not normal. Next time you find yourself with an auto purchase, try ANYTHING else (including a 1940's German tank).
German tanks, on the other hand, don't have a turning circle that's comparable to a dog chasing it's tail!
Seriously, I've seen Wranglers whose wheels are practically parallel to the rest of the car.
haydensq: Was it a 1995 or what? The first gens and the second gen with the V6 had a huge problem with getting out of its own way, but on the other hand, most SUVs designed in the 90s had the same problem. At least the Grand could leave the road and be capable there.
What's the point of buying a gas guzzler these days, unless its your second/weekend car?
There was never much of a point in driving a vehicle with terrible brakes, terrible acceleration, terrible handling, and a huge price tag.
At least driving a cheap POS SUV made sense if you couldn't afford to have another car as a daily driver. The luxo-barge ones attract terrible drivers like a fire attracts moths.
nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!
....
so?
What a waste of a perfectly good GPS
Ya if they don't go bankrupt first.
there will be no 2011 Grand Cherokee
"Of course, the vehicle itself also packs a number of other improvements that Chrysler hopes will woo some new customers, but we'll let our friends at Autoblog run those down for you."
Run over the customers or the number of improvements? :P
Good to see a carmaker wise up and use a *good* GPS system. Garmin owns.
have to wait until 2010, not soon enough.
Why Engaget post this? do they know Chrysler is about to go bankrupt!
Did you know you're an idiot? Sheesh, they're about to get into a partnership with Fiat, they're going to be fine.
Keep the smartass comments to yourselves.
then why bother having a comment section?
Hopefully this will make it. So I can swap one into my truck. I'm putting one of the harmon becker nav units in with the lock pick so hopefully the garmin will work too, hopefully, if they don't change the bus structure.
Oh, and thats not the new on in the pic. Just the HB RER unit.
Yeah but will they let the customer update the maps when new ones come out or will that be another $1000 for a map update? Probably also won't let you use it while the vehicle is in motion either.
Chrysler should give up on making vehicles. They dont ride well, They dont last long, They have crap saftey rateings and they are over priced. They need to get their act together and make a quality vehicle like Ford does. GM are also lagging behind like Chrysler.
You know Chrysler became their own company again just a short time ago, right? And that their reliability ratings have skyrocketed since, right? And for quite some time, they've always been near the top of the safety heap? Why don't you keep you unfounded, useless comments to yourself. If you hate them, you hate them, don't make stuff up to prove a point you don't have.
if they dont go out of biz first
Look at that thing, chrysler really turned the Jeep in to a pussy brand.
Jeep is the best
Now THAT is a good built in GPS unit.
Jeeps don't last? Mine Grand Cherokee just hit 145,000 miles and has zero problems. I expect it to go another 100,000 with proper maintenance. I'm sure I'm not alone. Suspension was really bad when I first bought it, but threw in some Gas-a-shocks and now it hugs the road pretty well.
And then people are surprised to see ridiculous GPS-related car accidents. The placement of this display is sure to take your eyes off the road.
