Nielsen report ranks gaming usage for Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360 consoles

Nielsen's just released their anxiously awaited "State of the Video Gamer" report, and while it's a real page-turner, there aren't exactly any surprises in store for readers. Conducted in December of 2008, Nielsen investigated use of the three major consoles -- the Nintendo Wii, the Xbox 360, and the PS3. The study found that of those three, owners of the Xbox 360 got the most use out of their console -- an average of 11.4 percent of the time for the duration of the poll, while the PS3 came in a close second at 10.6 percent. The original Xbox followed directly behind that with 10.2 percent, while Wii owners gamed a sad 6.8 percent of the time... far less than that of even PS2 owners. The Wii also came in last place in terms of total days used during the poll, with an average of 5 days (PS3 and Xbox 360 users averaged 6.8 and 7.1, respectively). Update: As tangocat (and maveric101) point out in comments, we misread the chart the first time out, mistaking the Xbox stats for the Xbox 360 numbers. We've cleared that up -- good looking out!

WHAT, no Sega Genesis!?!?!?!
sorry to jack the top of the comments, but this is kind of important. from below:
"tangocat @ Apr 8th 2009 7:55PM
As I had said in the Joystiq post, and all of Weblogs, Inc keeps making an "Oopsie!" with.
"Someone read the charts wrong..
"During that same period, those involved in the study played Xbox 360 10.2 percent and PS3 10.6 percent -- nearly double the Wii average."
If you look at http://blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/stateofvgamer_040609_fnl1.pdf, the 10.2 percent is for the original Xbox. The 360 is actually higher than the PS3 at 11.4%"
The PS3 is NOT top dog in the report."
the 360 beat the PS3 in everything but average daily number of sessions.
@maveric101
As I said, Playstation is the top dog compare to the Xbox.
comments4cheap:
you want to actually back up that comment? indeed, your comments ARE cheap.
Thanks, maveric101.
It was actually quite ironic and funny seeing both news articles get such "SEE WE WIN!" responses, when the writers are comparing apples and oranges.
Calm down people...... its just consoles
@maveric101
except television usage, goin by that graph playstation 3 users are the biggest daytime tv fans
I don't care about how long a console gets used by other people. As long as I have people to play with in Warhawk, I don't care!
On an odd take, the users of the PS3 has an average age group of 25-34, while the 360 has an average age group of 12-17. Hmm.... I wonder how voice chatting in games is there...
@maveric101
Add up all of Ps sale and Xbox sales and tell me the difference. Talking about ps and xbox. All generations.
@ DR House
Just consoles!? Are you serious man? Cmon! You're talking about the lives of millions of ppl! Can you imagine the catastrophe if all these consoles were taken away?! People would cease to have pointless entertainment. They would actually have to go outside and play! And spend time with the family...and have a job....and all that. :P
This post is in no way meant to offend or degrade anyone. It is just sarcasm so calm down there dude. I'm not trying to feed the trolls...but I am just poking a little fun at the world today. ;) I realize that there are only a few gamers who don't have jobs or quality time with their families and so on. I enjoy gaming from time to time...but it saddens me to see the money and time wasted on "pointless" entertainment. It has it's time and place yes....but alot of ppl/kids use it excessively....
Anyways...sorry for the rant. :P
I think that once you can spend your own money on gaming and a console then there's nothing wrong with it. When parents just buy a console for a kid so he'll shut up and stare at a screen, then you have a problem.
MY CONSOLE IS SO BETTER THAN YURS BLEHHHH
kids these days.
Engadget's writeup is rather misleading; it makes no mention of the age groups surveyed. Here's the age breakdown from TFA: PS3 - 25-34; PS2 - 12-17; 360 - 12-17; Xbox - 12-17; Wii - 6-11; Gamecube - 6-11. Are you seriously telling me that the attention spans and overall gamer-ness of preteens and teenagers are comparable?
PS3 doesn't have any games.
Not as many as the iPhone, at least.
I don't know what you're talking about, but I'm enjoying my seventeen games thank you very much!
Yeah, that's why it got the most use.
If they included viewing Blu-Ray movies, then this really isn't a surprise. People who love movies enough to invest in a HD player and TV are going to log some hours.
I use it to watch all my DVDs, BDs and pirated movies, so it still gets some use. Haven't played a game on it in awhile though.
most of the games are online
By your logic, only the Wii has games.
the PS3 and 360 share a large portion of their libraries. i prefer the 360's exclusives over the PS3's, though, so i
Lol, just kidding :p
I actually prefer PS3 over 360 because of the exclusives, free online, and blu-ray.
It's called "State of the Video Gamer" and they included the Wii? I think that most gamers don't turn toward the Wii when it's time to play. The Wii is more seen like a kid toy or a family entertainment system. The Wii isn't for real gamers according to many.
I play the Wii with my friend, we play Super Smash Bros. Brawl, its a pretty fun game till my friend gets bored of losing.. Anyway, my point is that, the Wii is a console that gamers would go to, if A.) Their so bored of the other two consoles and/or B.) They like the Wii..?
Just pretend, there is no spoon.. or B.
Exactly. I see the Wii is the modern day board game and is something that's only played you've got company. The console is only entertaining to play as long as the fun last which is only for half an hour or so until you get tired or the novelty of swinging your arm has run out.
Nothing wrong with the console though. It's just that in the long run the Wii is not worth investing in as there are were few games that enlighten or challenge a gamer the same way Halo, Metal Gear Solid or Command and Conquer does.
WHAT, no Dreamcast!?!?!?!
WHAT, no NES?!?!?!
What? No Colecovision?
What, no pong?
What, no Fairchild Channel F?
hay guys what about the Sega Megadrive? Streets of rage 2 and Street Fighter 2 guys. cant beat it.
The Wii only came in last because grandmas go to bed at early and little kids have a curfew.
Flame on!
My Wii is sitting on my entertainment center.
It hasn't been used in weeks.
My PS3 is getting TONS of use, though. TONS!!!
And to those who say it has no games, I beg to differ.
I didn't know you could measure hours in weight.
Noun 1. tons - a large number or amount;
asshat
noun
(cattag2, Internet, slang): asshole.
Etymology: From the slang expression "Having one's head up one's ass,"
wtf?! swallow a dictionary did we, asshole!
it certainly does have a lot of 360 ports. enjoy!
The daily usage numbers are an indirect correlation to the casual-ness of the console. Shocker.
Heh, I looked at a bit of the article.
The only time x360 usage is above ps3 usage is for a few minutes at around 3pm. That must be when they all get home from school. :P
I was thinking the same thing, and they say that Ps3 has nothing but obnoxious teenagers. Looks who wrong now.
Let me know how it feels to take that dumb comment back.
As I had said in the Joystiq post, and all of Weblogs, Inc keeps making an "Oopsie!" with.
"Someone read the charts wrong..

The PS3 is NOT top dog in the report.
Xbox 360 @ 11.4
PS3 @ 10.6
That's 11 (11.4 -> 11) hours and 11 (10.6 -> 11) hours respectively if you round them off.
Ps is the top dog compare to the Xbox. No generations specified just the consoles.
The PS3 and PS2 both lose out to the Xbox 360 and original Xbox with the exception of User Min % for the 360 vs PS3. It's just that these websites keep reporting it incorrectly, and no one is actually reading the PDF:
Usage Min % Active User % Avg Session Mins Avg Usage Days Daily Avg Num Sessions Console User Type TV User Type Age Group Income:
PlayStation 3 8.1 10.6 64 6.8 2.42 Heavy Medium 25-34 $75K+
PlayStation 2 28.3 9.6 71 5.5 1.98 Heavy Heavy 12-17 $75K+
Xbox 360 17.4 11.4 78 7.1 2.15 Heavy Light 12-17 $75K+
Xbox 8.4 10.2 77 5.6 1.94 Heavy Heavy 12-17 $75K+
Rounding has nothing to do with this.
dhv217:
if the numbers were inaccurate they would have rounded them. but they didn't. just face it that the PS3 got beat by .8%
lol sorry Laura gave me the credit for the correction. just know it's thanks to you. :D
I haven't seen my younger brother ( who was the one that wanted a Wii in the first place) use the Wii in a good month or two now. He played Super Smash Bros. Brawl and a bit of Super Mario Galaxy for a while initially after getting it and now I just see him back to playing with the PS3. I've barely touched the Wii except for playing Wii fit which is suppose to be for exercise so that's not exactly "gaming". I use my PS3 every week and it's mainly for gaming, movies and browsing the internet are secondary.
And to those xbots who say there's no games, time to grow up and come up with a new chant, there are games now it's not 2007 anymore.
