The only way you're getting proper tethering is if you want to pony up an extra ~$20 (though most likely ~$30) per month.
You really can't go into this just expecting a free lunch. I mean.... we're talking about wireless carriers, here. They have some of the most greedy, backwards business practices around!

Apple already said they're working on tethering. They're launching it world-wide, meaning they have to work with all the carriers world-wide where the iPhone is sold to make sure iPhone tethering works with their network.

What about tethering???? Why oh why is everything possible with every other damn phone impossible with THIS one?!?!
It's the operators that try to block tethering IIRC.
On that note I have my iTouch tethered to my E90.
Because some networks give "unlimited" internet with the iphone..

That is why tethering would be great. Use the iphone's 'unlimited' internet on your net/notebook while out and about without having to find a hotspot.

my buddy has tethering working perfectly fine on beta 3.0 on at&t
