Nintendo's Iwata wants DS video on-demand through the Wii
Nintendo's Wii, while thoroughly trouncing the competition in overall hardware sales, is way behind both the PS3 and Xbox 360 when it comes to media playback. Nintendo is about to take a step forward there with its Wii no Ma Channel, which will offer a variety of on-demand video including cartoons and other family programming -- in other words lots and lots of Pokemon. Now Nintendo President Satoru Iwata is indicating that he wants that video to come to the DS, too, saying "If the Wii and the DS are connected, it should be possible to download video through the Wii and take it with you on the DS." He also said Nintendo is "going to do it differently in a Nintendo-like way." Given the "different" way that Nintendo handles online play compared to the competition, expect to be punching in 16-digit codes in every time you get an urge to watch someone else catch 'em all. I hope they'll use the built-in memory of the DSi instead of rendering this feature useless by making it Download-"don't turn it off"-Play...
And I'm pretty sure they will leave their Nintendo DS Lite user-base out of this. I prefer my AceKard 2 anyway.
it's funny, they have been behind the mark in many technologies for years now...yet still ahead in the market!
Yay! It will be almost as powerful as my modded DS! Hint: If users hack their devices to do sometihng, there's probably a market for it. Too bad there's already a plethora of devices that do this. Nintendo missed the mark.
Well, they are "innovative", and by innovative I mean they make gimmicky peripherals that only work for 2 or 3 games, but cost about half the price of the actual console.
they're trying to mimic latest apple's business model and hence make profit
It streams moneh!
No matter what they do the Wii is still a 480p unit. The world is going hi-def and Nintendo is trying to squeeze new features into it? Give it up and just bring out the Wii II.
Seeing as how Nintendo works, they'll be 4 more Wii revisions, 6 new color schemes, and a couple "special edition Wiis" before we'll ever see a Wii 2.
I'll agree, video on-demand in glorious SD is essentially useless.
Oh so this is why you can't play videos of the SD card.
Can't you already do this with Sony gear, right now?
anyone see sort of a resemblance to shigeru miyamoto?
inb4 'all asians look the same'
Bah. How cares. I bought a Wii to play games, not watch videos.
eh, I have my homebrew I can just format videos like I do and play them, and i wont have to worry about keeping it a G rating
to keep it very nintendo esch, they ought to limit resolution and lower color depth of all videos (nintendoize) all of the videos, sort of like when people first exported B&W videos for the Palm Pilots in the past. I remember..
