T-Mobile market testing terrible names for the HTC Magic / Sapphire
We're not sure why T-Mobile would be market-testing names other than "G2" for its upcoming HTC Sapphire, but it apparently is -- and if these leaked slides are to be believed, it's not doing so well on the ideas front. Seriously: "T-Mobile Genius 3G with Google" and "Prism 3G with Google" both trade in the well-known G-series branding for banal anonymity, and "myTouch 3G with Google" just sounds like a skin disease that's gone from bad to worse. Interestingly, "T-Mobile G3" is also on the list, which makes us wonder if there's a less-drastic G2 model in the works, but that's pure speculation on our part -- what we do know is that we'd take Vodafone's Magic branding over any of these other sad options in a heartbeat.

.....................really t-mobile??
How many internet capable phones DON'T have Google? O.o
How many have had google spearheading the writing of the software?
Irregardless, the name of the software is Android, not Google. They could have said "With Android from Google".
irregardless?
Android phones are always marketed "with Google". for example: "T-Mobile G1 with Google" or "HTC Dream with Google"
Always? The G1's been out for like 6 months...
Weird how phone companies never mentioned 3G in their marketing at all until the iPhone 3G came out.
Just saying.
Ummm I remember very clearly Helio using 3G in a couple of their advertisements. :p
SHUT UP. JUST SAYING.
or it could be related to the fact that t mo just rolled out their 3G network so they're trying to market it as much as possible...
Go stand in the corner and hang your head in the shame for spouting off that fanboy crap.
Thank you.
Oh shit... but they're not a phone company.
Sorry everyone... my apologies. Apologies all around.
myTouch 3G w/ Google - Awesome
lol. myTouch 3G. anyone else read this and think "ooo girl. you touch my tra la la"

:P
No.
no
Just who the hell do they think they are... Microsoft?
I'm sure the motivation for this change in marketing is similar to, if not exactly the same as, the motivation XBox had when naming their new console XBox 360, rather than X Box 2. Especially when Playstation was marketing the PS3. Subconscious perception.
You thought the exact same thing I did. If only I responded with my long ass reply (see below) sooner. Oh well.
Lol Mytouch. I can understand why apple didn't call the ipod touch the Itouch.
Theory:
Perhaps they're trying to avoid naming it the G2 because people will think the G1 is inferior.
Recommendation:
Just call it the sapphire, ffs.
Or maybe they don't want to getting in a legal battle with Gatorade.
G2 = phone or sports drink? I certainly can't tell the difference and I think a lot of other consumers will be confused as well. Which is why Gatorade needs to protect its trademark!
It's pretty lame, but it makes sense.
They don't want to confuse dimwitted consumers by tossing a G2 name into the mix. It would lead some to believe that it's referring to the network speed rather than generation of the phone. T-Mobile doesn't want people to start thinking that they're trying to hype a slower phone than the competition when AT&T (and even Verizon) is tossing around "3G" like it's the second coming.
It's exactly how Microsoft named the Xbox 360. They didn't want to name it the Xbox 2, because they knew the PS3 was on everyone's mind. They were aware of the fact that dumb consumers might see Xbox 2 as intrinsically inferior to the PS3 just because the PlayStation has a 3 after it, but the Xbox only has a 2. The route they went allows uninformed people see that they've both got 3+ in their title, so the consumers will figure they're the same generation console and about the same value - or that they Xbox 360 is even better because not only is it 3... it's 3 and 60.
You've got to realize that a lot of marketing is geared to the lowest common denominator. Not everyone reads Engadget and follows technology. They've got to try and keep things simple - or confuse the public in a way that benefits them.
"They don't want to confuse dimwitted consumers by tossing a G2 name into the mix. It would lead some to believe that it's referring to the network speed rather than generation of the phone."
That makes sense. I couldn't figure out why they wouldn't just call it the G2. If that's the case, they should just call it something all together different. Sapphire or Magic with 3G would be fine but I could see where a name like "The T-Mobile G2 with 3G" could be confusing......or catchy. :)
@shawndh
LOL, try saying G2 with 3G ten times fast and if you think that is difficult, try G3 with 3G.
If they're gonna go with the "T-Mobile G3", how about the 3G-G3!!!
Sorry but that sound stupid. IMO. How about TG3?
T-Mobile G3 3G would be a real tongue twister. personally I think it would be wise to avoid the 3G reference.....no need to remind people that you still haven't finished rolling out your 3G network yet.
Actually, visually the G3/3G could play out well, but you're right it does not need to be spoken. At all. Ever.
But I can see an ad where the G3 lettering is there and they play on either the Magic or Prism (granted, Prism reminds me of crappy Geo/Chevy cars) name by reflecting the G3 in a mirror to show the 3G logo, or with a wisp of smoke coming off the G3 that ends up forming the 3G.
Yeah, I work in video and I hate my life.
Or maybe the T-Mobile G3G (pronounced "Tee-Mobile Geg")
The 3GG3 .. pronounced "egg"
or... also pronounced "wtf"
33GGGG3G3G3G3G3G3G3G3G3GGG3GG333???
how about the "TMO-GSM-G2-TOUCH-KEYBOARD-SUCKATNAMES 3G"?????
Isn't it obvious what G3 means? It's a 3G phone, so they're probably just making a name that communicates the fact that it is a G1 sequel with 3G.
The T-Mobile G1 already had 3G.
I think the T-Mobile myChin 3G is a good name considering that stupid malformation on this device.
It doesn't seem to roll off the tongue easily as the word "iPhone".
all these names are stupid
they should just call it
the "super awesome phone,
that beautiful gorgeous wants,
but has no money"
would any body
like to buy a fone for
beautiful gorgeous?
?????????????????
??????????????????
????????????????
How about "White Shite?"
G2 is a patented name of a Gatorade product. T-mobile doesnt want to go there. Also HTC is hesitant to call the device the G2, because it believes that G1 sales will go flat. This stuff has been discussed openly inside T-Mobile walls
You can't patent a name.
You're confusing patents and trademarks and appear not to understand that trademarks apply to industries.
Please go back to intellectual property school, then try again.
ORRR maybe this isnt the G2 after all, It runs Android but doesnt make every phone that does a G series, maybe they have another phone lined up for the G2. Maybe one with a full QWERTY. Who knows. Maybe we wont see anything till october, one year after the G1, maybe release one every year a G series, but there still have Android phones throughout the year, just not there G series
T-Mobile Cupcake.
.....duh :P
I own a G1, I'm using it right now. I don't really conisder the Magic to be a sucessor to the G1/Dream. It's just an alternate style of an Android phone for Tmo.
It makes less sence to label it as a sucessor to the G1 when many consumers would still perfer the G1 and be willing to pay full price.
I'm personally hoping for a G1 Elite model once my contract is up. Same form factor, OLED screen, larger internal memory, and faster processor. A true "G2" or sucessor to the G1
The GX phones might go down the same route as sidekicks? They started out with a decent first model and then started downgrading the future devices in the line to make them more affordable for moms with teenage kids who text constantly. Perhaps the same is happening for the G2? And then they would name the G3 like they did to the Sidekick LX (it has no specific model number, but the line of Sidekick 1-2-3 continues).
Hush, I still have high hopes for the rumored G3 (with 3g!)
I guess I should take the comments about copyright into consideration, too. But couldn't the name be "T-Mobile GX"? Or would that still encroach on the other copyrights?
I am still hoping for chronological order ;)
Am I the only one who thinks that this is a way to avoid legal trouble with Gatorade?
i know just name it "iphoneclone wannabee"
or even better "failed iphonekiller#26",.
Don't care how they call it, would they release the damn phone already???
