Oh Apple, what are you up to? Just like we saw right around this time last year in preparation for Apple's new iPhone 3G and updated iPod touch, Apple is placing huge orders of NAND chips thereby threatening the supply in demand by other tier-one vendors. This time we've got
DigiTimes confirming earlier reports that Apple is cornering the market on flash memory -- specifically, the Taiwanese rumor rag is reporting orders of "100 million 8Gb (8 gigabit, not gigabyte) NAND flash chips mostly with Samsung Electronics." That's
twice the size of the order reported last year. The tiny memory chips are then recombined during manufacturing into the larger 16GB, 32GB, and so on capacities we expect to find in our handheld consumer electronics. Anyone still doubting
new Apple handhelds in June?
i actually thought flash in browser has finally come to ifone
This is non-news, but I guess flashy, misleading titles such as 100 MILLION chips draws attention, got to meet that Apple article quota somehow right.
And 100 million 8 gigabit chips is really not that much.
Do the math yourselves:
8 Gb = 1 GB
100 Million 8Gb chips then = 100 Million 1GB chips
So really, that means they have 100 Million GB's to work with.
That means either:
12.5 Million 8 GB devices
or
6.25 million 16 GB devices
or
3.125 million 32 GB devices
or
some combination thereof
That's really not that many devices.
but the article is saying Apple is getting so many that the global supply of those chips may run out before other companies can buy them.
Fox,
They are 1 GB chips.
Not many companies in the world even use 1GB chips, many have moved on to larger per chip capacity units.
This is sensationalism, pure and simple.
The article is crap - where is the proof that this will threaten supply??
Apple made an order like they would be expected to do - end of!
Probably not related, since Apple usually refreshes the iPod line later in the year, but an interesting coincidence to these reports is Amazon is now running a sale on all iPods. You can get a 16GB Nano for about $175 and an 8GB one for about $135. I don't suppose they'd be looking to clear out inventory in anticipation of new iPods this early, right?
Palm better hurry their rear ends up..
bury brigade... hoooooo
I'm betting on a 10" touch screen, 1/2" thick note-pad (i-note?), with 64GB SSD, 3g, 802.11n. It will be like a giant iphone or the best netbook. They don't want to make a netbook that sucks, this will definitely not suck, unless they lock it into ATT.
that is a tight name ,gotta admit.
i smell a cdma iphone! you heard it here 1st!
att and apple have exclusivity contract till june 29 2013.in usa.cdma only accounts for 5% of phones on the planet, it would be like switching to vhs as opposed to dvd.,.,dee dee deee!
I hear Palm is frantic trying to track down internal memory for the Pre. They may only have enough momory for a production run of 200 Pres. No matter. I doubt if they can sell any more than that.
lol.,!!!!!!!!!
Unless Apple comes out with a 64GB iPod touch, there won't be one in my future.
Wow, it must be nice having barrels full of cash laying around!

Apple should be investigated for market manipulation. They are just trying to limit Palms access to chips.
I am sure apple needs more of them
iphone is really great and it has become an integral part of our life.
The NAND chips would really be effective.
