Peapod the friendly Neighborhood Electric Vehicle in the flesh (with video!)
We just got an exclusive first look at the Peapod from Chrysler's Global Eco Mobility unit. Like its cousin the GEM, Peapod is a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle, which means it's limited by law to 25 mph and can't go on the highways. Peapod gets about 30 miles on a charge, and adds in all the "car" goodies that GEM was lacking. The vehicle seats four in lightweight Arion-inspired seats, has suicide doors for easy entry, a windowed roof that can be removed for some open-air driving, and even a nice amount of trunk space. On the dash there's an iPod dock and the instruments panel is a colorful collection of informations. We couldn't drive it around just yet -- it was stuck in a building lobby -- but we'll get a shot at taking this onto the city streets shortly. The Peapod should hit the streets in October, for the quite dramatic estimated pricetag of around $12,000. That's a pretty penny for something that can't top 25 mph, but at least this thing is a lot more likely than the P.U.M.A. to land in your driveway in the near future.
Update: We added some video, check it out after the break!

Twenty-five miles per hour will get you killed in Texas, but then again, so will being black, or gay, or Mexican.
If the max speed were alittle more and it could hit a highway Id buy it. Im not that far from my job and this could do me perfect just driving around Brooklyn......
Damn, if only it could go 45 mph. The's the limit that can get me to everywhere I need to go but work.
$10,000 for a two seater that can hold three full paper grocery sacks and reach 45mph with a range of 50 miles. That will be the electric vehicle I buy. That could get me anywhere I need to go in Overland Park (Kansas City), including work, and the only thing I'd have to worry about is winter transportation.
I think you mean Aeron-inspired seats.
for a second I thought I was missing out on something.
c'mon!!
that sales man face says it all. what a fail.
I'd rather buy 2 pumas and glue them together.
The guy promoting the car is thinking, "What the fuck is this piece of horse shit?"
Who would buy such a thing?
if you can only drive it around the neighbourhood (it's too slow even to drive in the city) you are much better off using a bike. and that way you can save $11800
Again !
Motor companies are just flashing off ! Too little too late !
It's presented like it's a breakthrough, like if they where saying: "Hey, look at the new eco-friendly car we've just built".
First:
It's only "a project" ! (We'll never know when, if and how it's going to be released)
Second:
It's not a new idea ! (MANY other concept are already on the road !)
This is just to keep environmentalist happy about the auto industry and about the present crisis. If they can build it, why did'nt they give us these cars 10 years ago before the shit started to hit the fan ???
Here is a company that has been doing it for the past 3 years. They already have a car (or 2) on the streets of California and other states.
See for yourself !

what's an "Arion"?
Yeah because americans need to eat more food.
iPod dock? I don't like these proprietary docks included with automobiles these days; not everyone uses iPods.
This is one of the WORST spokespersons I've ever heard. He sounded like he was just given a script to memorize, but forgot 80% of it.
I agree he was a horrible spokesman. But he's actually the designer of the vehicle, and has more money than any of us could ever dream of having. Oh, and he's a bit of a bastard, too.
hey chrysler if you really want to sell this vehicle well make a few changes like make it 4wd and camoflage maybe mossy oak breakup and add some gun racks and maybe just maybe you could compete with the bad boy buggie and other electric hunting vehicles
