Firmware update brings file conversion, iPhone access to HP's MediaSmart ex485 / ex487

First off, we should clarify that this v2.5 update is only for HP's latest MediaSmart Servers, the ex487 and ex485. HP informed us that the prior models simply lacked the horsepower and RAM to handle these new tasks. Also of note, the update will be provided free of charge for anyone who cares to indulge, and while a specific date has yet to be nailed down, it will be out for all to download before the end of April. Now, onto features.
HP has listened to its loyal MediaSmart buyers and thrown in quite a few much-needed additions. First up is automatic video conversion, which converts pretty much any non-protected (read DRM-laced) file for viewing on a portable media player. Specifically, we're talking AVI (DivX, XviD, MJPEG), MOV, DVR-MS, MPEG-2, MP4, MPEG-4, WMV and unprotected DVD VOB. Users can simply select full size videos to be downsized, and the server will automatically handle conversion in the background at lowest priority. In other words, the rather intensive transcoding process won't hinder your rig's ability to backup connected computers and stream media within the home. What wasn't clear is the exact resolution that you end up with, and so far as we could tell, there's absolutely no way for users to go in and customize that in any way. In other words, you get "a small file," but you have no control over its dimensions or format (it emits H.264/MPEG-4 files only).
The second big inclusion is the ability to stream to one's iPhone and iPhone 3G. The so-called iStream function requires a free iPhone application (which is currently making its way through Apple's certification process) and for Remote Access to be enabled on the MediaSmart Server itself. We're told that users can stream easily over 3G and WiFi, while anything more than low bitrate audio and compressed images will struggle on EDGE. The app enables users to check out audio, photos and video stored on the server right on Apple's iPhone, and we have to commend HP on the application's interface. For the most part, it looks exactly like the built-in iPod app, so it shouldn't be too tough to grasp once installed. There are three separate portals to dive into (Music, Photos and Videos), and there is absolutely no synchronization required. You simply login to your HP Server once, and afterwards you'll automatically be tunneled into your media so long as your Remote Access password remains the same. We should also point out that your streaming experience will greatly depend on your upload rate at home; if you're only pushing a few kilobytes up, you can't expect things to work too well remotely.
Lastly, HP is adding smaller, more subtle enhancements to the server itself including improved streaming, a more robust Media Collector, improved Apple Time Machine configuration and the ability to create public and private albums in Photo Viewer. Have a peek at a few screen captures above, and stay tuned for an exact launch date.

Did somebody say iPhone?
Yup, Microsoft did. But I'm not cool enough to have a MediaSmart pc.
This might be a good idea for someone starting from scratch who needs a home media server and a requirement to access various file formats via internet and away from home. This HP server could really simplify things. It seems to me TVersity and/or ORB Live along a home media server/htpc would serve up similar functionality but takes much more work and configuration overall.
Yeah, the simplicity of this could justify the premium over a custom-built machine.
certainly interesting...
I love the interface!
HP's getting cozy with Apple. I'd like to see more of this.
Cheap HP laptops with PRE-INSTALLED OSX? YAY! (I emphasize on PRE-INSTALLED because Hackintosh is easy, but maybe not for the average laptop user)
I think HP has always been a bit friendly with Apple, I don' think most people remember, but at one point there was an HP branded iPod. this was back when the MP3 wars were still being fought.
also HP totally missed the point here, sell one without any discs and severely drop the price, granted the updates are welcome, but still sell one of these with no discs at like 200USD.
Does iTunes streaming work with iPhone?
TVersity does all of those media functions, I access my media almost more remotely than I do locally.
I hate HP. I should have never bought my ex470. They never support their products. All they do is pump and dump. If you want to add any new features you have to get a whole new piece of hardware. They have done this to me with printers, ipaq and now a server. I honestly bought the WHS becasue I thought is looked cool. My mistake never HP again. I know this horsepower issue is bunch of BS, to force me to replace a perfectly good and functionlal box with a totally new one to get a simple additional add-ons.
HP explains why they cant apply this update to the older machines.
The old boxes just simply arent fast enough for the file conversion and h.264 streaming.
Get over it and buy a new box.
So, when does the 480ex get Time Machine support, or will it ever? :(
I have upgraded my processor, memory and drives in my 470EX, sucks that I can't get this upgrade. Of course I guess there are other plugins that can get the same thing accomplished.
Wouldn't it just be easier to build one from scratch than pay HP to build you one then rebuild it again ?
Interface with your home server over edge ? That sounds useful LOL
But then even with edge's pitful bandwidth it depends what upload speed your home internet connection runs at my 10Mb line (in the UK) only comes with a 512Kb upload.
think Android will get something like this?
I asked HP about the schedule for the promised EX470/EX475 update, and they stated that they are still planning to release an update for the 1st generation MediaSmart Servers but they wouldn't commit to a timeframe. Full details in my release announcement for the 2.5 Software Update.

I call "No fair" for us early adopters. I am still very happy with 470
this sucks?
I have the original EX470 and I realize the stock processor and ram will not allow this to run on older models, but allot of us upgraded the ram and processor and our systems are faster than the newer ones so why not let there be some sort of test
"HP informed us that the prior models simply lacked the horsepower and storage capabilities to handle these new tasks."
Really? Horsepower, okay (the older ones use Sempron). But lack of storage capabilities? The previous media smart servers have ho problems handling terabyte hard-drives. I could believe HP more if they said RAM since the older ones only come with 512MB RAM, but saying they lack "storage capabilities" sound more like a cop-out of saying "Buy the new ones."
It's annoying that the EX485/EX487 are not available in the UK so it's not as if we have a chance to buy the newer models. :-(
About time!
To answer a couple of questions:
EX470/475 Owners - HP have told me that the Mac backup and Amazon S3 online backup features will be released to you guys in "May". Unfortunately, the new 2.5 update will not be back ported.
EX485/487 in the UK/Europe - apparently, a release is still being considered.
I've been testing a pre-release version of the new 2.5 update for We Got Served. Details here:

Wow a really useful upgrade for my EX485. I disabled the media collector since it just wouldnt work all the time. Had a prblem with the doubling my music on the server. Now i might ahve to give it a try again. The iphone app would be great for remote access. I wouldnt have to actually have videos on my ipod touch if i can sit at work and easily stream them from my setup HP page.
i love when you buy a product and a company adds functionality for FREE.
I love it even more when a company supports their products for their entire lifetime instead of dropping support for the early adopters that were so loyal to them.
Don't worry, they will drop support for your box too when the EX490 series comes out.
hey, HP, why don't you fix the stupid, idiotic, crappy double-logon between you and MS for the EX470/475s before working on more functionality for machines we don't have? geez, just put crap software out there, then forget about any support for it nice
huh? why?
Did someone say Simplify Media? It has some of the same features. I have no problem streaming my music of the Edge network.
Once again, us early adopters (EX470) are left out in the cold. My list grows each day...ATT, iphone, Sling, HP...
FOr a better home server option look at www.amahi.org
It's bull, that HP won't send out a update for EX470 owners. Probably the last time I buy an HP product!
I own an ex470. I can understand why other ex47x owners are annoyed that they can't this, but do you really not get why? The whole MediaSmart concept was to make a system easy for everyday users. If those who did not upgrade their processor/RAM see an "optional" upgrade that offers these features, they're going to try and install it - then it's not going to work and they are going to dump on HP for that. Even if the update checked your hardware, this would encourage non-technical users to void their warranty and try to upgrade their processor. While I can certainly handle this chore, I can see many other people screwing it up. Warranty voiding aside, they're going to try and go to HP to fix the problem, then resent them if they can't.
So yeah, I wish I could get these, but I can't blame HP for not offering them on the ex47x models. I can, however, blame HP for not making the ex47x hardware stronger in the first place. All in all, I love my MediaSmart server. And I appreciate that HP does a lot to try and fill in the feature gaps. I'm happy enough with what it already does that I think I can hold tight until the next version of WHS comes out and then upgrade to a new box. for a saavy user, there are other ways to get these kind of features, anyways,
The online backup over at http://www.myotherdrive.com is nice, too. Does anyone know if they have support for iPhone, too. I like their file sharing, but would like to access my music from my iPhone.
