Netflix on the lookout for gaming platforms engineering guru
We've heard whispers of Netflix heading to other, non-Xbox 360 game consoles before, and now adding to the susurrus is a job listing from the company for Engineering Lead - Gaming Platforms. The description calls for someone familiar with the technical hurdles of current-gen consoles for building a small team to "rapidly prototype and iterate on a variety of platforms." Whether or not this means we'll be seeing PlayStation 3 or Wii services in the near (or even distant) future is anyone's guess, but with Microsoft's version so far a streaming success, we wouldn't be surprised if the company took a few steps to increase the probability that 3 billionth delivered flick is digital.

If only I was competant I could totally do that!
Netflix is smart to expand to other consoles. The only reason I have the service is because I can stream from my Xbox. I know you can use playon or tversity or other media players, but it's seemless with the Xbox, and I like seemless.
Ah really, susurrus?? I mean c'mon.....
What's a susurrus?
Haha that was dictionary.com's word of the day today!
susurrus: A whispering or rustling sound; a murmur
yeah i saw the wotd from gmail also... we'll think higher of you engadget if you just wait a week before using new words
Awesome. Too bad Time Warner is going to force me to cancel Netflix. :[
I almost sign up their internet cable until i saw those restriction and charge $1 for each GB over limit. I might has to stick with AT&T.....
Who? What? Torrents? Ok.
Well for Sony it would make sense.
Though for the PS3 there could be some special deals, after all, Sony Pictures is one of the big six movie studios and Sony have some leverage on Netflix in that they're providing a lot of content for Netflix on the 360, so why would Sony want the same terms that the 360 has for the PS3?
Sony could use some of that leverage to their advantage....though this is Sony we're talking about.
susurrus: EXCELLENT word!
Don't be a douche bag and use the Word of the Day on the same day it comes out—that's just weak.
Great scoop though (:

Geez I need to dust all this pollen away or something.
Well this just became the most applied-for job on the planet. I'm sure Netflix's HR department is just thrilled.
Well Duh...
I mean think about it...
the MAIN reason they went 360 first was most likely because of way they Stream using MS technology anyways(Silverlight, etc.), well maybe that and MS cut them a check.
Once they figure oout a way to stream other than using that MS code then they will be able to bring it to other consoles AND devices. I would be willing to bet that by 2011 Netflix will be streaming to iPhones & Blackberry's etc...
Actually the main reason was likely because the Netflix CEO is on the Microsoft board of directors.
The Silverlight version of the Netflix player is actually new and just an alternate version that you have to opt in to use (although maybe new subscribers are forced to use it). Most people, myself included, use the original version which is based on Windows Media Player technology.
I'd be thrilled if Netflix would do video games as well as movies. Gamefly just doesn't seem to have the capability to do it well. Games I wanted were always taken and they took a week to be delievered, too. If Netflix could apply everything it's learned about movie rental to game rentals, that'd be great.
If Netflix really wants to get onto television screens through game consoles, they should just release a super-cheap PS2 disc. I'm pretty sure I have never met a person who didn't have a PS2 in their house somewhere.
I'd be okay with this as long as it doesn't jack up my rates.
"Blah blah blah, XBOX 360 disks cost a lot, therefore we're raising your premium from $1 to this multi-tiered set of rates."
Now they need to hire someone to port the service to other countries as well as other platforms.
