Tesla's Roadster rolls 241 miles on single charge, annoys petrol pumps
If one drives the Roadster "as it was intended to be driven," you'll probably only get around 125 miles out of it before things slowly grind to a halt. If you toss on your economy shoes and take things a bit easier, it's apparently possible to get well over 200 miles on a single charge. As the story goes, Tesla's first all-electric whip managed to cruise 241 miles in a Monte Carlo e-rally, running from the town of Valance in France to the Principality of Monaco. Better still, the vehicle's battery meter showed 36 miles left on the "tank" when it crossed the finish line, giving it a theoretical range of around 280 miles. If all these figures hold up under critical scrutiny, Tesla will set the world record for the longest distance traveled by a production EV on a single charge. Now, if only it could set the world record for most EVs actually produced by an EV company, we'd really feel the need to celebrate.

@Darwin - Hilarious ! I don't understand why people are so against EVs.
Mr S. is correct. The harder you use a car, the less miles it will go.
Personally, I like the newer - yet to be released vehicle - Model S. I like the option of the number of miles you would like to go on a specific charge. I think that will help people to get over the mileage hump.
I drive a R32...
Freeway: 25mpg : 400 miles
Backroads: 14mpg : 275 miles
Racetrack: 8mpg : 130miles
I dont see why people complain... seams to get the same millage as me.
except that once u finish with ur 400 miles, you can be back on the road in about 5 minutes with a refuel.
with the tesla, it will take u 3.5 hours.
See the difference now?
I too get pretty decent gas mileage on a 11.5 gallon tank in a 2002 Chevy Malibu I can get around 210 miles. I am sure if I had a cleaner car (new air filter, fresh oil change, and new spark plugs) I could get even higher. Yes its a nice feat for a all electric car. But they need something that can 'spank' the competition like say around 200 miles and a 3 minute charge or 500 miles and a 2hr charge that would be a bit nicer.
Sweet sweet ride. Someday Tesla you and I : )
Eek, I'm kinda glad you didn't complete that sentence...
"
The Tesla is EXACTLY the same as the Elise, except it has:
a totally different drivetrain
totally different body panels
totally different aluminum tub
totally different rear sub-frame
totally different brakes and ABS system
totally different HVAC
totally different rear suspension
and doesn't have the Lotus's gas tank, emissions equipment or exhaust."
hahaha, maybe you should look up the definition of "exactly the same."
whoosh
The Model S will be very affordable here in Norway. Costing less than a Toyota Avensis. Eletric cars are not taxed here, get free passes on toll roads, can park at the entrance at IKEA and other larger stores and can drive in bus/taxi lanes :)
I want one! There are quite a few electric car workshops here. Many people have bought extra eletric peugots (modded 106s) just to use the bus/taxi lane to work. I hope Obama grants Tesla money/a cheap loan so they can start manufacturing and hopefully get the cars on the road before 2011.
Tesla is the last company that needs a government loan. Building more toys for people that don't need them. If they were working to develop an all-electric car that was PRACTICAL then maybe, but the Tesla is far too expensive to affect the kind of economic and environmental changes that the Obama administration is trying to achieve.
Do you guys really go to IKEA that often? This is the funniest serious comment I've ever read on here.
@Kevin.
You clearly haven't seen the Tesla Model S, have you?

Well what other EV makers have produced more electric cars (full fledged, production cars, not NEVs etc) than Tesla ? Just curious. Tesla has produced almost 400 Roadsters so far...
GM produced 1100 EV1s, but they didn't sell any, only leased, then they recalled them all and crushed almost all of them, so I'm not sure if you want to count that.
Toyota sold 328 RAV4EV cars to the public.
Thousands of GEMs were sold, but they are golf carts, not cars. Thousands of golf carts have also been sold, but they are golf carts...
Currently at about 350, Tesla has already delivered more sold, not leased, highway capable electric cars than anyone.
That's what I thought, thanks for the confirmation and the numbers, BBHY ! Hopefully that'll clue Darren in...
let's see how the tesla sedan fares...
replaceable batteries would be nice...
I wonder how fast it gets up to, lets say, 50% charge. Other manufacturers claim that they can reach maybe 50% in 10 minutes. Judging from my laptop, the big problem is the part above maybe 80%, that is what takes all the time. But 50% should be enough most of the time, and if necessary you can fill up again for 10 minutes. I think 10 minutes is enough to make it useful... a stop at the petrol station takes its time as well.
nice mileage:) wish all cars were electric and had this mileage!
Good range. Maybe by the time you die, you'll have paid for the massively overpriced car and its EXTRA charging system in fuel savings.
Charge it up and go I like it. http://AtxElectronics.com.....
enought with the Tesla already. so far its just lots of hype with no end result. they keep changing the cars "mechanics" and keep running into walls. Who is financing all this anyways?! I was excited about this car 3 years ago. now its just another "flying car" to me.
What are you talking about ? Lots of hype and no end results ? They've delivered over 350 Roadsters already ! They keep changing the mechanics ? The only think they've changed is the transmission, and only a handful of the very first production models had the older one (which got swapped out quickly, and for free). What walls do they keep running into ? You are either clueless or disingenuous. Flying car huh ? Well it seems there's almost 400 flying cars already out there, working as advertised, then...
Watch the top gear episode on the Tezla car. They ran it on the track. I believe it was no more than 55 miles before it came to a grinding halt.

that is the link from you tube. Go to about 4 minutes and 55 seconds.
Nope, they say they worked it out, not that it actually did.
No word on how long does a full charge take?
Meanwhile at an General Motors Corporate meeting..."sure it can run on a single charge for 241 miles, but it doesn't run on 2 wheels... so where's the innovation?"
For the price of a Tesla Roadster, you can buy a Honda Fit and enough fuel (@$2/gallon) to drive a whopping 1,645,000 miles.
Is a Honda Fit a like-for-like comparison with the Tesla? Does it have the same 0-60 speed? NO!
Go and find a two seat sports car that can do 0-60 in under 4 seconds, and then compare price and fuel consumption figures. Then tell me how many miles you can drive on the left over money.
And yes, the car is expensive. It's new technology. Look at the price of the S-Class Mercedes compared to the A-Class. The S-Class gets all the cool technological advancements first. Within a few years, those advancements trickle down to the smaller, cheaper cars like the A-Class. The SLK was the first roadster to have a foldable hard-top. Now you can get the same technology with other manufacturers for a lot less.
