To think, it's only been three months since we talked about Apple's iTunes store crossing the
500 million download threshold, and now it looks like the gang in Cupertino are gearing up to celebrate their
1 billionth app. To celebrate, the company's released two lists showcasing the top 20 free and paid iPhone apps, respectively. Presuming these are in order (they're certainly not alphabetical), that puts
Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D for paid apps and Facebook for free apps. Interestingly,
Crash shares with
Super Monkey Ball the dubious honor of being the only two apps on the list at $5.99, the highest price here. Eight of the paid apps cost $0.99 apiece, and the rest fall somewhere in between. Check out both lists after the break.

Actually, they're celebrating with a give-a-way, not just the top 20 apps.
...
Are you trying to improve your own chances?
Crash Bandicoot is the top non-freebie. THose Apple fanboys are human after all. *Tear* I love Crash.
I envy you iPhone users for this one thing: Unified App Store.
Logically the next step was to create the first iPhone "bathroom journal" called POOP THE WORLD, allowing you to geotag your location at the scene of the crime, and send your friends an iPoop to document the occasion...somebody had to do it :-)
Clearly we are being a touch ironic here using a great technology for an absurd purpose. But if you've got an iPhone, and a sense of humor, it is well worth the $0.99. The subject matter may be crap, but the application is quite the opposite as it was designed by two of the leading application developers in the business.

People are actually paying for the iFart app?!!? OMG, this is funnier than what I thought.
Saad but true!
it's amazing what 13 year old boys can get their parents to pay for
Fun fact mates, "Saad" (سعد) is an Arabic name that means: Happiness. :)
We NEED an embargo on fart apps!!!!!!
is the ipod touch worht it? my zune isnt cutting it for video usage anymore
why dont u wait for zune hd and see how that goes.
i don't think an ipod touch is worth it btw. its like a phoneless iphone, might as well get the iphone and have one less gadget in your pocket
The iPod Touch is good, since it grants you access to all the same apps the iPhone does. While the Zune HD might bring a touchscreen to the Zune lineup, it's not likely to bring with it a massive catalog of applications.
get the iPhone? Dur. that's 70 bucks a month in fees.
You already have a cell phone, just get an iPod touch for about 229 bucks, its a no brainer.
There is NO competition. Certainly not the vaporware iZune-HD.
If the Zune isn't doing it for movie or video situations for you, then I doubt the iPod Touch would.
Get a PSP. Cheaper than a touch, lots of apps, great video, expandable + switchable memory!
The iPod touch is a great device, and I highly recommend it to those looking for a new iPod, but can't afford the iPhone plan. It's got all the features of the iPhone except the phone and camera, but it can make VoIP calls using Skype.
If your Zune isn't cutting it anymore, get the iPod touch.
I got one for me and my wife. We both use it daily. It's great for games, music, surfing the net, photos, and videos. I would love to have an iPhone but I currently only pay 30 bucks a month for my cell phone and don't feel like spending 70+.
I would say that for the sheer amount of stuff you can do with an iPod Touch it is well worth the 220 bucks.
I love my iPod Touch. I never put it down, and it makes me really happy to not pay the high cost of an iPhone data plan when 90% of my time is spent at home or at my office with WiFi. The only thing I would change on it would be a larger screen.
What's not cutting it on the Zune? Screen size, storage space, output options, player controls?
Given the fact that voip is coming to the ipod touch in the form of Skype, I think it's very worth it. Once that happens, the only (major) thing that separates the iphone from the touch is legally binding service contracts.
I would say, get a Touch, but quietly I would say, wait until the next update to the Touch, and then get a Touch. I got the G1 Touch and although I envy the G2 owners, at least there is no break in compatibility - apart from GPS and microphone apps, I can run the same apps as G2 owners.
However I suspect the G3 Touch and iPhone will be sufficiently upgraded so that there will be apps coming out that only work on the G3 devices, and so if that's true you probably don't want to be picking up a G1 or G2 Touch or iPhone at this point.
How about an embargo on bullshit applications that you only open once, fuck around with, then delete...I want some god damn substance!
Then you've got the wrong phone.
Substance = WinMo, not iPhone.
"App Store stats suggest humans have attention span of gnats"

80+% of the Apps aren't even worth using more than once, that's not me talking, that's based on the actual numbers collected by Apple themselves.
Don't worry, be crappy.
There are crappy apps out there but there are also awesome apps. Do some research and you'll save a lot of wasted time and money.
Hamidxa - the troll's troll.
We'll see once Microsoft launches their copy of Apple's, Google's and Palm's app store what percentage of apps are crap. A lot of iPhone apps are crap, but then again a lot of apps for Windows, Mac and Linux are also crap. Also, most of the crap apps are free - you get what you pay for, or, more accurately in this case, you don't get what you don't pay for...

I have a 16GB iPod Touch and love it to death. Pull up behind a coffee shop in some out-of-town local and check your email. Send a few free text messages. Surf the net to update your Netflix que. Download updates to 6 different applications that are installed. Play and have it shuffle 1600 songs while surfing the net. The applications are killer. I use Beatmaker to create custom grooves that I export both MIDI and .WAV audio of to use in my studio. It's a 35.00 applications but it's like an MPC-60 with even more editing control (shifting of every note's timing which is AWESOME).
You won't see applications like these on any other hand held device of this size for a long time...... I see the iPod Touch as the computer of the future, quite honestly.

just goes to show. you can make money. (looks like a lot of it) selling absolute crap.
yeah, i was thinking abt going into the iphone app business. might some crappy app no ones thought of, wait for about 1000 people to buy it, and you got yourself $5000.
Your comment tells me you have never used an iPhone or iPod Touch and have no clue what you're moaning about.
One billionth ifart app - that's the next milestone.
That would mean trillions of farts. The mere idea scares me.
@Saad Rabia - you are ware that Obama has been elected - you no longer need to subliminally suggest that we elect him.
@stevetren - iPod touch is definitely worth it - think about this - at free WiFi hot spots - you can check your email, surf the net AND call friends and relatives on SKYPE from your iPod Touch... far cry from the vids on the (ulp-urp-gasp) Z... ulp erp une...
As for the apps - I like my 250 apps that I have - even though I can't load them all - (actually only 130 but it is fun to dream on occasion)... I hope some little old lady in Odessa wins the goods... now that would be cool!
Cheers...
From the land downunder!!!
Call friends on Skype... with what microphone?
The iPod touch 2nd gen supports headphones that have a mic attached to them
Thanks, kakapo. Now I'm going to have that Men At Work song stuck in my head all day.
Seriously... it's almost 6 hours later and the song is still stuck in my head. Ugh, fml.
These are the top20 apps in the US, I am getting a different top 20 list here in the Netherlands.
oooooo @Adam... You wouldn't be talking about V.I.S.T.A. now would you? Now, THAT, is "absolute crap". And the ZUNE is the brown floaty bit too..
Cheers
how have you turned this into a Microsoft vs Apple???
if you have ifart and ibeer in the top ten then whoever made those useless (crap) apps have made loads of money.
Nothing to do with zune or vista - i'm sure these types of apps will appear on the other app stores when they are fully running.
chill out - I can see the vain in your head!!
Damn, love my iPhone, love the App Store!
An app called iFart, which has to be bought (IS NOT FREE), is on the top 20 list.
This should be in every world record book out there.
Don't be jealous that your non-iPhone cannot improve your social standing with such witty audio effects!
They expect to be perceived as a gaming platform contender when their top paid app is a godawful kart racer from 6 years ago?
@sai how about you don't inundate the comments section with your shitty self-promotion? kthxbai
iFart deserves a lot of credit. A lot of the top 20 apps have been around since the start. iFart was a late comer to the party. It would surely be number 1 if it had been released on day 1.
iPhone: Serious Business
People are still paying for iPhone apps??
This list was available days ago when engadget posted about Apple approaching its 1 billionth downloaded app. It's nice to see they finally got around to reading what they posted.
post the same story twice = more ad revenue for engadget.
boom.
stop complaining. you read/commented didn't you? you gave them ad revenue.
Lot of crap apps there. The problem is sifting through the garbage which most of them are.
Only games and crapware. This reflects the tipical iPhone's user.
whoa whoa whoa! Fieldrunners is not crap. Fieldrunners has to be one of the best games on the device. It's won a few awards too! The only reason it's not higher up is because of it's price and lack of recognizable characters.
Oops, I meant his comment for cmil1212...
I got a $150 first gen touch from Apple a week ago. Its only a 8gig but its great for games. I dont really use it as my MP3 player so its all I need. I tried to go away from the iphone but had to go back. The Apps are what makes the thing great. And checking my mail anywhere there is wifi and the net in my pocket.
App store is still around ??
excellent
Useful apps for me:
Facebook. It's like checking email but with less spam.
Wordbook: dictionary app, but you don't need to be online. Worth the $2 paid for it.
Wikipanion: takes you directly to wikipedia to look something up.
USA Today newsreader: Because the NY Times reader always crashes. USA today always comes up fast.
iHandy Level: It's a construction level for the iPod Touch! I never thought I would ever use it, but I use it almost once per week to check the angle on something. I went for a hike, and I pulled it out to measure the slope of the trail.
Engadget and Autoblog safari pages bookmarked: handy way to stay updated.
This top 20 is the perfect cross section of iPhone users. Man, that makes me sad. The paid app list makes me even sadder. Apple definitely has the market on short attention span. It also illustrates that the serious business user still belongs to Blackberry.
yeah the upcoming navigation app will certainly be on the list soon enough!
Psh. And to think I paid 9.99 for Super Monkey Ball at launch. What a rip-off.
I guess it's not any different than paying full price for a console game at launch only to see it in the bargain bin for 20 bucks 6 months later.
i thought that iFart was free .... what a ripoff.
I still say fart app suck
Nice to see my favorite app, Fieldrunners, barely squeaking past iFart.
the Ipod Touch is worth it - and although it is phone-les : ever look at AT&T rates? : for the AVERAGE cell phone use that a teenager, or college student may use it for, cost roughly $100 a month : but verizon wireless, u can get unlimited text, and 800min(no uses voice anymore) for about $60 a month (which is my plan right now)
bottom line a $300 16gb ipod touch is what most ppl whould use, and to think, if you can afford gas, and food, and rent in todays world, a lil bit of saving, in a few months you can get an ipod touch that can do all these amazing things :D
but thats just mine, and the rest of the statistical worlds opinion :D
