To think, it's only been three months since we talked about Apple's iTunes store crossing the
500 million download threshold, and now it looks like the gang in Cupertino are gearing up to celebrate their
1 billionth app. To celebrate, the company's released two lists showcasing the top 20 free and paid iPhone apps, respectively. Presuming these are in order (they're certainly not alphabetical), that puts
Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D for paid apps and Facebook for free apps. Interestingly,
Crash shares with
Super Monkey Ball the dubious honor of being the only two apps on the list at $5.99, the highest price here. Eight of the paid apps cost $0.99 apiece, and the rest fall somewhere in between. Check out both lists after the break.

People are still paying for iPhone apps??
This list was available days ago when engadget posted about Apple approaching its 1 billionth downloaded app. It's nice to see they finally got around to reading what they posted.
post the same story twice = more ad revenue for engadget.
boom.
stop complaining. you read/commented didn't you? you gave them ad revenue.
Lot of crap apps there. The problem is sifting through the garbage which most of them are.
Only games and crapware. This reflects the tipical iPhone's user.
whoa whoa whoa! Fieldrunners is not crap. Fieldrunners has to be one of the best games on the device. It's won a few awards too! The only reason it's not higher up is because of it's price and lack of recognizable characters.
Oops, I meant his comment for cmil1212...
I got a $150 first gen touch from Apple a week ago. Its only a 8gig but its great for games. I dont really use it as my MP3 player so its all I need. I tried to go away from the iphone but had to go back. The Apps are what makes the thing great. And checking my mail anywhere there is wifi and the net in my pocket.
App store is still around ??
excellent
Useful apps for me:
Facebook. It's like checking email but with less spam.
Wordbook: dictionary app, but you don't need to be online. Worth the $2 paid for it.
Wikipanion: takes you directly to wikipedia to look something up.
USA Today newsreader: Because the NY Times reader always crashes. USA today always comes up fast.
iHandy Level: It's a construction level for the iPod Touch! I never thought I would ever use it, but I use it almost once per week to check the angle on something. I went for a hike, and I pulled it out to measure the slope of the trail.
Engadget and Autoblog safari pages bookmarked: handy way to stay updated.
This top 20 is the perfect cross section of iPhone users. Man, that makes me sad. The paid app list makes me even sadder. Apple definitely has the market on short attention span. It also illustrates that the serious business user still belongs to Blackberry.
yeah the upcoming navigation app will certainly be on the list soon enough!
Psh. And to think I paid 9.99 for Super Monkey Ball at launch. What a rip-off.
I guess it's not any different than paying full price for a console game at launch only to see it in the bargain bin for 20 bucks 6 months later.
i thought that iFart was free .... what a ripoff.
I still say fart app suck
Nice to see my favorite app, Fieldrunners, barely squeaking past iFart.
the Ipod Touch is worth it - and although it is phone-les : ever look at AT&T rates? : for the AVERAGE cell phone use that a teenager, or college student may use it for, cost roughly $100 a month : but verizon wireless, u can get unlimited text, and 800min(no uses voice anymore) for about $60 a month (which is my plan right now)
bottom line a $300 16gb ipod touch is what most ppl whould use, and to think, if you can afford gas, and food, and rent in todays world, a lil bit of saving, in a few months you can get an ipod touch that can do all these amazing things :D
but thats just mine, and the rest of the statistical worlds opinion :D
