Dell to launch smartphones in China by end of year
After having its prototypes rejected a few times over by carriers here in America, it seems that Michael Dell is taking his smartphone initiative overseas. 'Course, he'll need something mighty special to outshine Lenovo's OPhone over in China, but we digress. Hot on the heels of rumors galore, Reuters is reporting that Dell is indeed aiming to launch multiple smartphones in the Chinese market before the dawn of 2010. A pair of analysts have asserted that the firm is working with Chi Mei Communications -- an unlisted unit of Taiwan's Hon Hai -- on the hardware front, while China-based Red Office is engineering the operating system. Not surprisingly, spokespeople from these outfits are all remaining mum for the moment, but we are told that the US and Europe are on Dell's list of next-up launch markets assuming the China rollout goes well.

Not gonna sell better than the iPhone.
Oh yeah, FIRST!!!
Why?
you would THINK that a powerhouse like Dell could come up with something truly revolutionary
not saying Toshiba always has amazing ideas *cough cough*, but the TG01 is DAMN sexy and its running on something fresh and new - Snapdragon. I don't understand why a huge manufacturer like dell that has background in mobile smartphoney type devices can't come compete (at least, so far)
"Why?" is becoming the new "First".
great idea dell....just needs an OS.
If that dude has a slide out qwerty keyboard or touchscreen qwerty keyboard, I would consider it. Phone looks pretty decent, dunno if I want another Wimo phone though.
Actually the early rumors have been pointing to Android, but Dell does have experience with WinMo from the Axims. The Axims were great devices...although I am sure HTC had plenty to do with that too, but hopefully Dell can come up with something good without HTC. As a former owner, I'm excited wherther it's got Microsoft or Google under the hood. WinMo is my current poison of choice due to the extreme level of customizability (and I completely understand people not liking it...it can be torture to use as a phone sometimes), but Android has only just begun to see its potential.
Apparently most of the early commenters didn't realize...but that's just a generic smart phone picture guys. Actually it's a pic of a cheapo smartphone with a knockoff name (hence the Anycool).
Nobody knows what the Dell phones will look like.
"Anycool" is a knock off of Samsung's "Anycall" mobile phones.
I dont think so, that picture has the famous 5 button layout, I dont think dell would use that, also that usually doesnt happen on any windows mobile phone as the picture shows, it's usually on some cheap taiwan chipset + OS.
that mock up is fantastic! ...dude, your iPhone aint shit compared to my new Anycool! Muhahahahahhaah hahahahhahaahhaha
The only winning form factor Dell could submit for its business phone, is the Palm Pre form factor i.e. Portrait qwerty slider.
Make it an Android portrait qwerty slider and you'll have my money.
Dell to release a new phone and......ruin it by using Windows Mobile!
Is it just me or this is one of the ugliest mobile phone made by a corporation the size of dell?
/facepalm
That's not the Dell Phone, it's just some filler, it has nothing to do with the article. (Aside from that fact that it's a smartphone)
Too bad it won't be as good as the iPhone.
Oh yea, FIRST!!!
"FIRST" ???
You mean first moron? Because your far from first poster. And even if you were first, do you want a reward? Are you proud of yourself? Wow what an accomplishment!
he means first to say it wont beat the iphone.... which it wont.
Why on earth would anyone jump into the Dell mobile market after the totally screwed anyone who spent hundreds of dollars on one of their Axims?
Its a decoy phone ploy to trick the Chinese into thinking this is a popular western phone...that way the KIRF factories will be to busy making this when they release the REAL version.
Who says Dell couldn't sell to US carriers?

Sigh...a blog entry...tell me that isn't really the source...please.
Well, there's a bit of a difference in a Barron's blog written by a Barron's editor (a real reporter type person) and a random blogspot blogger.
Eric joined Barron's as a feature writer in New York in 1988, after four years at the Dow Jones news wires. In 1995, he moved to California as the magazine's first reporter in Silicon Valley, creating the Plugged In column. Eric left Barron's in 1998 to become executive editor of The Industry Standard. He rejoined Barron's in Palo Alto in late 2001. Eric also writes the weekly Tech Trader column in the print edition of Barron's. Criticisms, comments and tips can be sent to: techtraderdaily@barrons.com .
Well...in reality that blog - and it's only a blog, not an article whether we like it or not - is based off a questionable "analyst" set of words.
Yuck.
I guess this is to replace all the people that were working on Axim sets......... They have had trouble with small handsets even though they had alot of good possibilities. I was in the market to buy their jukebox until it went under...... Id like to see them hit us with a phone..... Although as much as winmo would be what theyre going to go for and open source phone would probably get better sales.......
A round home button with a rounded edge square in the center of said button and a silver frame bezel, why not copy the iPhone all the way instead of half ass it like that.
That's not a home button it's a d-pad, idiot.
This isn't even the Dell handset.
Oh in CHINA? You mean the CHINA that wont buy X Boxes or anything electronic made in America? Oh that China? Wow what a smart place to launch a product from a US Based company.
Brilliant!
Don't feed the troll, just hit the report button...
"Oh yeah, FIRST!!!"
LOL! Try 14th maybe??
Dipshit...
Dell makes flawed hardware, the imitators make imitations that are superior, Dell reverse-engineers THOSE for the other markets.
Win!
lol someone must hate Saad alot...
"Anycool"? There's a korean brand called "Anycall", by Samsung...
I almost thought this was one of those fake product posts.
By the look of the phone looks like this is gonna be a flop de la flop...
Put an LV logo on it and maybe it'll sell well in China...
Actually the phone is a $50 KIRF type phone . Just look at the icons at the bottom of phone . Typical chinese phone os.
I hope dell brings it laptop's quality in smartphone . It'd be good to see some nokia competetion.

I don't see any reasons to use windows mobile now.
Well its about time they start buying "crap" from us . Free dell phone in every chinese happy meal!
Why in the world didn't they use Android for their OS.. I was interested for just a minute until I saw that Windows logo in the top left corner.. Sad, so sad..
Why would they pick Android over Windows Mobile? WinMo has proven to be far flexible on a number of devices.
