iPhone OS 3.0 beta 3 goes live
No details on what's new just yet, but iPhone OS 3.0 beta 3 has just hit Apple's servers for registered, card-carrying members of the Dev Center -- a nice release cadence since the new platform was first announced. More as we flesh it out![Via Boy Genius Report]
Update: Alright, well, we've played with it -- as many of you have -- and the update seems cosmetically identical to beta 2. We'd argue that things generally feel smoother and snappier, but the difference is almost imperceptible; go ahead and upgrade if you're chilling on beta 2, but don't expect sunshine and moonbeams with this release.

9 bucks dude? I mean really? 9 dollars?
Between the threat of Apple suing you into the stone age and blatantly ripping people off what type meds do you take at night to help you get to sleep?
Justin @ Apr 14th 2009 6:47PM
yay! keep us updated! was hoping this would come out today...can't wait to see whats new!
P.A.C Man @ Apr 14th 2009 6:52PM
I'm wondering, did the iPhone 2.0 beta go like this? I don't remember hearing anything about it before it was released with the phone, but the 3.0 beta seems to be going a lot quicker and will no doubt be much smoother than the iPhone 3G debut. I think the crush of people buying the 3G really surprised Apple and they weren't really prepared.
who? @ Apr 14th 2009 7:30PM
2.0 beta wasn't for all devs, this is. Also, this one doesn't have a nondisclosure agreement attached to it.
Gnaget @ Apr 14th 2009 8:03PM
Not to top post, but if you are considering updating right now, I'd hold off.
I think it just bricked my iphone. I got an unknown error when updating it, it loaded in restore mode, and got an unknown error attempting to restore to factory defaults. Could just be me, could be more widespread, but might want to delay the update until you know it isn't the latter
Andrew @ Apr 14th 2009 8:17PM
who?:
As a sample of part of the agreement:
5.1 Information Deemed Apple Confidential
You agree that all pre-release versions of the SDK (including pre-release Documentation) and any terms and
conditions contained herein that disclose pre-release features of the SDK will be deemed “Apple Confidential
Information”...
It definitely is covered under NDA that's accepted by your being in the program. It's just a wider public that has access, and thus, there will be more leaks. As with most technology software such as this, NDAs are all too commonly ignored.
Chris Kraynik @ Apr 14th 2009 11:01PM
Indeed, Andrew. You probably just broke the NDA by posting part of it above.
Andrew @ Apr 15th 2009 8:08AM
Haha, probably true.
Grif @ Apr 15th 2009 9:01AM
I think that the bar at the top that displays the connection to wifi and your service provider is now silver when on the iPod, during beta 2 mine was black and it looked really out of place.
Ilya @ Apr 14th 2009 6:47PM
9 month later...a birth of push notifications?
Juan Marquez @ Apr 14th 2009 7:17PM
I jizzed, that's why after 9 months the "PUSH PUSH, notification from the comp doc" was BORN
P.A.C Man @ Apr 14th 2009 6:48PM
I am so freaking psyched for this, but I'm much more interested in what hardware the next version iPhone will have. We want all the goodies now, King Steve.
will @ Apr 14th 2009 6:56PM
Now with more Zune Action!
Adam @ Apr 14th 2009 6:52PM
Downloading now!!!
metfoo @ Apr 14th 2009 6:52PM
Installed now im going through the restore process.
P.A.C Man @ Apr 14th 2009 6:53PM
Are you a DEV or is it on Bittorrent already?
metfoo @ Apr 14th 2009 7:05PM
dev
Steve Ehrenberg @ Apr 14th 2009 7:07PM
I heard word that the bittorrent version wasn't working because it pretty much locked down until it verified that you were a developer. Downloading it now! Beta 2 fixed most of the major bugs with beta 1 (i.e. it was actually usable without restarting the phone 2 or 3 times a day).. I'm guessing beta 3 is going to just polish things up even more..
P.A.C Man @ Apr 14th 2009 7:07PM
Well, I'm one of the lucky few to be registered on Demonoid, so I shouldn't have to wait too long. Someone will have it up, probably late tonight.
Crap, I just released I missed House last night. Gotta download that too.
P.A.C Man @ Apr 14th 2009 7:15PM
@Steve Ehrenberg, who said: "I heard word that the bittorrent version wasn't working because it pretty much locked down until it verified that you were a developer."
Well, that's a bummer. I was waiting until this release specifically because I thought it would be very stable by now. Look like I might want to sign up as a DEV. Does it cost $100.00 to sign up or is it free?
MSM @ Apr 14th 2009 7:38PM
you know you don't have to restore your whole phone,,,
just press (option) while clicking (check for update) and select your .ipsw file
this way you don't have to take a long time and you don't have to resync everything you have on your phone,,, just a tip
Greg @ Apr 14th 2009 8:33PM
@P.A.C Man
You have to pay the $100. If you don't pay and register your phone on the Apple Developer Connection the beta won't work and you'll have a very expensive and shiny paperweight.
P.A.C Man @ Apr 14th 2009 8:43PM
Thanks for the warning. Guess I'll wait for June. Damn!
Hans Gruber FTW @ Apr 14th 2009 6:53PM
I'm not a dev, but I'm still psyched about tethering, A2DP (spelling?) and bluetooth multiplayer.
hurry up and get here june!
Steven @ Apr 14th 2009 6:58PM
Can anyone add me to their Dev account?
P.A.C Man @ Apr 14th 2009 7:03PM
Dude, it will be on Bit torrent soon enough. Just relax and wait.
Greg @ Apr 14th 2009 8:33PM
Once again: if you don't have a developer account, it will brick your phone. Don't think you're smarter than that. You're not.
Anthony @ Apr 14th 2009 11:15PM
@Greg, actually, a majority of the users here use an iPod touch, which means it doesn't brick the main functions because they aren't locked down at all by AT&T.
Always forgetting the non-phone aspect. :(
Abraham @ Apr 14th 2009 7:00PM
Link Please : )
Alex @ Apr 14th 2009 7:00PM
I hope we finally get to see video recording for the 3G. =)
Nickwould @ Apr 14th 2009 7:18PM
Not happening. That'll be for the third coming only, to entice upgrades.
macfan406 @ Apr 14th 2009 9:59PM
sorry, cant find Video record :(
Nick K. @ Apr 14th 2009 7:02PM
Does anyone know what build number this is?
savingdaylight @ Apr 14th 2009 7:03PM
we needs a torrent.
Clyde Berry @ Apr 14th 2009 7:03PM
iPhone 3.0 vs. Android 1.5... FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!
ashan @ Apr 14th 2009 7:28PM
iPhone's version is twice as high!
Charlie @ Apr 14th 2009 7:07PM
I am a Dev with apple. i'm installing it as i write this post
Kid Dynamic @ Apr 14th 2009 8:33PM
Congratulation!
Robert @ Apr 14th 2009 7:07PM
Build number: 7A280f
CraigJ @ Apr 14th 2009 7:09PM
Does anybody know if 3.0 has support for garbage collection?
VanillaSpice @ Apr 14th 2009 8:13PM
Excellent question; I am waiting for that more than any 'feature'. I tend to play more 2D than 3D games, and so I don't have to restart as often as many others, but it is still a darned nuisance.
James Loper @ Apr 14th 2009 10:28PM
its my understanding that apple is doing away with garbage collection due to the big memory and computing overhead. developers are forced to program more efficiently (not rely on garbage collection) we can have a faster operating system.
CraigJ @ Apr 14th 2009 11:17PM
Mine is the opposite. I believe that they just added it to Leopard, which is one of the reasons some software written for 10.5 won't run on 10.4...
iamsobrown94 @ Apr 14th 2009 7:09PM
although it may be on a torrent, you still need to log in with a Dev account to activate it.
a CRACKED torrent would be nice though
:)
Andrew @ Apr 14th 2009 8:20PM
I have a cracked iPhone... does that count? :(
murmermer @ Apr 14th 2009 9:40PM
@ Andrew
That sucks, next time buy a case!!
Andrew @ Apr 15th 2009 8:10AM
Yeah, yeah, I know. I just don't like most of the cases. I think I'll finally get one next time though.
Jarrett @ Apr 14th 2009 7:10PM
Do you have to have a Mac to install the beta's? I am thinking about registering just for beta access.
Charlie @ Apr 14th 2009 7:16PM
Well you kind of do because when you download the update it is in .dmg format and thats not openable on windows. i think
Andrew @ Apr 14th 2009 7:40PM
But I mean... if you really wanted access for the beta that bad, you could get access, add your UUID, then go download it from a torrent or something I suppose.
